Chapter 1

Author: Jojo
I had spent my whole life living in the shadow of my sister, Juliana, the woman everyone in the mafia's heir circle adored and protected.

She had no idea that I had been reborn.

Just like in my previous life, she smiled sweetly and gently, insisting that I pick my fiancé first, pretending to be thoughtful and gracious.

However, this time, I refused.

In my previous life, I naïvely believed she meant well. I married the man she recommended, Chester Kane, an heir who was said to have been paralyzed after an ambush.

I gave up my right to inherit the family, becoming his caretaker, his crutch, the medicine he used to fight loneliness. However, no matter how much warmth I gave him, his heart remained frozen.

The truth only came out during my sister's pregnancy celebration. When an assassin from a rival family raised his gun toward her belly, the man who had not stood in years suddenly rose to his feet. He shoved me toward the muzzle of the gun. All seven bullets tore into my womb.

As I collapsed, I saw him pull my sister into his arms, shielding her with his own body and taking the final shot for her.

Only then did I understand.

He had never been paralyzed. His family had never abandoned him.

He pretended to be sick because Juliana's heart belonged to another man, and he refused to be tied to me.

"I'm sorry, Tania," he said. "I lied to you. However, I couldn't let Juliana lose the heir she's carrying. I'll repay what I owe you in our next life."

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day my father asked us to choose our marriage partners.

This time, I chose no one. Yet back then, they were the ones who begged for my love.

...

"Go ahead, sis, you pick first. You're the delicate one, and you need a strong family to have your back."

Juliana Larson forced a sweet tone, playing the caring sister just like she did in her previous life.

However, her eyes betrayed her, locking onto Seth Rogers–the Rogers family heir–with an affection she could not hide.

The word in the Mafia circles was that she and Seth had been secretly tangled up for ages.

Dad would definitely keep Seth for her.

In my previous life, to keep her happy, I picked Chester Kane, even though he was wheelchair-bound.

I thought I was being the bigger person, but I walked straight into a living hell.

I could still feel those last moments from my previous life.

Seven bullets ripped through me, and I had hit the ground, clutching my belly.

Chester's medics stormed in but did not even glance my way.

They all flocked to Juliana, who was barely scratched.

Huddled in Chester's embrace, she quivered. "Chester, it hurts... It's my fault, I shouldn't have ditched the guards just to spite Tania..."

The family elders could not stop singing her praises, the 'sweetest girl' who, even hurt, did not blame her sister.

She soaked up all the attention, while I lay dying on the cold floor.

It was not until I almost bled out that she suddenly 'remembered' me and yelled for the doctors.

"Save my sister! What are you waiting for? Go!"

Her tears sparkled like diamonds in the light.

That was when I saw through her act.

That was why I laughed when Dad asked me who I wanted.

"Since Juliana is so thoughtful, I won't hold back.

"I'll take Seth."

"What?" Juliana's smile disappeared as her eyes welled up with tears. "Tania, you're well aware of my relationship with Seth..."

Chester's head snapped up, his eyes widening in shock.

Then, my father's hand struck my face with a force that echoed through the room.

"Look at yourself! Seth is the heir to the Rogers family. Do you really think someone like you, an illegitimate daughter, could marry him?

"You know he's fond of your sister, yet you choose him on purpose. Are you trying to drive your sister to her grave?"

Blood trickled from the corner of my mouth, yet I could not help but smile.

"Father, if you've already decided, why pretend I have a say? Are you worried about being called unfair?"

Juliana's lashes quivered as her tears fell in a perfectly timed cascade.

"Tania, don't say that. Father loves you too. How can you accuse him so unjustly?"

Amid our quarrel, Chester, confined to his wheelchair, suddenly braced himself on the armrest and stood up.

"Don Larson, I propose a business transaction.

"I'm aware that your arms dealings have hit a rough patch. I'm willing to invest 5 million dollars to assist you, with one condition: you give me your eldest daughter, Juliana's hand in marriage."

I glared at Chester, my heart ablaze with disbelief.

I never imagined that he, who had pretended to be paralyzed for so long, would choose that moment to stand.

He caught my stare, a flicker of remorse in his eyes, before he looked away.

My heart skipped a beat.

He, too, had been reborn.

So even though he had watched me die with my womb torn apart in our previous life, he still would not allow Juliana to belong to anyone else in this one.

He was willing to play his strongest card for it.

The moment my father heard the offer of money, his rage vanished, replaced by a gleam of greed in his eyes.

He had set his sights on marrying off his daughters to strengthen the family ties, there was no way he would pass up such a golden opportunity.

Besides, the Kanes were a force to be reckoned with, far outstripping the Rogers. It was a stroke of luck that they were interested in Juliana.

"Fine," Dad said, not missing a beat, "if Chester's head over heels for Juliana, then Tania, you'll marry Seth."

Seth shot to his feet.

