Chapter 1

After hanging up, I tossed the cake into the trash can.

I had never been a fan of such overly sweet stuff anyway. I only bought the cake to cater to Hailey Miller's tastes. There was no reason to force myself to eat it since she didn't appreciate the gesture.

I ordered a hot chicken sandwich, loaded with hot honey sauce and spicy mayo, and treated myself to something I actually enjoyed.

After eating my fill, I lay on the couch to rest.

I thought Hailey wouldn't come home tonight, but she showed up earlier than expected. The moment she walked through the door, she pinched her nose and snapped, "Did you sneak in spicy food behind my back?"

I didn't even look at her and lazily replied, "Eating spicy food isn't a crime, and it's not sneaking either. Doing dirty stuff behind someone's back is what sneaking really is."

Maybe I hit a nerve because Hailey immediately flew into a rage. She lunged forward, yanked me off the couch, and slapped me hard across the face.

"You know damn well I can't handle spice, so you did it on purpose just to spite me, didn't you? And stop with the snarky comments about me cheating. You have a filthy mind!"

I didn't even bother to argue. Instead, I took a photo of my face that was swollen from the slap and bleeding lip. This was proof of her domestic violence, which would come in handy in court.

She looked at me with pure contempt. "You loser. Are you trying to take photos and play the victim?"

I shot her a cold look. "I'm saving them for the police."

She scoffed. "Well, go ahead if you're not afraid of embarrassing yourself!"

I stood up, grabbed my coat, and headed for the door. I didn't want to stay in this suffocating place for another second.

She grabbed my arm with a feral look in her eyes. "I'm not done settling scores with you over Jaxon. Where do you think you're going?"

I wrenched my arm free and impatiently replied, "What do you mean, settle scores? Did he run to you to tattle again?"

Ever since Jaxon Preston joined the company, I'd had to deal with a constant stream of sabotage and slander. To be honest, I had seen it so often that it didn't surprise me anymore.

Sure enough, Hailey started listing my crimes. "All I did was give him a watch. How dare you threaten him? Apologize to him right now, or I'm going to demote you!"

Without waiting for my response, she dialed Jaxon's number and put the call on speaker. I could barely say a word before he started his wounded act.

"I'm the one who should apologize, Ms. Miller. I shouldn't have accepted your gift if it was going to make Mr. Chase so mad. I'll return the watch. Please just tell Mr. Chase to stop targeting me at work."

His acting was so bad that I almost laughed, but Hailey bought it.

She glared at me and snapped, "Who do you think you are, Landon Chase? You're just a technician and don't even call the shots in this company. If you won't stop bullying the employees, believe it or not, I'll send you off to the factory!"

I wasn't intimidated by her threat at all. Instead, I firmly shot back, "Fine! Send me there. Just don't regret it!"

With that, I stormed out and slammed the door, completely ignoring her angry screams behind me.

The next day, I headed to the factory and didn't pick up any of Hailey's calls when she blew up my phone with dozens of them.

Furious, she tagged me in the office group chat. "How dare you skip work? Are you trying to get yourself fired?"

I replied with a photo of the factory and reminded her, "Didn't you send me to the factory, Ms. Miller? You're quite forgetful, aren't you?"

Chaos erupted in the group chat, while executives and shareholders immediately voiced their outrage.

We were in the middle of a critical development phase for a new project, and I was the chief technology officer.

Everything would grind to a halt if I wasn't there to lead, and every day the project was stalled, it cost the company millions of dollars.

Under pressure, Hailey finally softened her attitude. "What I said last night was just my anger talking, so don't take it seriously. You developed this project yourself. We really can't do this without you."

I scoffed. It didn't take long for her to regret what she had done.

The hooligan slapped me hard across the face and spat in a menacing voice, "We just want a little money. Hailey says you're loaded."I shook my head and tried to talk him into letting me go. "Work as my bodyguard, and I'll pay you 150 thousand dollars a year. It's a stable job that's so much better than this dangerous racket."For a second, the hooligan looked tempted. He was about to agree when Hailey jumped in and stirred things up."Don't believe him! He wouldn't even help his ex-wife, so why would he treat a stranger well? Plus, you kidnapped him, so letting him go means you'll end up in prison!"I stared at her in disbelief. "You want me dead, don't you?"She let out a dark, twisted laugh, and her eyes were full of malice. "If I'm suffering, I'm dragging you down with me, too! Why won't you help me when all I'm asking is for a little money to pay off my debts?"Suppressing my disgust and rage, I pretended to stay calm and play along. "How much do you owe?""Just 50 million

