The house was quiet.

Upstairs, behind a closed bedroom door, Rhea slept deeply under the strong medication the doctors had prescribed. Her fractured wrist rested in a fresh cast, and a small white bandage stood out against her forehead. Every now and then, Melissa paused at the bottom of the staircase, her eyes fixed on the hallway leading to her daughter’s room. She had already checked on Rhea three times in less than twenty minutes. Each visit ended the same way: quietly brushing a stray strand of hair from her daughter’s face, watching the gentle rise and fall of her breathing, then slipping back downstairs with a heavy heart.

Only when she was finally convinced that Rhea was resting peacefully did Melissa return to the living room.

Alaric stood near the fireplace, his jacket draped over one arm. A fresh bandage wrapped around the back of his hand, though dried streaks of blood still marked the cuff of his white shirt. His posture was composed as always, but there was a visible weariness in the set of his shoulders and the faint shadows beneath his eyes.

Melissa lowered herself onto the sofa and let out a long, exhausted breath.

“I’m sorry.”

Alaric turned to look at her. She managed a faint, apologetic smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

“I know I put everyone through hell at the hospital,” she said softly, guilt thick in her voice. “I barely let the doctor finish speaking before I demanded they discharge her. I must have seemed completely irrational.”

“You were frightened,” Alaric replied simply, his tone gentle.

“I was.” Her voice cracked on the admission. She clasped her hands tightly in her lap, staring down at them as if the answers she desperately needed might be written across her skin. “I shouldn’t have reacted that way. At least… not without explaining myself.”

Alaric didn’t interrupt. He simply waited, giving her the space she needed. The silence between them felt heavy but not uncomfortable, like two people carrying burdens they weren’t quite ready to share.

Melissa drew in a slow, shaky breath.

“I used to work there. As a doctor. Years ago.” Her eyes remained fixed on the floor. “I haven’t stepped inside that hospital since the day I left.” She swallowed hard. “When I heard Rhea had been taken there tonight… I wasn’t thinking straight. I was terrified.” She let out a bitter laugh that held no humor. “I didn’t even realize it was the same hospital.”

Her voice grew quieter.

“Then I looked around. The emergency entrance… the nurses’ station… the old surgical wing… the logo on the wall…” She closed her eyes briefly. “And it all came rushing back.”

Her gaze drifted toward the staircase again.

“I buried that part of my life years ago. I wanted Rhea to grow up untouched by it.” She blinked away fresh tears. “I’ve spent twenty-three years making sure she never had to carry my past.”

“You believe the hospital is lying about the driver?” Alaric asked carefully.

Melissa hesitated. Then she slowly shook her head.

“I don’t know.” Her answer was painfully honest. “But I learned a long time ago that not everything inside those walls is what it seems.” Her fingers tightened together. “You told me you saw the paramedics take him away.”

“I did.”

“And yet…” She looked up at him, fear lingering in her eyes. “They tell us he was never admitted.” She shook her head. “It doesn’t make sense.”

The room fell into another heavy silence. Alaric remained quiet. He could see the fear etched across Melissa’s face, but he sensed she wasn’t ready to tell him everything. Whatever had happened in that hospital years ago had left wounds that time hadn’t healed. For now, he chose not to press her. Not while Rhea lay sleeping upstairs.

“I appreciate you bringing her home,” Melissa said after a long pause, her voice thick with gratitude. “And… thank you. For everything you did tonight.”

Alaric gave a small nod.

“You don’t have to thank me.”

Melissa offered him a tired smile.

“I should have told you sooner that I once worked there.”

Before Alaric could respond, his phone vibrated against the coffee table. The screen lit up with Matt’s name. He glanced briefly at Melissa before picking it up.

“Excuse me.”

He stepped onto the terrace, closing the glass doors quietly behind him before answering.

“What is it?”

Matt didn’t waste time.

“He woke up.”

Alaric’s expression hardened. The cool night breeze swept across the terrace as he stared into the darkness beyond the gardens. He knew exactly who Matt was talking about. For several long seconds, he said nothing. His eyes drifted toward the second-floor bedroom window where Rhea slept peacefully, unaware of everything unfolding around her. His jaw tightened.

“Keep him alive.”

A brief silence followed. Then Alaric spoke again, his voice low and unwavering.

“I’m coming.”

