When the kiss cam swept across the stands at the baseball stadium Warren Doyle, a married investor in the league, had his arms around his PR director and was kissing her. The two of them went up on the jumbotron, and the crowd erupted in hoots and cheers. Warren stormed into the camera bay and demanded I hand over my camera. I told him the camera pointed wherever the control room told it to. He stared at me for a few seconds, then suddenly let go and let me leave. I thought that was the end of it. The next day, audio from the crew channel shot to the top of the news feeds, with nothing left in it but two ambiguous lines from me. "Camera locked on row seven. Keep rolling. Don't cut." Overnight I became the shameless camera operator who'd filmed them on purpose. I was suspended from my job, my father's food cart was trashed, and Warren sued me for a million dollars. But he didn't know that the recording he was using to convict me could only ever convict him.

Chapter 1

When Warren burst into the camera bay, I still had my headset on. He grabbed my staff badge and ordered me to delete the footage.

The PR director Renee Quinn followed behind him, her lipstick already smeared.

She blocked the crowd's phones and held out a cashier's check. "Sixty thousand dollars. Hand over the footage, and forget everything you saw tonight."

"The live feed already went out. Someone told me over the radio to turn to row seven. I just shoot what I'm told."

He didn't argue with me. He glanced down at the name on my badge and tapped it twice, hard. "Zoe Cassidy. I'll remember you. I hope you're still this tough tomorrow."

With that, Warren turned and left with Renee.

The moment I arrived at the stadium the next day, the event organizers stopped me and took me to an office.

"Zoe, I need an explanation." Gerald Marsh, the event manager, swiped through his phone a few times, held it out to me, and hit play. What came out was my voice. "Camera locked on row seven. Keep rolling. Don't cut."

"That recording's been edited." My voice was calm.

Marsh's voice rose, edged with menace. "You don't need to explain whether it was edited. Just answer me. Is that your voice? Is Camera 7 yours? Were you filming Mr. Doyle the whole time?"

I nodded. "The voice is mine, and I was operating Camera 7. But only because I was given an order."

"Whose order?" Marsh pressed.

I looked at Simon Fowler by the door. He was the head of the stadium camera crew that night. He'd been the one who told me three times not to cut away.

Marsh followed my gaze. Before he could speak, Simon denied it first. "I only told her to get the kiss cam ready. Chasing Mr. Doyle for clout was her own decision."

"Enough!" Marsh snapped his laptop shut. "Mr. Doyle has already filed a lawsuit against us. Until it's resolved, I don't think you should keep working here."

I asked to pull the security footage. Marsh refused, claiming it was only released to police and courts, then announced on the spot that I was suspended and had to turn in my work credentials and files.

After I handed everything over, they hustled me out of the stadium before I could even pack up. Outside, my father was stocking his food cart.

When Dad saw me come out, he handed me a coffee. "Off early today?"

"I've been suspended," I said flatly.

Before Dad could ask anything, the venue operations director Daniel arrived with security guards. "We've been notified. Your vending license has been revoked."

The guards moved in to seal the cart. Dad grabbed the door. "We still owe over thirty grand on this cart, and the freezer's full of stock the stadium ordered! Even if you're pulling our license, we deserve a real explanation!"

"This comes from the top. A street vendor like you is going to question the boss?" The guard kicked the cart over. "We tried asking nicely. Don't blame me for getting rough!"

Dad and I tried to step in, but the other guards who came running grabbed us both, and we could only watch as they kicked the cart to pieces.

The commotion drew a crowd. Someone recognized me and shoved a phone in my face. "How much did you sell that video for?"

Dad wrenched free of the guards and stepped in front of me. "She was following the control room's directions! What gives you the right to decide she filmed it on purpose!"

"Still making excuses? The news and the recording are both out. She's the one who said keep rolling." The man was getting more and more worked up. "If even one of the league's investors can't avoid being filmed, what chance do ordinary people have of keeping their privacy! People who make money spying on others should be locked up!"

He ranted for a long time. I didn't say a word.

Public opinion was completely against me. At a moment like this, no one would believe anything I said.

Only when Warren's lawsuit went to trial and the truth came out through the courts would my name truly be cleared.

That afternoon, the letter from Warren's lawyers arrived.

Malicious filming and distribution of private material, damage to personal reputation. Damages sought: one million dollars.

And in the so-called evidence attached: the edited recording, the kiss video with millions of views, and Simon's testimony.

Simon claimed no one had told me to shoot row seven, that I'd chased the shot on my own after spotting Warren and Renee getting cozy.

Warren then released a statement saying he'd merely been steadying a colleague who felt unwell, that the so-called kiss was just a trick of the angle, and that he would hold a press conference to address recent events.

I turned off my phone. I was about to head to my room when I saw Dad crouched beside the chest freezer, punching numbers into a calculator over and over, tallying up what he'd lost in ingredients and damage to the cart.

Watching his hunched figure, I returned to my room and took out the pinhole camera I'd secretly clipped inside my collar during the shoot.

Six years ago, when I first started, I'd never worked a live event and couldn't follow the jargon, so I'd clumsily recorded everything and replayed it over and over after the game.

The habit stuck. I never imagined this little thing would come in so handy.

Because the deleted recording of those commands was still inside it, intact.
