After the Spouse Swap, He Fell Apart for Me
Penulis: Wild Wheat

Chapter 1

Penulis: Wild Wheat
Celine Sherman and I were supposed to get married on the same day.

Three days before my wedding, by the uncanniest of coincidences, I found out that my fiancé, Andrew Hammond, intended to swap the two wedding cars intended for Celine and me, respectively.

Celine was supposed to marry into the struggling and powerless Wright family, but Andrew planned to have me take her place.

His words came as a huge shock to me, and it was something that I never would've seen coming.

Just as I was about to head into the room he was in and confront him, the sound of quiet sobbing rang out.

"Thank you so much for everything you're doing for me, Andy," Celine said. "But considering my identity, even marrying into the Wright family is a blessing for me. Are you sure it's worth it for you to go to such lengths for me?"

Andrew's voice was tender and full of pity as he insisted, "I forbid you from saying that about yourself, Celine! Even though you're not biologically related to the Shermans, I'll see to it that you get just as much as what Joanna gets from them.

"Here are some shares in Hammond Group, as well as the deed for some of the land my family owns. I've already made all the arrangements for you. Once the wedding day arrives, you just have to leave without worrying about anything.

"As soon as Joanna and I complete our wedding ceremony, I'll come and look for you."

"Andy! Are you crazy?" Celine choked out. "Those are too valuable. I can't accept them!"

Andrew pulled her into his arms and declared, "Nothing is more valuable than your happiness."

The other people in the room chuckled and teasingly remarked, "Since Andrew wants to give it to you, just take it, Celine. In the future, not only will he have the Hammond family's fortune, but he'll have the Sherman family's wealth as well. What's a few deeds and shares in comparison to that?"

Laughing, Andrew chided his friends, but his tone was just as smug.

He then proceeded to take out an exquisite emerald necklace and said to Celine, "Stop worrying so much.

"Here. This emerald necklace is the Hammonds' family heirloom. This should be enough to reassure you, right?"

After carefully putting the necklace on for Celine, he said, "But make sure you don't wear it on our wedding day, just in case it messes things up when we switch the cars."

Celine's eyes crinkled in joy, but she soon began frowning again. "But what if Joanna finds out about this?"

"Joanna trusts me completely. She won't doubt a word I say," Andrew confidently replied. "Once you leave, I'll pick her up myself, and everything will be fine.

"Now, go get some rest. My friends and I will need to run through the details of the plan for the wedding day again to ensure that nothing goes wrong."

Their voices slowly faded out of earshot as I walked out of the house. As I stared up at the sky, I felt chilled to the bone.

"Joanna?"

At some point, Celine appeared and grabbed me from behind. When she noticed my hollow, dazed expression, she raised her eyebrows and gently caressed the emerald necklace around her neck.

"I guess you heard everything, didn't you? Andy says that this necklace can only be worn by the daughter-in-law of the Hammond family. Do you like it?

"Even if you do, however, it doesn't matter at all. Andy gave it to me!"

The smug, haughty look on Celine's face was completely foreign to me. I could hardly recognize her.

Under the sunlight, the emerald necklace gleamed brightly.

Frowning, I took a step forward. Yet, just as I was about to speak, Andrew showed up and grabbed my wrist. "Ever since you got the necklace, you just left it there collecting dust anyway. I thought it'd suit Celine quite well, so I took it out and gave it to her to wear for a few days."

Meanwhile, Celine stood behind Andrew with a pitiful, helpless look on her face. It was a stark contrast from the look of gloating delight she had earlier.

"Andy, maybe I should just return the necklace to Joanna anyway. I don't want to upset her."

Andrew gave her a reassuring pat on the hand before saying to me in a commanding tone, "It's just a necklace. Besides, when it comes down to it, the necklace belongs to my family, the Hammonds. I can give it to whoever I want.

"I'm sure you're not that petty, right, Joanna?"

I remained silent and forced myself to maintain my composure. Then, I walked away from them.

My mother had designed that emerald necklace herself. It wasn't just the Hammonds' family heirloom, it was also the final piece of jewelry that Mom had made before she passed away.

For that very reason, when Mrs. Hammond had given me the necklace, I'd put it away to keep it safe.

I'd looked forward to wearing it on my wedding day. It would be like Mom was there to witness that significant and joyous moment of my life.

Then, a few days ago, Andrew abruptly told me that he wanted to send the necklace to a jeweler for maintenance.

I didn't think much of it then. But who would've thought he'd take my most important belonging and give it to Celine instead?

It was such a clumsy excuse too. Like so many times before, he'd made it sound like he was just looking after my younger sister for me.

He did this despite knowing that I was the one who needed him the most, and despite knowing the true relationship between Celine, my so-called sister, and me.

Even though we shared the same last name, Celine was the daughter of my family's driver.

Five years ago, there had been a car accident that changed the entire trajectory of our lives. Three people died in that crash—my parents, and Celine's father.

Since Celine and I had grown up together, I publicly declared that she was basically a sister to me. I had truly treated her as one as well. I'd even asked Andrew to look out for her.

But of course, I never expected his care for her to extend this far.

Nevertheless, it didn't matter anymore.

Slowly but surely, I walked away.

