BRIAN

My hands were still shaking.

Lisa was lying unconscious on the hospital bed, a faint bruise visible under the bandages on her forehead. I couldn’t stop staring at her. Every breath she took made my own chest tighten.

I swallowed hard and looked at Adrian, who was still standing like a statue, fury all over his face. I expected that actually.

Then…

I cleared my throat.

“Thank you.”

Adrian lifted a brow. “For what?”

“You stopped that nurse,” I said quietly. “If you hadn’t walked in, she might’ve actually injected that… that thing.”

My voice cracked; I forced myself to steady it. “I owe you for that.”

Adrian exhaled sharply, rolling his neck like he was still ready to fight someone.

His eyes flicked to Lisa again.

“Don’t thank me,” he muttered. “I wasn’t about to let Monica destroy a life.”

I nodded halfway… then forced myself to say what needed to be said.

“Still… you should leave now.”

Adrian’s head snapped toward me.
