Chapter 5

Penulis: Nameless
Ally just stood there, stunned.

A moment later, something that almost looked like guilt crept into her usually cold expression.

She tightened her grip on my arm.

"Let's go on a trip. You've been cooped up at home long enough."

I thought of the foreign language exam I still had to prepare for and shook my head.

"No, I'm fine here."

Her arm went rigid around mine.

"But I already booked it."

"Then take someone else."

"Robby," she frowned. "It's a couples' retreat. Customized for us."

I lowered my eyes. Fireworks bloomed in her irises.

If I'd heard this even a few days earlier, that she'd actually put thought into planning a couples' retreat just for us, I'd have thrown my arms around her without a second thought. I'd always loved playing the part of her husband so much that I wanted the whole world to know we were together.

But now, I just smiled faintly.

"Thanks for the thought. But I really can't go."

Disbelief washed over her face.

I gently pushed her hand away.

"It's freezing out here. Let's go back inside."

I turned and opened the door. When I looked back, Ally hadn't followed.

Instead, she climbed into her car, slammed the door hard enough to echo through the street, started the engine, and drove off.

She always did this. Whenever we disagreed, she'd leave me standing there, then block every way I had of reaching her and wait for me to burn through all my own frustration before I came crawling back, ready to "let bygones be bygones," too worn out to fight anymore.

But this time, I didn't send a single message.

I opened the door and went inside.

Ally didn't come home for an entire week.

I didn't ask about it either. Every day, I just had tea with Clayton, drilled vocabulary, and practiced my speaking. I'd also officially started my new job, and Clayton had already advanced me part of my salary.

"The share transfer still needs a little time, but you'll get it all back eventually. Our equity's actually gone up a lot since you got married."

Clayton filled me in cheerfully on how the company had grown over the years.

The more I listened, the more it stung.

"You've worked hard all these years."

Just as I said it, my phone chimed with a notification from Instagram, from someone I'd marked as a close follow. It was Zack.

I used to always be bothered by how close Ally was with her childhood friend living overseas, since she made a point of visiting him every single time she traveled abroad. Part of me hated the thought of them being so close, and part of me couldn't help wanting to know exactly what went on between them. So, more out of my own discomfort than anything, I'd marked Zack as a close follow.

His latest post showed him in sunglasses, sitting in a helicopter, his arm around someone's shoulders as he snapped a happy selfie. The caption read: [Who says childhood friends can't go on a couples' trip?]

The person beside him wore sunglasses and a mask too, but I recognized Ally at a glance.

I didn't call to demand an explanation for why she'd taken Zack along. I just gave the post a like and unfollowed him.

The moment I set my phone down, Ally called.

"I'm coming home for dinner tonight."

"Oh," I said, not quite catching her meaning. "Should I save you a plate?"

There was something restrained in Ally's voice.

"Robby, you really don't know what I mean?"

The receipts came with the finance department's official stamp on every one.She turned the stack over in her hands for a long time, looking through it again and again, before finally clutching it in her palm, looking almost despairing."This whole time, this is really all you ever asked me for?""Yeah."In three years, the money she'd spent on me didn't add up to a fraction of the welcome-home gift she'd given Zack. And still, she'd spent that whole time worried I was bleeding her dry.She sank onto the couch, and in an instant, she seemed to lose all the color in her face.I sat down beside her. She kept her head bowed, and after a moment, I heard her say, barely audible, "I'm sorry.""It's fine."I set the divorce agreement down in front of her.Ally looked up, staring at the document in front of her, stunned.I stood up."Think it over. I'll come find you again in three days."I turned to leave."Where are you going?""I've rented a place outside. I'm planning to move

A lamp glowed in the living room. I'd been on the couch reading, half asleep, when the sound of the door snapped me awake.Ally stood in the doorway."I heard you got into a car accident. Let me go with you to a follow-up tomorrow?"It had been so long since my accident, and she was only just now finding out. If she'd still cared about me as her husband at all, she wouldn't have been the last to know about something like this."Thanks, but you don't need to. I already have plans tomorrow.""But I want to go with you!" she said frantically.I shook my head. "You don't need to."I turned and headed for the bedroom. As I passed her, she reached out and grabbed my hand.Three years of marriage, and this was the first time she'd ever held my hand this tight."You saw the pregnancy test today. You really don't have anything to say?"I didn't know what she wanted to hear."What am I supposed to say?"The hand gripping mine trembled. Even Ally's voice shook."What happened to the

"Ow... that hurts..."I noticed Ally's hand pause on the wheel."What's wrong? Is your old injury acting up again?"Zack's frown deepened. "I don't know... it just hurts. Ally, can you take me to the hospital?"Going to the hospital meant driving in the opposite direction of where we were headed. The nearest one was over ten kilometers away.Ally glanced at me in the mirror."But...""Ow... Ally... I don't think I can take it..."Ally's grip tightened on the wheel. She slammed on the brakes."Robby, get out."The same script as always. Between me and Zack, I was always the one who got left behind.Except this time, I didn't make a scene. I just opened the door and got out."Sure, okay."Ally froze for a second. I turned and started walking back the way we'd come. She rolled down the window."Robby!"I looked back. She hesitated."I'll come home for dinner tonight."I paused awhile before replying, "Don't bother. Looks like he needs you more. Why don't you two just orde

I didn't answer. She hung up.We didn't have a housekeeper at home. Partly because she couldn't stomach anyone else's cooking but mine, and partly because, over time, she'd decided hiring one would only make me lazier. When I got home, I made dinner for two and texted her: [What time do you think you'll be back?]She didn't reply.I didn't wait up like a fool until midnight the way I used to. I just ate my own portion and moved on. After waiting a while longer with still no word from her, I wrapped her plate in plastic and stuck it in the fridge.I still had vocabulary to study and no time to waste on chasing her down. Studying at home like this felt inconvenient, though, so I decided to head to the library the next day instead. That way I wouldn't have to worry about her coming home and interrupting me.The next day, I went to the library. By the time hunger caught up with me, it was already dark outside.I suddenly realized I hadn't thought about Ally once, all day. Turns out

"You two grew up together. Why would I be jealous?" I said.Ally's hand tightened on my shoulder. For the first time, in one of our clashes, she was the one left speechless.Half-asleep, I felt her hand slide over my stomach. I jolted awake and grabbed it at once."I don't want to."She wrapped her arms around me."But it's been so long since we..."I tightened my grip on her hand."Are you really not even curious why I went to the hospital today?"My expense report had clearly stated it was for surgery, but from start to finish, she hadn't asked me a single question about how I was doing. She laughed."I know, it's probably nothing more than a headache or a little fever. Let your wife make it up to you now, hm?""I don't want to."I wrapped the blanket tighter around myself."I told you, I'm tired."In my relationship with Ally, I was always the one who tolerated everything from her. I was always the one begging her for things. Refusing her like this had never once happ
