Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
"Of course, if you're willing to lick every bit of phlegm I just spat onto the floor, I might consider letting one doctor go save your daughter."

I knew he was humiliating me.

However, when I pictured Anna's pale, frightened face, I clenched my fists, ignored the mocking stares around me, and slowly bent down. Fighting back my nausea, I licked the thick glob of phlegm off the floor until it was completely gone.

I looked up at him.

"Now... will you let a doctor save Anna?"

To my shock, Wade simply smirked. "I said I'd consider it. I never promised I'd actually send a doctor."

He laughed. "However, I have to admit, watching you do that was hilarious."

"Wade... you tricked me?"

Rage exploded inside me. I swung my fist and punched him hard across the face.

Wade looked ready to hit me back. Then, as if he had suddenly noticed someone behind me, his expression changed instantly. He deliberately threw himself onto the floor, clutching his cheek as tears welled in his eyes.

"Elliot... I honestly don't know what I ever did to make you hate me so much. If you really can't stand having me around, then once Dobie's leg heals, I'll quit. I'll take Dobie with me and leave. I promise I'll never appear in front of you again."

The next second, a hard slap landed across my face. A burning pain spread through my cheek. I looked up and met Sophie's furious eyes.

"Elliot! I was only gone for a few minutes to buy Dobie a toy, yet you took the chance to bully Wade? Throwing a tantrum is one thing, but you've gone way too far."

My eyes burned red. "Sophie, Anna is dying! She needs a doctor right now, and he's been stopping them from treating her! He's trying to kill Anna! What's wrong with me hitting him?"

Sophie's gaze suddenly dropped to my shirt. Her pupils shrank. "Why is your shirt covered in blood? Did something happen to Anna?"

Just as she began to waver, Wade spoke up again. "Sophie, that's obviously fake blood. Elliot must have put it on himself.

"Your rescue team already said they got Anna down safely. And if she were really in danger, would Elliot have time to come here arguing with me? I think he's still angry because you saved Dobie first, so he's making up lies and causing trouble to stop Dobie's surgery."

He lowered his head, looking hurt.

"I just never imagined Elliot hated Dobie and me this much. He's even using his own daughter as an excuse just to sabotage the operation."

The hesitation in Sophie's eyes disappeared instantly. Only cold disappointment remained. "Elliot, just to prove you're right, you're actually cursing your own daughter. "I have never been more disappointed in you. Anna is unlucky to have a father like you."

She turned toward the doorway. "Security! What are you waiting for? Throw this troublemaker out!"

Before I could explain a single word, five security guards rushed in and dragged me out of the room by force. As they hauled me through the hospital, patients on both sides pointed at me and whispered.

"He's jealous enough to curse his own daughter."

"What a heartless monster."

By the time I finally made it back to Anna, her little face had turned so pale that it was terrifying. With what little strength she had left, she reached up and gently wiped the tears from the corner of my eye. Blood bubbled from the corner of her mouth as she whispered weakly,

"Daddy... Don't cry... In my next life... I still want you... to be my daddy..."

The moment those words left her lips, her tiny hand fell limp.

"Anna!" I clutched her icy little body and screamed until my voice broke.

However, she would never wipe away my tears again. She would never smile and call me 'Daddy' again.

It felt as though my soul had been ripped out of me.

Numb and hollow, I took Anna to be cremated. Before long, all that remained of my little girl was a light urn resting in my hands.

When it came time to lay her to rest, I realized I could not even afford the 3,000 dollars in funeral expenses.

Over the years, Sophie had always insisted on controlling every penny Anna and I spent. She said she did not want us developing wasteful habits.

Every month, she gave us only 500 dollars for living expenses, and every purchase had to be written down in detail and approved by her first.

At that moment, my phone buzzed.

It was Wade's latest social media post: [Dobie's broken leg needed surgery, so Sophie bought him a solid gold dog chain to comfort him! Dobie gets a gold chain, and I get a gold necklace!]

"Elliot... I'm sorry. This is all my fault. But Wade lied to me. I truly believed Anna was safe. That's why I thought you were just making a scene. If I'd known something had happened to her, I never would've stood by and let her die."Tears streamed down Sophie's face. "Ever since I learned the truth, I've been drowning in guilt. I can't sleep or eat. I regret everything, and I miss you so much I'm losing my mind."She looked at me desperately. "Do you know what I did to get justice for Anna? I bribed a prison guard to break one of Wade's legs. And the vicious dog that caused Anna's death has already been legally euthanized."She took another step closer. "I've avenged you and Anna. Please stop being angry with me. Come home with me, okay?"As if to prove she was telling the truth, Sophie even played videos on her phone. One showed Wade lying on the ground with his leg broken, and the other showed Dobie being euthanized.I simply pulled my hand away from hers. "It doesn't matter.