All along, I'd always obliged whenever Celine or Andrew asked me for something. This time, just like always, I was going to grant their wish as well.

The familiar warmth of Hugo's scent and touch slowly calmed me down.Andrew continued to scream my name, but his show of regret and love was meaningless to me now.Hugo stared at me with concerned eyes. "I can't believe the nerve of that bastard! How dare he come here to look for you!"How should we deal with him, Joanna? I can kill him off for you."Shaking my head, I said, "I want to let him leave. He'd be getting off too easily if he just died like that."Hugo pondered in silence for a spell, but he chose to respect my decision—as he often did. He would never make decisions for me. Not only did he let me choose, but he also backed me up.I hugged him tightly, saying, "I need you to help me with something."It was a piece of cake for Hugo to find out where Andrew and Celine were living now. I was shocked to find that they'd become so impoverished that they had to stay in a tiny basement unit.Hugo's bodyguard pounded on the door for what felt like minutes before someone came

Andrew was so gaunt that I almost didn't recognize him. His cheeks were sunken, and his cheekbones were jutting out beneath hollow eyes. The once-handsome man now looked positively frightening."I didn't believe it when Celine told me, but it really is you," Andrew said, his voice hoarse and grating on the ears."Why did you lie to me, Joanna? Why did you trick me into thinking you were dead? Do you have any idea how much I regretted everything? How much I missed you?"My company went bankrupt because of you. I think of you every time I see Celine. I hate myself every time I see my own reflection in the mirror. But what about you? Why do you get to run around living a life of luxury instead?"He kept advancing, backing me onto the bed. Clutching the blanket, I pressed myself against the headboard. I started speaking, hoping to distract him while I pressed the emergency button beside the bed."What right do you have to question me, Andrew? Did you even consider how much pain and

Hugo and I moved abroad and settled down together. At first, I would still occasionally think about the pain Andrew and Celine had caused me. But as time passed, the bright sunshine and Hugo's endless affection gradually washed those memories away. But just when I thought I'd completely forgotten about the past, I saw Celine again.Hugo and I were having an engagement party that day. It was held at a magnificent, romantic castle. Everything was going smoothly when all of a sudden, someone stormed into the hall."Joanna! It really is you, you liar! You didn't die!"It was Celine. She came charging at me like a madwoman, shouting, "You tricked Andy! You're the reason why he started treating me so coldly. It's all your fault! You took away all of his love for me! I hate you!"Celine didn't get to say much. She didn't even get anywhere near me before the guards dragged her out by force.Hugo's expression was icy. "How dare she ruin our engagement party? She's asking for it."Pattin

Hugo said that upon returning to the country this year, he'd immediately wanted to come and see me. But by then, I'd already accepted Andrew's proposal. Thus, he started looking into Andrew. It didn't take much digging for him to discover the illicit relationship between Andrew and Celine. That was why he'd volunteered himself when I began looking for someone to marry Celine.Hugo brushed his thumb lightly over the corner of my lips. "I just wanted to see how Andrew planned on handling this situation. If he'd chosen to give up on Celine, I would've given him a chance. If he didn't, then I'd never let you marry him."I didn't expect that fool to end up delivering you to me instead. If I'd known this was the kind of man he was, I would've come back sooner. "This time, Joanna, I won't be letting you go ever again."It wasn't hard at all for me to accept Hugo. After all, W and I shared a strong bond. He was the one who accompanied me through many of the darkest moments of my life,

Andrew had no clue that the funeral was merely a show put on solely for him. Hugo had said that if I wanted to fake my death, I had to make it convincing. When the drug's effect ended, Hugo was the first person I saw upon regaining consciousness. I was startled. He was nothing like what I'd expected him to be.Despite being the heir of a family that had fallen from grace, he had a strong, commanding presence and a fierce, imposing gaze. He gave off the air of sophisticated superiority. But more importantly, something about his face felt familiar to me."Have we met before?"Instead of answering my question, Hugo smiled and said, "We've met at last, miss."A lightbulb lit up in my head.Once the drug had entered my system, I couldn't speak or move, but I could still hear everything that happened around me.I'd heard everything Hugo said to Andrew. This meant that not only was he aware of the plan to switch the wedding cars, but he even knew about my plan to fake my death."Ju

Andrew clutched my hands. The soft, delicate hands he used to hold were now cold and stiff."Open your eyes, Joanna! Look at me! It's me, Andrew. I've come for you… You haven't walked down the aisle as my bride yet. How can you leave me!"Eyes bloodshot, Andrew glared at Hugo and demanded, "What the hell happened? You'd better give me a proper explanation, Hugo. Or else, I'll make sure every single person in the entire Wright family goes to hell!"Snorting, Hugo remarked, "It does indeed give me great sorrow to find that Joanna Sherman has passed away, but… I was supposed to be marrying Celine Sherman. Why was Joanna the one in the car yesterday?"It couldn't possibly be because you couldn't bear to part with either sister, so you decided to play a little trick, right, Mr. Hammond?"His words were akin to rubbing salt into Andrew's wound. Too cowardly to face the remorse and regret in his heart, he resorted to fury to mask his feelings."Who gave you the audacity to be so cocky w
