Chapter 2

Author: Patient Cat
I was in a foreign country where I could not speak the language, and I did not have a cent to my name.

By the time I walked back to the hotel, it was already 3:00 am, and the staff stopped me in the lobby simply because I could not prove I was a guest.

Every call I made went to the same automated voice telling me the number was unavailable. Exhausted, I said, "I really am staying in Room 1809. You can call up to the room and ask."

The clerk eyed me with suspicion, dialed Room 1809, and put it on speaker.

"Hello, Ms. Bellamy. There's a gentleman in the lobby who says he's your husband."

Cyrus' cold, hoarse voice came through the line. "Husband?"

Then he raised his voice. "Adele, how many husbands do you have? The front desk is calling again because someone down there says he's your husband."

Adele took the phone and spoke flatly. "My husband has been with me the whole time. Don't put calls like this through again."

I lunged for the phone in a panic, but all I heard was the cold, unforgiving dial tone.

The clerk looked thoroughly annoyed. "Sir, you just made me offend a very important guest. Please stop interfering with our work."

They practically threw me out of the hotel.

I stood at the curb, utterly humiliated, and looked down at my feet, which were rubbed raw with bloody blisters. The pain left me too weak to keep standing, so I slowly sat down. I stayed there beside the hotel for the entire night.

Early the next morning, a kind stranger gave me a ride to the airport. At check-in, however, the agent told me, "Mr. Kenneth Linwood, your ticket from Arvenia to Marlow Bay has already been refunded. Weren't you notified?"

My head rang as if something had exploded beside my ears. Then I spotted two familiar figures not far away and rushed over. "Adele! Why did you cancel my ticket? Don't you know my visa is about to expire? If I stay any longer—"

Before I could finish, Cyrus swung his hand and struck me hard across the face.

There was a sharp crack, and the ringing in my ears blended with Cyrus' icy voice.

"Kenneth, as the homewrecker, you should know your place. What right do you have to travel with me, let alone take the same flight?"

Even Matilda screamed at the top of her lungs. "You nasty homewrecker! You're not allowed on our plane!"

Everyone around turned to stare at me. Before long, a crowd had gathered in the huge terminal to watch the spectacle.

I clenched my fists, my face ashen, yet I forced out each word. "Cyrus, I'm the one with the marriage certificate. You're the real—"

Before I could get the last word out, Adele stepped in front of me and blocked my view. She stood between Cyrus and me, staring at me coldly, her eyes full of warning.

"I've already rebooked your flight for tomorrow. Kenneth, don't push your luck. It's only one day later than planned. You should know what matters more here."

Every breath felt laced with fine needles that stung me all over.

I understood what Adele meant. If I refused tomorrow's ticket, there was no telling how much longer I would be stuck here.

I had no choice.

I squeezed my eyes shut and let out a heavy, humiliated breath. "Fine. I get it."

Adele shielded Cyrus with one arm and held Matilda with the other. Their calm, self-assured figures soon disappeared from view. Adele never once paused, and she did not even look back.

My new flight was at 8:00 am the next day.

After a grueling night at the airport, I took my passport to clear immigration, only for an officer to stop me.

"Sir, your visa expired yesterday. Please come with us and explain why you've remained in our country."

They locked me in a small, windowless holding room. It was dark and cold, with no bed, so I had to sleep on the freezing floor. There was no food either. My stomach twisted with hunger and my face went pale, yet no one cared.

I was held for three days and three nights. During that time, the officers kept trying to contact my family, but Cyrus was the one who answered every time.

From start to finish, he only ever said one thing—"I don't know him."

On the fourth day, when they finally let me out, I had lost nearly eight pounds. Sallow and gaunt, I made it home on sheer willpower.

When I reached the front door of our house, however, the security system no longer recognized my face. Red warning text flashed across the screen.

[Facial recognition failed. Intruder detected!]

All the grievance and rage of the past few days finally erupted. Like a madman, I pounded and kicked the door with everything I had, until it swung open with a bang.

Adele appeared in front of me, her expression thunderous. "Kenneth! Have you lost your mind? Cyrus hasn't slept properly in days, and he only just fell asleep. Do you realize you almost woke him? Move out of the house for a while. I don't want you coming back and upsetting him again."

I could not help letting out a self-mocking laugh. Cyrus had simply lost a little sleep, and she was already this anxious. Had she ever stopped to think that I had been stranded alone in a foreign country for almost four days and had nearly failed to make it back?

I looked at her wearily and handed her the divorce agreement I had printed the moment I got back.

"If you want me to move out, fine. Sign the divorce agreement first."

