Chapter 3

Author: Patient Cat
A heavy silence settled between us.

Adele stared at the divorce agreement in disbelief.

I was so nervous I could barely breathe. Just as I was wondering whether I should say something more, Adele suddenly let out a snort of laughter.

She took the agreement without hesitation and signed her name.

"Kenneth, did you really think you could threaten me with some divorce agreement you printed off on a whim? Let me make this clear. Moving out isn't up for discussion. Whether I sign this or not, you're leaving."

I took back the signed agreement, and even my voice sounded lighter. "Fine. I'll move out."

Adele's expression stiffened, and a flash of irritation surged into her eyes. She pressed her fingers to her temples several times, as though she wanted to say something more.

Cyrus' voice suddenly rang out behind her. "Adele, where are you?"

She immediately turned and called back, "I came down for some water. I'll be right up!"

She hurried off so quickly that one of her slippers fell off along the way, as if she were terrified Cyrus would not be able to find her.

Only when she reached the landing did she seem to remember something. She turned to look at me standing outside the door and spoke slowly, stressing every word. "Kenneth, I suggest you stop making a scene. Do you really think you can survive without me?"

Compared to the Bellamys, the richest family in Marlow Bay, I truly amounted to nothing. Ever since I married her, I had lived off the Bellamy family's money like a kept man, so it was no surprise she would ask me that.

Even so, her contempt made my chest seize painfully.

I lowered my eyes without a word and gently pulled the door shut, shutting out the strange look in her eyes.

Over the next few days, I hired a lawyer to handle the divorce. When I learned that I only had to get through a 30-day waiting period before the divorce was finalized, my whole body finally relaxed.

After that, I rented a single room in a run-down neighborhood on the edge of the city. It was nothing special, but it was livable.

I sent my résumé to more than a dozen companies, but since I had no work experience, I never received a single interview offer.

With my savings nearly gone, I signed up as a food delivery driver. The work was exhausting but fulfilling, so fulfilling that I barely had time to think about Adele. That was why, when I saw her again, it felt like a lifetime had passed.

"Kenneth?" Adele's eyes turned cold. "What are you doing here?"

Cyrus stepped out from behind her, wrapped in a towel with his hair a mess, his face dark with anger. "Are you following us?"

Adele frowned, contempt and mockery flickering in her eyes. "Kenneth, weren't you the one who wanted me to sign that agreement? What, now that it's signed, you're following me around to keep tabs on me?"

Cyrus was so furious that his eyes turned red, and he swung at me again. "First, you wormed your way into the house Adele and I share, and now, you followed us to a hotel? Kenneth, do you have no shame? Are you really that disgusting?"

This time, I neither dodged nor backed down. I raised my hand and caught Cyrus by the arm, stopping his fist midair. "You're overthinking this, Mr. Wakefield. I'm here to deliver your order."

I pulled a box of condoms out of the delivery bag and threw it straight at Adele. "You're quite adventurous, aren't you, Ms. Bellamy?"

My eyes were full of mockery as I buried the ache in my chest. "What, is the house not enough for you anymore? You had to get a hotel room too?"

Adele paused for a beat and frowned. "You—"

I stepped back and cut her off before she could finish. "Your order has been delivered. If you're satisfied, please leave a five-star rating."

I slammed the door behind me and walked away without a second glance.

I never expected that the moment I got downstairs, Adele's bodyguards would pin me down.

"What are you doing?" I struggled, but one of them clamped a hand over my mouth. They practically dragged me into the elevator and threw me back into the room I had just left.

A used condom, still sticky, hit me square in the face. The rank smell made my stomach heave, and I nearly threw up.

Adele gritted her teeth. "Kenneth, you've got some nerve. If you want to act like you don't care, at least make it convincing. How dare you put glue inside the condoms? If I hadn't caught it in time, you could have killed Cyrus. Do you even realize that?"

