"What? I didn't do anything!" I basically yelled.
"Emelia! Lily's in the hospital, and you're throwing glass at her? What reason could you have to do that? Why would you try to hurt her?" Victor shouted back. His voice was cold towards me, as he held onto Lily's hand.
"So you're just going to believe her over your own wife?! Just like that? Like you actually think I'd do something so low as to hurt someone in the hospital?!" I fired back.
Instead, Victor ignored my words and drew his attention to Lily and the broken glass. I watched as he carefully collected the pieces and threw them away.
"Are you hurt anywhere? Did the glass get you?" Victor asked softly, giving her hand a light squeeze.
"No, no. I'm okay now that you're here." Lily's smile was small. "Please don't leave me alone with her again..."
Irritation crawled underneath my skin like a bug just by hearing Victor's change in tone as he spoke to Lily. I had to tune out their conversation because I genuinely thought I was starting to go crazy.
It was baffling to watch Victor's concern only extending to Lily. Not to mention he immediately took her side without hearing my side of the story.
Since when did she become his primary concern? My mind was spinning at the possibility of their 'friendship' running deeper than he led on.
"Emelia," Victor's serious tone broke me from my thoughts. "You need to apologize to Lily, now."
I shook my head. "Apologize for what? I didn't do anything!"
"Are you implying that Lily just broke the glass on purpose just to blame you?"
"Have you even considered that?"
"No, because that's ridiculous!" Victor crossed his arms. "Lily's been through enough stress with this hospital visit, and there's no reason for her to put herself in more danger by trying to hurt herself. She doesn't need any more complications given her health."
"Not to mention, that broken glass could've seriously injured her. Even a small piece can be enough to cut deep. There was no reason for you to be so careless!" He added.
I furrowed my eyebrows in frustration as heat rose in my chest. "For the last time: I didn't throw the damn glass at her! I'm shocked that you even think so low of me! And where's the concern for me if I'd gotten hurt, hm?"
What had gotten into him? Why all of a sudden was he more concerned about her well-being than mine? And why was he so adamant that I take the fall for something that I didn't even do?
Victor shifted uncomfortably at my words as he avoided my gaze.
Lily spoke up then. "Oh, Emelia, be happy you're not some fragile little thing like me. You're strong and capable—you wouldn't have been so easily hurt by measly glass. I'm sorry for causing an argument… My health really is burdensome, huh?"
Victor's discomfort instantly dissipated as he placed his hand on Lily's shoulder. "No, nonsense. You're the one in the hospital remember? None of this is your fault."
He then shifted his gaze to me as if his own audacity fueled his confidence. "Seriously, Emelia. Please just apologize so we can move past this."
I scoffed at his foolish stubbornness. "You're a piece of work, you know that, Victor? You know I always take accountability for when I've done something wrong. But I won't take the blame for something I didn't do. I thought you knew me better than that."
Before Victor could get a word in, I grabbed my purse and left Lily's room. Victor's reaction completely shocked and crushed me.
The disappointment weighed heavy on my heart as Victor chose Lily over me. For the first time in our marriage, I felt like an outsider.
I had to get out of that room. I couldn't be there anymore.
When I returned home, the weight of tonight's events started to come crashing down. I didn't even have the energy to stand as I threw myself onto the bed and laid there for the rest of the night.
Ever since Victor had that dinner with Lily, I noticed how things were now starting to shift. Our marriage had been harmonious and stable, but now…
I didn't even know what to think.
Victor protected Lily, and trusted her words over mine. It was like I was nothing but an afterthought; something to be put in a box and put in storage for a later time.
There was an aching sting in my heart at how differently Victor treated me. Was I even his wife when he was around her?
I waited and waited as the hours passed, hoping that Victor would come home so we could talk things out. At some point, I lost track of time and simply hoped for a call.
It wasn't until around midnight that Victor finally texted me.
Victor: I won't be home tonight. I'll see you in the morning.
His words were like pin needles into an already aching and hurt heart. Disappointment washed over me like a restless ocean.