He sneered with disgust. "You think I'd marry you, Tania? Come on, look in the mirror! You don't hold a candle to Juliana! Don't make a fool of yourself."

They're the precious treasures I vow to guard for a lifetime."I released Juliana's ashes into the international waters, and those who once conspired against you are now facing their demons in hell."His voice chilled for a moment, then softened, "Starting today, I'll be by your side forever, your unwavering support."Eric got down on one knee, presenting the expensive diamond ring he had custom-made."Tania, I love you. On my birthday, the financial headlines blared with the news of Larson Group's utter ruin.Eric surprised me with 999 roses, renewing his declaration of love. I said yes, wrapped in the sweetness of the moment. However, then, the jarring ring of my phone cut through the air. The caller ID flashed the name of the defense attorney for Larson Group's remnants.I picked up the phone without much thought, figuring it was Chester trying to battle me for the last three New Cordova ports owned by Larson Group. Those smuggling routes were enough to make any crime family jealous."Ms. Larson, this isn't about a fight," the lawyer said carefully, "Mr. Kane wants you to know he's giving up all claims to the Larson inheritance, including the lifetime use of those ports. He's handing them over to you, no strings attached."I paused, my finger lingering on the table. "What's the catch?""Just one meeting, even if it's only a minute."We agreed to meet at the old restaurant we used to love. Ch

I watched the whole drama unfold on the casino's backstage monitors.Remembering the wild desperation in Chester's eyes, I failed to fight back a laugh. The moment he laid eyes on "Tania's" lifeless body, he was bound to lose it even more.Of course, what was the point of love that came too late? I mused."Seen enough?" Eric Hoffman locked eyes with me. "You shouldn't waste your gaze on garbage."In the depths of his eyes, I saw only my reflection. "Just observing the last pathetic flailing of a desperate fool. It won't be long before Larson Group's cash flow dries up, all thanks to you snagging those secret accounts from the international bank."Eric's laugh was a low rumble. "You promised me a shot at winning your heart. Consider this my down payment."Heat crept up my ears as I instinctively stepped back, only to be pulled into his steady embrace."Are you pleased with my gesture of devotion?"I nodded, letting myself lean into the comfort of his arms.He ruled San Henrico

In a fit of rage, Chester hurled his phone at Juliana's feet, the screen shattering on impact. The transaction records, however, were clear in Juliana's eyes: the payoffs she had sent to the gamblers.Juliana's face went ghostly white, rooted to the spot in terror."Couldn't you see your sister's life was at stake?" Chester's fury was on the verge of eclipsing his sanity, his eyes piercing Juliana with a chilling ferocity.Juliana burst into tears, her sobs heavy as they splashed onto his hand."It's not like that..."Seth's brow furrowed as he wrapped Juliana in a protective hug. "Chester, back off! Why are you attacking Juliana? She's done nothing wrong!"Chester scoffed, his fist bloodied, "Nothing wrong? Juliana, with 1.5 billion dollars in your bank, why didn't you settle the gambling debts? This whole mess is just a sick game you've been playing, right?"Juliana's eyes flickered with fear. "I... I don't know what you're talking about. That money... It's from investments,

As the car sped away from the casino, Chester frantically pulled out his phone and dialed the bank, his next move shrouded in mystery.Seth's hand shot out, gripping Chester's wrist. "Hold on a sec!"Chester jerked away, irritation lacing his voice. "Let go! Tania's in trouble. Every second counts!"Seth snorted dismissively. "Why the panic? Tania's been nothing but trouble for Juliana. Maybe it's time she learned her place."The casino is only after her cash, not her life. A few days to cool her heels might do her some good. When we get her out, she'll probably be a little more... agreeable."Chester paused as the words sank in. Ever since my rebirth, the way I had targeted Juliana and the coldness I had shown him at my mother's grave had been like thorns in his heart. Maybe this so-called 'lesson' was meant to make me obedient again, just like in our previous life.He hesitated, but then Juliana was there, her voice dripping with sweetness. "Don't fret, Chester. As we headed to the casino, Chester sighed."I know. You were reborn, too."I laughed, but there was no humor in it."Reborn or not, what difference does it make? Are you going to start playing favorites now?""I'm sorry," he murmured, almost inaudible.I just shook my head, at a loss for words. "Chester, is that all you've got after all this time?"Out of nowhere, he pulled me close and kissed me senselessly."Tania," he whispered, his forehead resting gently against mine, his voice a solemn vow, "I promise, this is the last time you'll have to go through anything like this."We're just hitting the casino, dropping some cash to get your sister out of trouble. You'll be okay."And after that, I'll make you my wife. I'll spend every day making it up to you."I tried to smile, but my voice came out raspy."Chester, just one last question for you. Don't you see she's just playing us for attention?"Chester paused, his eyes darting away from mine. "I... I don't know."Not know