It was only after I checked the security footage outside my door that I learned what had happened. The night before, Adele had taken a sudden phone call. She left Matilda at my front door, told her a few things, and then went out.Matilda kept knocking, but I was sleeping so soundly that I never heard her. She eventually wandered off to look for her mom. She searched all night without finding her, until the police spotted her and brought her back.I frowned and was about to ask Matilda for more details about the night before when my phone suddenly rang. The caller ID showed Cyrus' name. When I answered, his voice was cold, with an undercurrent of something unhinged. "I have Adele. I want a billion dollars in cash and safe passage out of the country. Once I've made it out, I'll tell you exactly where she is."I immediately put the call on speaker so the officers could hear."Mr. Wakefield." I let out a self-mocking laugh. "Are you sure you called the right person? I walked away fr

I closed the shop early that day and went home, because I did not want anything more to do with Adele. She had not managed to spoil my mood. On the way back, I even stopped by the supermarket and picked up a few houseplants.I thought that after hearing me speak so bluntly, Adele would disappear from my world for good. I never expected that the moment I walked into my apartment building, Doreen would shoot me a knowing look. "Ken, why didn't you ever tell us your wife was this gorgeous?"I saw the figure leaning against my door and sighed. Then I corrected Doreen, "Ex-wife."At the sound of my voice, Adele and Matilda both turned to look at me."I thought I made myself perfectly clear," I said flatly.Adele furrowed her brow. Her eyes were dark and intense as they fixed on me, as if she had a thousand things to say.Matilda was the first to come toward me. She gathered all her courage and tugged at the hem of my shirt. "Daddy, I'm sorry."She said it very earnestly, and I belie

The punks who had been about to beat me up froze on the spot, sticks still raised, and exchanged glances. Bits of their whispered chatter kept drifting into my ears."He really has a wife and kid?""Look at his wife, though. She's gorgeous. She's got that whole mature woman thing going on.""You're into that type? Then quit fighting me over Estelle.""Doesn't his wife look loaded? Why would he be selling coffee here? Maybe he's not even her husband. Maybe he's her side piece."My whole body went rigid, and I instinctively looked over at them. Before I could get a word out, however, Adele stepped in front of me. With a blank expression, she twisted the watch on her wrist and spoke slowly and deliberately."Kenneth Linwood is my lawful husband, and we have the marriage certificate to prove it. Watch your mouths."Staring at Adele's back, I could not help feeling dazed. If she had said those words just a few months ago, I would have been moved beyond belief. I would have dropped

Kenneth's POV:What Adele did not know was that I would never go back. That day, I planned to leave Marlow Bay right away. Then I got a call from a neighbor back in my hometown. He told me the area was being redeveloped and asked whether I wanted to sell my family's old house and make some money off it.I agreed almost without hesitation and went back home to sign the sale contract.A moment before, I had been so broke that I could barely afford a single plane ticket. Now I suddenly had the means to start over in another city. After weighing my options, I chose Vellmoor, a city I had never set foot in and had only ever seen in ads, famous for its maze of hills and winding stairways. To keep Adele from finding me, I did not fly. I took an unlicensed cab across the border, then switched between ferries, buses, and every other kind of transportation, sightseeing along the way. Ten days later, I finally arrived in Vellmoor. It was already October, yet Vellmoor was so hot that I brok

An hour later, Adele received Cyrus' latest psychiatric evaluation. The report showed no sign of depression or schizophrenia. He was healthier than she was.Adele's eyes instantly went red. She ripped the evaluation in half, crumpled it, and hurled it into the trash, then shot to her feet. "Keep digging. Find out what else Cyrus has been hiding from me. I want every last detail of the truth!"Once the shout had died away, Adele clenched her fists and forced the question out, her voice almost helpless. "Any news on Kenneth?"Harriet shook her head slightly. "Mr. Linwood probably didn't leave by plane. I've checked every flight, and there's no record of him. We're looking into ferries and other options now."Adele pressed her fingers to her brow in frustration, her gaze dark. "I don't care how you do it. You have to find him."She would not let the divorce end like this, with nothing settled. Even if they really did split up, the two of them would have to sit down face-to-face and

Inside the cardboard box was a diary.Kenneth's name was written on the first page, in the still-childish handwriting of a 15-year-old.Besides the diary, the box held a few things that looked familiar to Adele, though she could not say why.Adele turned to the first page. For the first time in all these years, she truly stepped into Kenneth's life, a life that had revolved entirely around her.[The moment I first saw Adele Bellamy, I knew I was done for. She wore a white dress and gave the freshman welcome speech onstage. Her expression was completely flat, yet she turned my whole world upside down.[I tried to get to know her, but we lived in completely different worlds. She would glance at me a few times and then forget me the moment she turned away. All I could do was hand her a few extra bottles of water whenever she gave a speech, but plenty of people were doing the same thing. She only ever drank the water Cyrus Wakefield handed her.[Everyone says I stood up at that weddi