I didn't want to doubt him, but what choice did he give me? How could I possibly trust him when he left me to hang dry for someone else?
When the next morning came and I was back at work, I carried the heavy weight of the past 2 days in my heart and on my shoulders. It didn't help that my place of work happened to be Victor's company.
The Majestic Monarch Jewelry Co., and its beautiful logo of a monarch butterfly wearing a crown.
It was a unique company because it wasn't a family-founded business that was passed down to Victor.
No, it was Victor's company that he started after he graduated from college. It was his pride and joy, and he took good care of everyone here.
My talent as a jewelry designer was how I met Victor, and eventually married him. Although he hired me to help grow his business, no one knew I was his wife.
I preferred it that way because I didn't want my accomplishments diminished just because I married the CEO.
As I was walking to my office, my colleague, Miranda, ran up to me with a wide smile on her face. "Congratulations! I saw the email about your work being chosen as the flagship design for the next season's concept!"
A wave of relief washed over me. This was the first good thing that's happened in the past two days. It finally meant that the promotion I dreamed of was becoming a reality!
"Thank you so much, Miranda." I smiled widely. "It's going to be exciting to spearhead this project with all of you."
"Please." A discordant voice interjected. "Don't get ahead of yourself."
It was Kelly. We never got along, even though I only treated her with kindness and respect.
"Is something the matter, Kelly?" I asked.
"Oh, nothing's the matter. I just didn't want you getting too into your own head or anything. Like, you're not actually that naïve to think you're going to be the project lead, right?"
"What are you talking about?"
"The position has already been filled and reserved by the higher-ups. Didn't you hear? I heard it might have been the CEO's doing."
Victor? Was he planning to surprise me?
At that moment, the room got still as Victor walked in. His charcoal-colored suit was impeccable, and his light hair was slicked back perfectly. Trailing close behind him was the Director—my immediate supervisor, Trevor.
As much as I wanted to admire how handsome Victor was today, all I could think about was how he chose and prioritized Lily over coming home to me. It was hard not to think about how he treated me like an afterthought.
Before I could get too deep in my feelings, Trevor approached me.
"Could you come to my office?"
I simply nodded my head and followed. As I walked in, he shut the door behind me and closed the blinds.
"So, I'm sure you've heard the news of your design being chosen as the flagship for next season's concept. Which, congratulations by the way." Trevor stated.
"Thank you." I smiled politely. "It's an honor. I can only hope that I can lead the new season's project to great success."
Trevor became stiff, and suddenly the air felt... awkward. And tense.
"Well... That's the thing." Trevor seemed to struggle with his words. "I was hoping that I was going to be able to talk to you about a promotion. After all, you do deserve it."
"But…?"
"But..." Trevor took a deep breath. "It seems that Mr. Russo has assigned the position to someone else."
"Someone else?" I couldn't take him beating around the bush any longer.
mso-pagination:widow-orphan;text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;mso-line-height-alt:12pt;">Trevor nodded tightly. "It's why I pulled you in here because I wanted to ask... Do you know who Lily Marino is?"
