“Gerald, wait up!”

I exited the room just in time to see Gerald walk by with my stack of paperwork, still sealed in the same manila envelope.

He stopped.

"I just want to make a coffee run," I grinned. "I could use a bit more caffeine."

He raised a questioning eyebrow.

"And a break," I nodded in Connor's direction.

It wasn't exactly a lie—it just wasn't the complete truth. I really could use a break from Connor Davies. That man was insufferable.

Gerald's head slowly bobbed up and down in un

  • After Three Years: She Wakes Up   Chapter 149

Allison stood, threw down her hat and labcoat with a solid thunk, and raced towards the elevator with increasing speed. “Ally, wait! What are you doing?” I demanded, chasing after her. “What I said I’m going to do!” She shouted over her shoulder. “I’m going to chase that bitch and make her tell me EXACTLY what she and Josh have been up to!” A few of the parents we passed covered their children's tender ears as Allison raced towards the elevator, swearing, cursing the blonde woman in the Lululemon tracksuit like she was Satan himself. My best friend has always had a volatile temper–especially when it comes to protecting the people she loves. By the time I joined her in the terrifyingly unstable elevator car, her whole body was trembling with more than just repressed rage. When she turned her head to me, Allison's golden brown eyes were so wide that she looked younger, more innocent, as they vibrated with fear and a fierce protectiveness. Yes, she was mad at Josh for cheating--whe

I wanted to argue. But I knew it was pointless. It didn’t take us long to reach the intersection where on the left, there was the post office, and on the right, the Rooftop Cafe. “Before you go,” Gerald placed a hand on my shoulder. “Connor wanted me to sneak a tracker onto you somewhere, but I told him that it would be unethical.”I opened my mouth, flabbergasted. “Thank you I…” “That doesn’t mean I think his idea was wrong,” Gerald corrected quickly. “Which is why I want you to wear this.” Removing his watch, he handed it to me. It was rolex, vintage by the look of it, solidly built and beautiful. “This has a tracker built in,” he explained. “Just in case something happens where I become compromised.”I held his watch gently. It looked far too fine and expensive to have tampered with it in any way, but I guess a man like Connor Davies doesn't worry about small things like that. "I respect you, Ariana," Gerald gazed at me with fatherly concern. "Which is why I'm asking you to we

Gerald's head slowly bobbed up and down in understanding. "Okay, sure, I could use some company to the post office."Allison had wanted me to meet her alone. Maybe I can convince Gerald to back off once we're out of the building. "Hey Boss," Gerald called out as we passed Connor, "Allison is coming with me to the post office."Connor didn't even bother to look up. He was too engrossed in his janitorial work, sitting on his hands and knees, scrapping the last of the blood from the plush rug where some of it had splattered. The shining tile

Following Allison’s screams, I raced down the hall."You lying son of a bitch!" she shrieked, loud enough that there probably wasn't a person in the building that didn't hear. "Working with a client. In secret? Have you been working with Titan? You have, haven't you?"Josh didn't say anything. Didn't defend himself. He just let my best friend rage. Not that she gave him much opportunity to get a word in edgewise. "I know you developed my security system yourself. I was there when you dreamed it up three years ago. Remember? It was my idea. Mine and yours.""Allison," Josh gulped, his face red with shame. "Please, let me...""What? Explain?" My best friend swung her braids from side to side, her face pinched with anger and attitude.Didn't Josh realize how much trouble he was in? If he said one more thing to piss her off she was going to take off her earrings and pull off her shoes--street code for a teardown fight. And if she put her hair back in a scrunchy, it was all over for Josh M

"The computer misfiled the photo," Connor declared, his face tight with certainty. "Because of the social security number. "Exactly my thought as well," Titan confirmed. It's what made the most sense, I realized. Anthony Barren's file had two photos. Donovan Smith's photo has none, and a shared social security number. "Is it possible that the matching SS# was a clerical error?" Connor asked, covering all of his bases. "I thought of that," Titan nodded. "But when I had my system look up every possible number where one or two numbers were wrong, none of the people connected to those numbers were named Donnovan Smith. My theory is that he is using both a fake name and a purchased number.""And you got no hits on his image?" Connor inquired. "None at all?" "He's not in any of the national image data banks. If he's real, and that's his real face, then he hasn't gotten a passport, driver's licence, nor any security checks. I could do more with his fingerprints or blood." Titan stated cas

The large computer mounted to the wall took up most of the surface area and felt far too big for the blacked out individual moving on a simulated background of palm trees swaying in the breeze. His voice was mechanized, as if it were a computer speaking to us and not a man. Connor leaned forward, speaking into a microphone. On his computer, I saw what was being sent to the other party, a similar image only of an avatar that looked like one of those rounded stick-figures from the front of bathroom doors, his background one of tropical rainforests, like one might see in the A****n.“Is that what he sees?” I hissed quietly to Gerald, who looked up at me over a pair of blue-light glasses. “Does he know there are more of us here?”He nodded, “He can only hear what’s spoken into the microphone. And on his side, our voice sounds like that as well.” Oh. “Always?” He nodded again, this time placing a finger on his lips to indicate that we should be quiet, before placing another finger on his

Staring at the phone, I was unable to process what was happening. Why had Misha changed his password without telling me?As I stood there puzzled, the mysterious caller kept sending more messages. No.Misha would never cheat on me. He couldn’t. As I pulled into the long drive leading to his mother’s house. My heart beat faltered, my chest tight like someone had stabbed me and left my body pinned to the seat of the car. Closing my eyes, I exhaled slowly before opening the door and stepping ou

The next morning I woke up suddenly, confused and blinking, a sound from the next room startling me awake. The still-warm sheets let me know that Misha was still around. Usually he’d be gone by now, or nudging me awake to make him breakfast, but today he let me sleep in. Smiling, I thought of our n