It was only after I checked the security footage outside my door that I learned what had happened. The night before, Adele had taken a sudden phone call. She left Matilda at my front door, told her a few things, and then went out.Matilda kept knocking, but I was sleeping so soundly that I never heard her. She eventually wandered off to look for her mom. She searched all night without finding her, until the police spotted her and brought her back.I frowned and was about to ask Matilda for more details about the night before when my phone suddenly rang. The caller ID showed Cyrus' name. When I answered, his voice was cold, with an undercurrent of something unhinged. "I have Adele. I want a billion dollars in cash and safe passage out of the country. Once I've made it out, I'll tell you exactly where she is."I immediately put the call on speaker so the officers could hear."Mr. Wakefield." I let out a self-mocking laugh. "Are you sure you called the right person? I walked away fr

I closed the shop early that day and went home, because I did not want anything more to do with Adele. She had not managed to spoil my mood. On the way back, I even stopped by the supermarket and picked up a few houseplants.I thought that after hearing me speak so bluntly, Adele would disappear from my world for good. I never expected that the moment I walked into my apartment building, Doreen would shoot me a knowing look. "Ken, why didn't you ever tell us your wife was this gorgeous?"I saw the figure leaning against my door and sighed. Then I corrected Doreen, "Ex-wife."At the sound of my voice, Adele and Matilda both turned to look at me."I thought I made myself perfectly clear," I said flatly.Adele furrowed her brow. Her eyes were dark and intense as they fixed on me, as if she had a thousand things to say.Matilda was the first to come toward me. She gathered all her courage and tugged at the hem of my shirt. "Daddy, I'm sorry."She said it very earnestly, and I belie

The punks who had been about to beat me up froze on the spot, sticks still raised, and exchanged glances. Bits of their whispered chatter kept drifting into my ears."He really has a wife and kid?""Look at his wife, though. She's gorgeous. She's got that whole mature woman thing going on.""You're into that type? Then quit fighting me over Estelle.""Doesn't his wife look loaded? Why would he be selling coffee here? Maybe he's not even her husband. Maybe he's her side piece."My whole body went rigid, and I instinctively looked over at them. Before I could get a word out, however, Adele stepped in front of me. With a blank expression, she twisted the watch on her wrist and spoke slowly and deliberately."Kenneth Linwood is my lawful husband, and we have the marriage certificate to prove it. Watch your mouths."Staring at Adele's back, I could not help feeling dazed. If she had said those words just a few months ago, I would have been moved beyond belief. I would have dropped

Kenneth's POV:What Adele did not know was that I would never go back. That day, I planned to leave Marlow Bay right away. Then I got a call from a neighbor back in my hometown. He told me the area was being redeveloped and asked whether I wanted to sell my family's old house and make some money off it.I agreed almost without hesitation and went back home to sign the sale contract.A moment before, I had been so broke that I could barely afford a single plane ticket. Now I suddenly had the means to start over in another city. After weighing my options, I chose Vellmoor, a city I had never set foot in and had only ever seen in ads, famous for its maze of hills and winding stairways. To keep Adele from finding me, I did not fly. I took an unlicensed cab across the border, then switched between ferries, buses, and every other kind of transportation, sightseeing along the way. Ten days later, I finally arrived in Vellmoor. It was already October, yet Vellmoor was so hot that I brok

An hour later, Adele received Cyrus' latest psychiatric evaluation. The report showed no sign of depression or schizophrenia. He was healthier than she was.Adele's eyes instantly went red. She ripped the evaluation in half, crumpled it, and hurled it into the trash, then shot to her feet. "Keep digging. Find out what else Cyrus has been hiding from me. I want every last detail of the truth!"Once the shout had died away, Adele clenched her fists and forced the question out, her voice almost helpless. "Any news on Kenneth?"Harriet shook her head slightly. "Mr. Linwood probably didn't leave by plane. I've checked every flight, and there's no record of him. We're looking into ferries and other options now."Adele pressed her fingers to her brow in frustration, her gaze dark. "I don't care how you do it. You have to find him."She would not let the divorce end like this, with nothing settled. Even if they really did split up, the two of them would have to sit down face-to-face and

Inside the cardboard box was a diary.Kenneth's name was written on the first page, in the still-childish handwriting of a 15-year-old.Besides the diary, the box held a few things that looked familiar to Adele, though she could not say why.Adele turned to the first page. For the first time in all these years, she truly stepped into Kenneth's life, a life that had revolved entirely around her.[The moment I first saw Adele Bellamy, I knew I was done for. She wore a white dress and gave the freshman welcome speech onstage. Her expression was completely flat, yet she turned my whole world upside down.[I tried to get to know her, but we lived in completely different worlds. She would glance at me a few times and then forget me the moment she turned away. All I could do was hand her a few extra bottles of water whenever she gave a speech, but plenty of people were doing the same thing. She only ever drank the water Cyrus Wakefield handed her.[Everyone says I stood up at that weddi
