Chapter 3

Author: Cool Husky
I couldn't care less and told Hailey to go ahead and sue me.

If that slap was domestic abuse, what she and Jaxon had done could easily pass as attempted murder. I clearly told them that I was allergic to lilies, yet they forced me into contact with the allergen anyway.

That was pure, malicious intent.

After I was discharged, I stayed home on medical leave to recover. Hailey started getting restless and ordered me back to work, threatening to mark it as absenteeism if I didn't show up.

I had never responded well to threats or being pushed around, so I just ignored her.

She eventually softened her attitude again, just to get me back to work and cut the company's losses.

One day, she got off work early and cooked a meal for me. The table was full of my favorite hot, spicy dishes, and they tasted pretty decent.

I decided to show her some grace and enjoy the meal. Just as I was about to lay things out and talk about ending our relationship on good terms, Jaxon called.

Hailey picked it up right in front of me and accidentally put it on speaker. His voice came through the phone.

"Ms. Miller, did Mr. Chase enjoy the pre-made meals I bought? If he's still upset, I can come over and apologize to him. I'll do anything for work."

She shot me a guilty look and lowered her voice, stammering a reply, "H-he thinks they're okay, and don't worry about it. You shouldn't have to suffer for him."

I let out a cold laugh. Did she think I was dead?

Then, I called her out on the spot. "Wow, talk about zero sincerity. I can't believe you're feeding me pre-made meals."

Hailey froze and looked at me, flustered. "You know I can't cook. Pre-made meals can still taste good, right?"

I set my utensils down, having lost my appetite in an instant.

Couldn't she have told me the truth? It was such a waste of time.

"I can go back to work, only if you and Jaxon both apologize to me."

Hailey's expression immediately darkened, and she flipped the table over in a rage. "Don't push your luck, Landon. Don't think I can't survive without you!"

I just gave her a cold smile. It wasn't that she couldn't survive without me, but rather that the company couldn't—not unless she was willing to walk away from the project I had developed.

She had poured too much money into it that the sunk costs were staggering. That gave me all the leverage I needed to set my own terms.

"I'm not the one pushing my luck. If anything, I'm the one doing you a favor. You and Jaxon nearly killed me, and an apology is the least you owe me. You could both end up in prison if I decide to press charges."

Hailey was at a loss for words, and her expression was grim.

Meanwhile, shareholders and executives started piling on the pressure in the office group chat again. The project was stalled, yet the technical team's staffing and equipment maintenance were draining the accounts.

Some shareholders decided to pull out their investments to cut their losses, while core executives were handing in their resignations.

Hailey panicked and shot me a look of bitter resentment. "You want an apology, don't you? Fine! I apologize, and I'm sorry. Is that enough for you to come back to work?"

I couldn't accept such a hollow apology, so I marched into my room, locked the door, and shut her out. While she agitatedly pounded on the door, I put on my headphones and listened to music, acting like I couldn't hear anything.

Half an hour later, she sent me a long message.

"I'm so sorry, Landon. I sincerely apologize. I've called Jaxon over, too. Open the door so he can apologize to you."

I opened the door to find Jaxon on his knees. It seemed like he was really going all out.

"It was all my fault, Mr. Chase. I had no idea you were allergic to lilies, and I shouldn't have accepted Ms. Miller's gift. I'll return it. If you still can't stand the sight of me, I'll resign."

His eyes were red-rimmed, as if he had suffered great injustice.

Hailey looked like her heart ached for him, but she didn't stop him from kneeling either.

I agreed to return to work since they looked sincere right now.

But Jaxon only managed to behave for one day. The next day, he cornered me in the office restroom and started provoking me.

"You're just a tech geek. Do you honestly think the company can't run without you? Ms. Miller is interviewing new candidates, and Michael just got his hands on all your technical blueprints, so pack your bags and leave!

"The company and Hailey will only be mine!"