  • Alaric Thorne: My Mother's Dangerous Man   Another woman

"I said I'm fine, Mom."Noah lifted another shirt from the bed and folded it into the open bag beside him.Serena stood near the doorway, watching him with growing concern. "You're not fine. You were in an accident a few days ago, and you're already packing your things as though nothing happened.""It was a minor accident.""You were taken to the hospital.""And they discharged me."Noah closed the small travelling bag and pulled the zipper shut. Several days had passed since the accident, and aside from a few bruises and the stitches above his eyebrow, he had recovered well enough to return to his normal routine. The accident had happened after he left Rhea. He had been drinking, overwhelmed by everything that had happened between them, and had driven while tipsy. On his way home, he lost control of the car and collided with the side of the road. Thankfully, the accident had been minor, leaving him shaken and bruised but with no serious injuries.Serena had barely allowed him out of

Rhea stepped out of the taxi with her handbag slung over her shoulder, every part of her body aching from the emotional conversation she had just had with Noah. The evening air was cool against her skin, but it did little to quiet the storm inside her. His words kept replaying in her head.Do you still love me?She tightened her grip on the strap of her bag. She hadn’t answered. Not because she didn’t know the answer. Because she did. She just couldn’t bear to say it out loud.As she reached the front gate, raised voices drifted toward her.“…you need to leave.”Rhea frowned. That was her mother’s voice. She quickened her pace. The front yard came into view, and she immediately saw Melissa standing near the porch. Her mother looked more upset than Rhea had ever seen her, her hands trembling slightly at her sides as she faced a man whose back was turned toward the gate.“I’ve asked you to leave,” Melissa said again, her voice shaking with restrained emotion. “Please… just go.”The man

Work was over, and Rhea stepped out of the revolving doors with her handbag resting lightly against her shoulder. The day was finally over, and she was ready to go home and try to process the fact that Alaric was her CEO.She had been so lost in thought that she almost walked straight past him.“Noah?”She stopped abruptly. He stood a few feet away on the sidewalk, hands buried inside the pockets of his jacket. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Rhea felt her chest tighten. The last time they had seen each other had been awful. The last time they had spoken over the phone, they had both been lying to themselves that they were done.Standing before her now, Noah looked rough. His beard had grown in. Dark circles rested beneath his eyes. His clothes were neat, but there was an exhaustion about him that couldn’t be hidden. He looked like someone who hadn’t slept properly in days. He managed a small smile. “Hi.”The simple greeting made something inside Rhea ache. It was really awkward

Rhea’s lips remained parted long after Alaric had walked past her. She was so shocked she neither moved nor blinked. She simply stood there, rooted to the floor, her mind refusing to process what had just happened.CEO Thorne. The words echoed relentlessly inside her head. It was Alaric. Her mother’s boyfriend. The man she had been avoiding ever since that disastrous dinner. The same man who had saved her life. Her CEO.“What the fuck, Rhea!”Maya hurried over, looking just as stunned as she did.“What the hell was that?”Rhea slowly turned to look at her.“I…”She couldn’t even finish her sentence. Maya grabbed both of her shoulders, careful not to touch the arm in the cast.“Your mom’s boyfriend is CEO Thorne?”Rhea stared blankly.“I didn’t know.”“You didn’t know?” Maya almost squeaked before lowering her voice when a few nearby employees glanced in their direction. “Rhea… that’s impossible.”“I swear.”Maya searched her face for any sign that she was joking. There wasn’t one.“Oh

  • Alaric Thorne: My Mother's Dangerous Man   Wait.. what?

Rhea stirred slowly. A dull ache pulsed behind her eyes. The first thing she noticed was the unfamiliar heaviness around her right wrist. She frowned and tried to move it, only for a sharp sting to shoot up her arm. Her eyes fluttered open. Morning sunlight filtered softly through the curtains, bathing the room in a warm golden glow. For a few seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling. Then everything came rushing back. Her breathing caught. She pushed herself up slightly before another wave of dizziness forced her back against the pillows. A quiet rustling sound drew her attention. She turned her head. Melissa sat in the chair beside the bed, fast asleep. Sometime during the night, exhaustion had finally claimed her. Her head rested against the edge of the mattress, one hand still loosely wrapped around Rhea’s uninjured hand, as though she had been afraid to let go. Her eyes were swollen from crying, and loose strands of hair had escaped her messy bun, falling across her face. Rhea

  • Alaric Thorne: My Mother's Dangerous Man   Silence has a price

Silence. The driver didn’t answer. He simply lowered his eyes, staring at the floor as though the question had never been asked. Alaric wasn’t surprised. He held the man’s gaze for several long seconds, patient and unyielding. “Who hired you?” Still nothing. Not a word. Not even the slightest shake of the head. The driver remained perfectly still, hiding behind a wall of silence. The room grew quiet again. One minute passed. Then another. Alaric never repeated himself. He simply watched — every breath, every twitch, every tiny movement. Years of negotiating with powerful men had taught him one thing: silence made people uncomfortable. Eventually, someone always broke. Matt did first. “For God’s sake,” he muttered, pushing himself away from the wall. The driver never looked up. Alaric spoke again, his voice calm. “You’ve already failed.” No response. “You were caught.” Nothing. “And whoever sent you hasn’t come looking.” For the briefest moment, the driver’s jaw tightened