I didn't want anything to do with Hailey anymore, so I told my clients to stop making jokes about my past. After all, Julia and I were about to get married, and the last thing I wanted was to make her jealous.I never imagined that Hailey would still be obsessed with me.One day, Julia and I were at a boutique shopping for wedding gowns when Hailey appeared out of nowhere, trying to get my attention. She wore the same wedding gown she had worn at our wedding and dropped to her knees in front of me."I'm sorry, Landon. Could you please forgive me? The three years I spent with you were the happiest days of my life. I know you still love me, so please don't marry Julia, alright? Come back to me!"I shook my head hard and told her to give up on the idea, but she refused. Instead, she clung to my leg and wouldn't let go.My patience finally snapped, and the harsh insults poured out. "How does someone like you have the nerve to come to me again, Hailey? Do you honestly think you're i

Hailey snapped at Jaxon, "You idiot! Can you even handle the project delivery if Landon's gone?"Jaxon didn't know a thing about actual work. The only thing he was good at was hooking up with women, so he just assumed that the partnership with Julia was set in stone. He was desperate to kick me out so I wouldn't steal the credit. After a month of careful preparations, my new company officially launched the following day.Big names in the industry showed up in droves to congratulate me, including Julia. She was our first official partner, and we kicked things off on our first project together.I was in the middle of a high-energy presentation, outlining the future of our project to a cheering crowd, when Hailey and Jaxon burst in, clearly looking for a fight. Hailey started accusing Julia of breaching their contract for canceling the partnership on the day of the project delivery.Julia slapped the official contract down in front of them and firmly said, "Your company failed to m

Julia, the company's biggest client, was the first to terminate all future partnerships.Hailey came to me for help, begging me to change Julia's mind.I took the chance to lay out my terms. "I can help you, but only if you finalize the divorce right now."She couldn't understand why I was so desperate. "It's just a month. Can't you even wait that long?"I pulled up the viral video that had spread across the internet and showed it to her so she could witness her humiliation on full display. "The whole internet knows you cheated. Do you really think I'd be willing to wait?"Hailey had no comeback for that, so we headed to the courthouse and signed the papers that day.The best part about a divorce was the immediate asset division. Over the last three years, while the real estate market boomed, I had encouraged her to invest our dividends into purchasing a dozen properties. They were all under her name because I had completely trusted her, so now, a divorce was the only way I c

"Don't play innocent in front of me, Hailey!" I snapped. "When you were out there cheating, did you ever stop to think about divorce? Or did you just assume that I'd keep putting up with you while you were out there messing around with other men?"My voice rang out loud and clear as I reminded Hailey of all the disgusting things she had done.A flicker of guilt crossed her face, but she stubbornly refused to admit to it. "Jaxon and I are just colleagues. It's not as ugly as you're making it sound."I let out a mocking laugh. "Do you really think I'm an idiot? You don't have to sign the papers because I'll just take it to court."For once, Hailey looked genuinely disappointed. "Does it really have to end with a divorce?"I couldn't bother to respond and turned to leave. A divorce wasn't the only lawsuit I was prepared to file anyway. But she grabbed my arm and said, "I'll sign the papers, only if you secure the deal with Julia."I shrugged. "And what's in it for me? I can proce

Hailey quickly explained, "Landon refuses to follow corporate directives, so I'm assigning someone more responsible to handle your project."Then, she pointed at Jaxon. "This is Mr. Preston, who studied abroad."Jaxon scurried over to suck up to Julia and extended a hand with a sycophantic grin. "A pleasure to meet you, Ms. Morrison. I look forward to working with you."Instead of taking his hand, Julia turned around to give Hailey a look of open disdain. "Isn't he your secretary? Have you lost your mind assigning someone with zero technical background to handle my project? Put Mr. Chase back in charge right now, or this partnership is off!"Jaxon's expression darkened at the humiliation, and he tried to salvage his dignity. "This is an internal company matter, Ms. Morrison. You don't have the right to—""Shut up!" Hailey snapped, cutting him off before he could finish.Julia's patience snapped. "Fine. If this is how you do business, the deal's off."With that, she turned around