Victor's POVThe rest of my afternoon was spent doing menial paperwork and answering work emails. Of course, none of it was enough to truly take my mind off of the horrible meeting from this morning, but it took the edge off the madness that crept at the edges of my mind.Well, until I received a phone call from Rory."I thought I told you not to call me unless you had something useful." I answered irritably."Already so grouchy, are we?" Rory teased. "Well, you'll be pleased to know that I was able to secure flight logs of those Italian flights I was able to track down. Your precious Emelia was on the first flight that came in."I merely grunted in response."Hm, not exactly the pleased response I was looking for.""Because I already KNOW that she's here." I sighed. "I saw her, at the masquerade ball.""Oh, well I was not made aware of that. Perhaps I would've found better use of my time if you'd communicated better.""Oh, don't tell me that's the only piece of information you were ab
Emelia's POVTriumph brought a smile to my face as I watched Lily storm off. Although, a part of me wondered what it would've been like if she saw that it was actually me, but I brushed the thought away completely.Just as she disappeared into the crowd, I let out a sigh of relief as I took off my sunglasses."Miss Emelia?" I heard a voice from behind me call out. When I turned around, I was surprised to see that it was my secretary, Renee. "Hey, Renee. Did you see any of that, or…?"She handed me a matcha latte and greeted me with a smile. "I did. I was in the back when I heard all of the commotion, but I saw you were already handling it. And well, might I add.""Thanks. It's funny that we're already dealing with those kinds of people before the store even opens." I motioned for her to follow me as we made our way to the back rooms of the store."Do you mind if I ask you something?" She asked once we were out of earshot of all the other workers."Of course.""Was there a reason why yo
Lily's POVWho the hell did these people think they were? Barring me from this store like they owned the place? Lowly little security guards, thinking that their words mattered!Did they know that they were messing with Lily Russo? Wife of the most esteemed, billionaire CEO and business tycoon, Victor Russo?I had a RIGHT to be here!I came with a mission, and I had no intentions of being turned away just because "the store wasn't open yet".Pfft! As if that mattered!I need to make amends to Victor. He clearly likes this store enough to keep their business card around. Not to mention, my girls would be so jealous of me getting early entry into such a prestigious store!"Ma'am, the store isn't open yet!" A short, chubby guard put himself in between me and the entrance, blocking the lobby. "You can come back when it opens tomorrow!""No, what I'm going to do is stand RIGHT HERE, until you fetch me the owner of this place! Clearly, my reputation is lost on someone like you." I snorted."
Emelia's POV"We're so proud of you, Emelia." My mom's smile shone through the screen of our FaceTime call. "Truly, you've done a lot for yourself over these years, and look at where you're at now!"Tears welled at the base of my eyes. "T-thank you, mom. I'm just sorry that I haven't been able to come and see you and dad… Especially since I promised—"A loud, wet cough interrupted my sentence but was soon replaced by an amused chuckle. My mom turned the front-facing camera towards my dad. His somewhat pale complexion was warmed by the sunlight spilling into the hospital room. A smile bloomed across his lips when he saw me."Don't worry about your old man," my dad's gruff voice came through the speakers. "I'm still here, and fighting off whatever the hell it is I have. Besides, you're making waves, baby girl. I couldn't be any more proud of you.""You know me, always a worry wart." I laughed in between trying to keep my tears at bay."Oh, you take that up from your mother for sure.""He
Victor's POVFrustration tried to claw its way out of my chest as I sped back to the sanctuary of my office. My fingers gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white.I drove the car in complete silence, letting nothing shelter my mind from the storm of my tumultuous thoughts. The meeting was a disaster. Not only were The Collective's proposed terms and conditions near nothing what I'd envisioned a collaboration would actually be, I was more angry with the fact that it wasn't even Emelia who came. That was probably the worst part of it all.I hated how high my expectations were when I should've known better. It's not like I was given a reason to hold her to such estimations.Yet, my heart still raced with the possibility… the hope.Once I made it back to my headquarters and sulked my way up the steps and past the workspace, I b-lined for my office without saying a word to anyone. Silence slowly descended upon the space as I walked by, each step weighted with disap
Emelia's POVMost of my morning was spent catching up on more emails, filling out paperwork, and finalizing the details for The Collective's grand opening tomorrow. Tomorrow…My heart swelled at the thought of seeing the fruits of my hard work culminating into the physical manifestation of my storefront.I had dreams about this. And of course, along the way, I had my doubts. But despite that, I persevered.I became stronger.I became more determined.I never gave up.And now I got to reap the rewards of all my efforts, and to truly bask in the love and passion I poured into this industry that had already given so much to me.The fashion and design industry would always be my home, and I was glad that I was able to mark my place in its world.Excitement buzzed beneath my skin as a smile blossomed across my lips."A penny for your thoughts?" Alexis smiled as her eyes glanced up from her laptop at me. "Although, I can probably already guess what's got you so giddy!""I just can't believe