The bottle hit the floor, scattering the asthma pills everywhere. As Sophie stared at the pills, she immediately realized they looked nothing like the vitamin pills Wade had claimed Anna was taking.Only then did the truth finally sink in.Anna had never been faking her asthma. She had been deceived by Wade all along.Something inside Sophie seemed to snap. Tears poured uncontrollably down her face as she collapsed onto the floor, sobbing in complete despair."Anna... Elliot... I'm sorry. I was wrong."However, regret that came too late meant nothing. Neither Anna nor I could see it anymore, and neither of us needed it.From that day on, Sophie resigned from her job and devoted herself to searching for Anna and me. However, I had already blocked every possible way for her to reach me. I had no relatives there, almost no friends, so no one knew where I had gone. Finding me was nearly impossible.Left with no other choice, Sophie started livestreaming online, hoping someone would

The security cameras had been installed by Sophie herself. However, as the years passed, she had completely forgotten they were even there. Wade, of course, never knew the house was under surveillance.Thankfully, he had not. Otherwise, there would never have been any evidence of his crimes. As Sophie had personally installed the cameras, she knew without a doubt that the footage was genuine. There was no way it had been fabricated. She stared at Wade, her voice so icy it sent chills through the room. "Wade, stop pretending. You're disgusting."Wade realized there was no point denying it anymore. An icy smile spread across his face."That's right. I did it. I smashed the floor-to-ceiling window, and I stopped the doctors from treating your daughter. I lied to you by telling you she'd already been rescued. The truth is, your fellow rescue workers never made it there that day. After you left, your daughter fell from the building."He chuckled. "Oh, and one more thing. Dobie was nev

I had filed the police report before leaving the country. After everything Wade had done to Anna, there was no way I was going to let him walk away without consequences. He deserved to pay for what he had done. The flood of information hit Sophie all at once. She stood there in stunned silence before turning to the officers in disbelief. "Officer, there has to be some kind of misunderstanding. My daughter is fine, and Wade would never kill anyone. I know what kind of person he is..."The irony was almost laughable.Ever since Wade was hired as our nanny, Sophie's heart started to drift toward him. She trusted him without question. Yet every word that came out of my mouth was met with suspicion. Whenever I tried to explain myself, she accused me of making excuses.Everything I did, no matter how reasonable or innocent, became proof in her eyes that I was jealous of Wade.Maybe I should have divorced her the moment she started taking his side. I should never have clung to our marria

Wade had meant to use the opportunity to recommend himself as Anna's new father. However, Sophie completely misunderstood what he meant."Elliot has gone too far this time! If he loves lying so much, then I'm going to expose him in front of everyone and make him pay for it."With that, Sophie drove straight to the crematorium. Wade followed close behind. The moment they arrived, Sophie marched over to a staff member and confronted them."Enough with the act. I know Elliot and Anna are hiding here. Whatever Elliot paid you to put on this performance, I'll pay you double. So, stop wasting my time and tell them to come out."The staff member actually laughed."Mrs. Robinson, I'm not an actor, and no one's putting on a show. I asked you to come because your daughter left behind some personal belongings. And honestly, I've never met such an irresponsible mother. Your daughter has been dead for three days, and you didn't even know?"Perhaps because Sophie had cursed her out over the ph

"Ms. Lynch, Mr. Robinson bought a plane ticket to Artemis City three days ago. He's already left the country."Sophie froze mid-step. For a long moment, she could not move. "What did you say? Elliot left the country? He loves me more than anything. How could he possibly leave the country when he knows I can't?"Ever since Sophie's father fell in love with a foreign woman, divorced her mother, and abandoned his wife and daughter to move overseas, Sophie had been traumatized by anything related to other countries. For her, going abroad was completely off-limits. She could not even bear to hear the word 'overseas'.When we first started dating, I did not know about her trauma, so I surprised her by booking tickets to Frostholm, hoping we could take a trip together and grow closer. When Sophie found out, she flew into a rage. She refused to speak to me for an entire month. In the end, I had to transfer 300,000 to her and kneel on a keyboard for an entire day and night before she final
