Stephanie Steward walks toward him, undressing as she moves. By the time she’s in front of him, she's naked.

"If you don't want this, I understand." She pauses. "But know that it's the boss's way of helping you out."

Maxwell doesn't respond.

She pulls him gently forward and pushes the door shut. Her hands slip around his neck, and she kisses him, slow at first.

He doesn't react.

Then his hands find her waist, and he kisses her back.

*******

Maxwell gets home around three in the morning. As he m

SELENEMy breath catches, and our eyes meet. Neither of us looks away, and the room suddenly feels smaller.I am the first to break eye contact. "When we get home, we'll discuss this.""Why not now?""Because you're in a hospital."He smirks. "I'm still capable of having a conversation."I look at him. "And because you need to recover."He gives me a knowing look. "Or because you're thinking about running to the Tucker twins again?"My eyes snap back to his. "What?""You heard me.""Are you seriously doing this now?""I'm just asking.""No, you're provoking me.""Perhaps." He shrugs.I stare at him. "It seems you lack the emotions to understand how I truly feel."His expression becomes serious. "Don't mistake restraint for ignorance."I say nothing and just stare at him."I know exactly what love is," he continues. "And I know exactly what it isn't." His voice is quiet now. "Just because I chose to make sacrifices for it doesn't mean I never felt it."I study him. There is no arroganc

SELENEIt has been a week.A full week since Victor collapsed on the jet and nearly died before we could get him to Niveria. He is alive, and out of danger. And, according to the doctors, he is extremely lucky. But Victor doesn't seem impressed by any of that. He is more interested in Durrell."He's fine," I tell him for what must be the tenth time.Victor looks at me from the hospital bed. "You don't know that.""Neither do you." I remind him.His jaw tightens. "The Kravens have him, and you say that like it's reassuring.""It actually is." He gives me a look, and I sigh. "Beatrice said they won't harm their own blood.""Beatrice also said a lot of things." "Then trust the part that matters." He looks away. "The Kraven death sentence on me isn't a joke."I study him. "No. It definitely isn't."His eyes return to mine. "Then you understand why I can't sit here doing nothing.""You almost died.""I know.""Twice. Your heart stopped twice." I fold my arms. "And you're still more worr

DURRELLThe man across the table finally signs something, and Matrov's shoulders ease half an inch, small enough that I'd have missed it three weeks ago. I don't miss it now."He folded," I say quietly."He folded an hour ago," Tanis says. "The signature is just paperwork."I file that away. Everything here works like that, the real decision happens somewhere underneath the words, and the words just catch up eventually.Three weeks, and I can hold a conversation together if people speak slowly and don't mind repeating themselves. I can greet a room the way I'm meant to, correctly enough now that people have stopped visibly flinching when I try. I know my numbers. I know enough grammar to ask a question without insulting someone by accident, which apparently used to happen constantly during my first week, according to Tanis, who finds it funnier in hindsight than I do.I am nowhere near fluent. Full-speed conversation between two Kravens still moves past me like weather. But I underst

DURRELLI don't know how long I stayed awake after that. An hour, maybe two. Eventually someone brought food I didn't touch, and left when I made it clear I had no idea what she'd said to me.Nobody spoke English unless it was the man from the window, and even he rationed it like it cost him something. Nobody explained anything. Every time I asked about Ariana, I got the same blank patience, the kind that isn't cruelty, just a wall with better manners.Eventually I stopped asking. Not because I'd stopped wanting to know, but because I understood they weren't going to tell me, and asking had started to feel like handing them something.I learned his name was Tanis. I didn't get much else out of him that first week, except one thing that mattered more than anything he could have told me about Ariana."What happens if I leave?" I asked him, once I was steady enough to stand at the window instead of the bed.He didn't turn around. "Nothing.""Nothing?""You will not leave.""That's not w

DURRELLThe room smells like leather and something faintly metallic, and I understand maybe one word in five of what's being said around this table.Matrov sits at the head of it, speaking in Veyr to a man I don't recognize, something about a shipment and a signature and a name that gets repeated with weight each time. Tanis leans slightly toward me. "He's asking whether the Feros family will sign," he murmurs in English. "Watch his hands, not his mouth."I watch the man's hands. They're still. "He's lying," I say.Tanis doesn't look at me, but something in his jaw shifts. Approval, maybe. It's the closest thing to it he ever shows. This is my fifth meeting in three weeks. I understand fragments of the language now, enough to follow the shape of a conversation if it moves slowly, enough to catch my name inside a sentence I otherwise can't follow. They call me Leontes, Kraven, never Durrell, not here. And it has been three weeks already, but it feels like three lifetimes.***The day

VICTORThe first thing I hear is the steady beeping of a machine. The second thing I feel is pain, everywhere, in my chest, my arms, and my throat. Even breathing feels like work.I open my eyes and light floods my vision, for several seconds, I can't make sense of anything. I try to move, but my body refuses. Then I notice her. Selene is sitting beside the bed, her head resting against the mattress, both hands wrapped around one of mine as she sleeps. For a moment I simply stare at her. Her hair is slightly disheveled, with shadows under her eyes, and she looks exhausted. How long has she been sitting there? I don't know. I try to remember. The jet, Beatrice, the street, the boy, the pain, and Selene's voice. Then nothing. My heart beats harder, not from fear, but from something else. Then that warmth returns, the same one from the jet, only stronger now. Much stronger.I know this feeling, I've known it before. Many years ago, before responsibility became more important than desire.
