Chapter 3

Author: Purple Bean
Yvonne's POV

I managed to push Harvey clear, but a shard of glass still pierced my lung. I was issued three consecutive critical condition notices during the surgery. Harvey wept uncontrollably outside the OR, sobbing that he wouldn't go on living if I died.

I had been feeling drowsy and was about to lose consciousness, but hearing him say that instantly snapped me out of it.

It was already 24 hours later when I was wheeled out of the OR and opened my eyes.

Harvey, who was usually meticulously clean, stood before me looking disheveled for the first time. His eyes were bloodshot and swollen, and his face was covered with stubble.

His gaze burned with intensity as he whispered in my ear, "There's absolutely nothing that can tear us apart from this moment on, Yvonne."

I used to think that because we had beaten death, nothing could ever tear us apart, but Rebecca, who entered our lives just a year ago, managed to change that.

In less than an hour, the baby I had wanted for seven years was gone. I had always been in poor health since I was a child. I consulted numerous medical specialists and carefully managed my physical condition after marriage. It was only through these efforts that I was able to conceive at the age of 28.

I was so excited that I could have jumped for joy when I found out that I was pregnant. I couldn't wait to tell Harvey the good news in person, but when I reached his office building, I saw him holding an unconscious Rebecca, his face pale with panic.

In that instant, the profound happiness I had experienced upon learning I was pregnant was instantly matched by an equal measure of despair.

Harvey was so panicked that he didn't even look at me before shoving me out of his way. If his secretary hadn't caught me in time, I would have tumbled down the steps—and lost the baby right then and there.

I nodded through my tears when the nurse checked with me one last time. I was raised in an unhappy household, so I understood the pain better than anyone else. I remembered the hysterical screaming matches and the bloodstained faces caused by physical altercations.

Those were the nightmares that haunted my childhood over and over again, so there was no way I could allow my own child to endure that kind of life.

I got ready to leave the hospital after the observation period after the procedure ended. While I was about to be discharged, I unexpectedly came across Harvey in the hallway, where he was talking to a doctor.

He furrowed his brow before walking over to confront me after spotting me. "What are you doing at the hospital, Yvonne?"

Upon seeing the OB-GYN medical records in my hand, Harvey's expression softened. He smiled, reaching out to rub my cold, aching lower abdomen. "Did you come for a prenatal checkup? How is our baby girl or baby boy doing? Is everything alright?"

Rebecca stepped out of her hospital ward, looking pale. She looked up and forced a strained smile, asking, "Is Mrs. Lupton pregnant? You should go be with her then, Mr. Lupton. I'm fine being on my own. You shouldn't let me come between you two, especially since Mrs. Lupton already dislikes me, Mr. Lupton."

Harvey instinctively pulled her into his arms and patiently reassured her. "Yvonne is just pregnant. She isn't that delicate, so don't worry about it so much, Rebecca."

He turned to me after saying that and asked, "Isn't that right, Yvonne?"

It sounded like a question, but his tone made it clear there was no room for disagreement.

I found the situation utterly ridiculous, so I ignored him completely. I turned around to leave, but someone suddenly grabbed my arm. Assuming that it was Harvey, I instinctively shook off the grip with force.

Yet, a second later, Rebecca cried out in pain. I turned to look and noticed that she had collapsed onto the floor, and Harvey was already scooping her up in his arms.

Harvey looked at me with a disappointed, calm gaze and said, "I'm really disappointed in you. When did you turn into this kind of person, Yvonne?"

He shoved right past me while holding Rebecca, causing me to lose my balance and hit the corner of a seat hard.

I instinctively protected my stomach, only to remember that I had already aborted the baby. I was overwhelmed by a combination of sharp pain and severe cramping, so I clutched my stomach and crouched down on the floor.

I looked up just in time to see Harvey's back as he rushed away carrying Rebecca. He didn't look back even once.

It was already afternoon when I regained consciousness. I took a cab home, yet when I entered the passcode for the lock, it didn't work.