The hooligan slapped me hard across the face and spat in a menacing voice, "We just want a little money. Hailey says you're loaded."I shook my head and tried to talk him into letting me go. "Work as my bodyguard, and I'll pay you 150 thousand dollars a year. It's a stable job that's so much better than this dangerous racket."For a second, the hooligan looked tempted. He was about to agree when Hailey jumped in and stirred things up."Don't believe him! He wouldn't even help his ex-wife, so why would he treat a stranger well? Plus, you kidnapped him, so letting him go means you'll end up in prison!"I stared at her in disbelief. "You want me dead, don't you?"She let out a dark, twisted laugh, and her eyes were full of malice. "If I'm suffering, I'm dragging you down with me, too! Why won't you help me when all I'm asking is for a little money to pay off my debts?"Suppressing my disgust and rage, I pretended to stay calm and play along. "How much do you owe?""Just 50 million

I didn't want anything to do with Hailey anymore, so I told my clients to stop making jokes about my past. After all, Julia and I were about to get married, and the last thing I wanted was to make her jealous.I never imagined that Hailey would still be obsessed with me.One day, Julia and I were at a boutique shopping for wedding gowns when Hailey appeared out of nowhere, trying to get my attention. She wore the same wedding gown she had worn at our wedding and dropped to her knees in front of me."I'm sorry, Landon. Could you please forgive me? The three years I spent with you were the happiest days of my life. I know you still love me, so please don't marry Julia, alright? Come back to me!"I shook my head hard and told her to give up on the idea, but she refused. Instead, she clung to my leg and wouldn't let go.My patience finally snapped, and the harsh insults poured out. "How does someone like you have the nerve to come to me again, Hailey? Do you honestly think you're i

Hailey snapped at Jaxon, "You idiot! Can you even handle the project delivery if Landon's gone?"Jaxon didn't know a thing about actual work. The only thing he was good at was hooking up with women, so he just assumed that the partnership with Julia was set in stone. He was desperate to kick me out so I wouldn't steal the credit. After a month of careful preparations, my new company officially launched the following day.Big names in the industry showed up in droves to congratulate me, including Julia. She was our first official partner, and we kicked things off on our first project together.I was in the middle of a high-energy presentation, outlining the future of our project to a cheering crowd, when Hailey and Jaxon burst in, clearly looking for a fight. Hailey started accusing Julia of breaching their contract for canceling the partnership on the day of the project delivery.Julia slapped the official contract down in front of them and firmly said, "Your company failed to m

Julia, the company's biggest client, was the first to terminate all future partnerships.Hailey came to me for help, begging me to change Julia's mind.I took the chance to lay out my terms. "I can help you, but only if you finalize the divorce right now."She couldn't understand why I was so desperate. "It's just a month. Can't you even wait that long?"I pulled up the viral video that had spread across the internet and showed it to her so she could witness her humiliation on full display. "The whole internet knows you cheated. Do you really think I'd be willing to wait?"Hailey had no comeback for that, so we headed to the courthouse and signed the papers that day.The best part about a divorce was the immediate asset division. Over the last three years, while the real estate market boomed, I had encouraged her to invest our dividends into purchasing a dozen properties. They were all under her name because I had completely trusted her, so now, a divorce was the only way I c

"Don't play innocent in front of me, Hailey!" I snapped. "When you were out there cheating, did you ever stop to think about divorce? Or did you just assume that I'd keep putting up with you while you were out there messing around with other men?"My voice rang out loud and clear as I reminded Hailey of all the disgusting things she had done.A flicker of guilt crossed her face, but she stubbornly refused to admit to it. "Jaxon and I are just colleagues. It's not as ugly as you're making it sound."I let out a mocking laugh. "Do you really think I'm an idiot? You don't have to sign the papers because I'll just take it to court."For once, Hailey looked genuinely disappointed. "Does it really have to end with a divorce?"I couldn't bother to respond and turned to leave. A divorce wasn't the only lawsuit I was prepared to file anyway. But she grabbed my arm and said, "I'll sign the papers, only if you secure the deal with Julia."I shrugged. "And what's in it for me? I can proce

Hailey quickly explained, "Landon refuses to follow corporate directives, so I'm assigning someone more responsible to handle your project."Then, she pointed at Jaxon. "This is Mr. Preston, who studied abroad."Jaxon scurried over to suck up to Julia and extended a hand with a sycophantic grin. "A pleasure to meet you, Ms. Morrison. I look forward to working with you."Instead of taking his hand, Julia turned around to give Hailey a look of open disdain. "Isn't he your secretary? Have you lost your mind assigning someone with zero technical background to handle my project? Put Mr. Chase back in charge right now, or this partnership is off!"Jaxon's expression darkened at the humiliation, and he tried to salvage his dignity. "This is an internal company matter, Ms. Morrison. You don't have the right to—""Shut up!" Hailey snapped, cutting him off before he could finish.Julia's patience snapped. "Fine. If this is how you do business, the deal's off."With that, she turned around
