RONAN

“Do you really think it’s Julian?” Jaxon asks. I watch him sit up and lean forward, warm brown eyes laced with confusion as he stares at Malachi, who hasn’t been able to wipe that worried look off his face all day.

I look away from them towards the door. We’re ready to go see our ray of sunshine. She had said the stalker showed up at her house. That—if you ask me—was a huge mistake on their part.

I plan to wait around tonight, just to see if they’ll show up. And when they do…

My hands clench into fists. The keys in my right press hard into the skin of my palm.

“…no one else has a reason to do something like that. He’s the only one I can think of who’ll want to do something like that.”

Only, he’s not.

I’ve been battling with the thought since this afternoon. It doesn’t make any logical sense now, but it’s still a huge possibility.

“It might be Julian,” I say out loud.

Both of my brothers turn towards me.

“Or it could be dad.”

I see it.

The fear that settles in both their e

JAXON He’s a dead man walking. I can almost see it: his blood all over my hands as I make a clean cut across his throat, the life that slowly and very steadily drains from his eyes while he makes terrible wrenching sounds, reaching for his neck, clutching his skin trying to piece it back together. The fear would no doubt paralyze him until he’s gone. No, almost. Uncle has asked for his body and Ronan has given his word. But if Luke harms Sarah in any way, there would be no body to give. I would gut him open like a fish and leave his body to rot in the open, his intestines spilling all over the floor. And I swear to all that I am, I will get it right this time. I will…“Jaxon.” Ronan’s shaky voice calls me out of my thoughts. When I blink, Luke’s lifeless body fades, and I’m back in the surveillance room. His hand gently squeezes my right shoulder blade. Swallowing hard against the lump in my throat, I turn to him.“We’re getting his location. It’s going to take a couple of

SARAH I hear the heavy metal door open—or does it close? It’s impossible to tell with my eyes shut from sheer exhaustion. Even my slow breaths take a lot of energy from me. My tongue feels heavy and dry in my mouth, almost crispy. Most importantly, I smell and feel like shit. The footsteps draw closer and closer. When they finally stop in front of me, the pungent smell of his aftershave fills my nostrils. Someone has taken a shower. Lucky him. This means he doesn’t live too far from here. Did this motherfucker lock me in his fucking garage? That would explain the metal door. “You might want to eat something.” He says, stepping into the light. I know because I can see his shadow with my eyes closed. Weird, I know. In the course of how many hours I’ve been here, I’ve developed different abilities to stop myself from going crazy. I’ve gone from freezing cold, to burning hot. Now, my skin feels an odd mixture of the both, internally and externally. My eyelids part slowly, to reve

RONANIt’s been five years since I’ve seen him. Somehow, that smile is enough to remind me of my mother. She had the same deep brown eyes that brightened or dimmed depending on how she felt. For years after she died, it made me wonder how we had missed the signs. How could we not see she was in pain? How much did she have to go through to hide it from us? Uncle Abel looks away from us and turns to the men behind him who I only just notice. “Would you look at that? My favorite nephews have finally graced me with their presence.” He points at us as his laughter echoes through the dimly lit room. “Today cannot get any better, I tell you.” It’s almost ten pm, but that’s besides the point. I take his gesture as an invitation to come forward. My brothers and Kevin follow me behind. “We’re your only nephews.” I reply with a bold smile of my own. As bold as I can muster. Even as a grown man, his presence still gives me an odd feeling down my spine. He nods, eyes laser focused on no o

MALACHI “I’m sorry we had to keep things away from you. We thought we could start something new, build something different with you. We were fools. We lied to ourselves. I would never be sorry for any life I’ve taken, any man, woman, or child I have brought down to have my way. I am not sorry I trampled on people to have everything I have today. And I would do it again and again to keep everything I’ve built, because that’s how the world works, Sarah Wellspring.Kill or be killed. Hunt or be hunted. You are either predator or prey. We picked a side a long time ago. It’s time for you to do the same.”I raise a brow at him.“What the hell does that even mean?”She takes the words out of my mouth. Really. What is he trying to say? “In six hours, there will be a gun in your hand pointed at the bastard who has you tied up,” His scowl deepens. “We would give you a choice to put a bullet in his throat. You can accept it or refuse it. But no matter what you pick, we would kill him.”“Are y

MALACHI My brother’s jaw clenches. My gaze drops to the phone in his right hand. I watch his fingers wrap tightly around it. A little more pressure, and he might shatter the device into pieces. “Take it back, Sarah.” His shoulders quake as he speaks. With eyes glued on the phone screen, he doesn’t seem to see or care about anything else. “No.”My chest hurts…terribly. I slide my hands into the side pockets of my pants. “You don’t mean that, Sarah. Take it back, please.”She laughs. “I don’t mean it? You’re really looking at me right now, and you think I don’t mean how much I hate you?” Another scoff follows. “I was wrong about you, Ronan. You sure as hell do not know me at all.” “Sarah…”“It’s bad enough that you have a past so…twisted. But I cannot blame you for that. You should have told me…” her voice breaks. “I would have…I would have tried to understand. But you three, all of you, looked me in the eyes and lied to me! Not once, not twice, again and again and again!” She’s

SARAH Confess. To openly admit something or declare something that you’ve been hiding, keeping secret, or feeling guilty about. Turns out what the rest of the world knows—and that includes their psychotic foster father who has been out of touch with the world, their world, for almost twenty fucking years—that I don’t, exists. It is not just a concept I made up in my head. It is not an abstract. It is a thing. It is their history, their truth. Which means they lied. They looked me in the eyes, time and time again, and lied to me. Luke pulls a plastic chair from the darkness and sets it in front of me. There, he settles with his legs crossed and a twisted smile on his face. The bruises from my fingers are all over his forehead and neck. Before he somehow managed to make me unconscious, I was determined to fight him till the very end. I tear my gaze away from Luke, fixing it on the phone screen he’s held out. Jaxon’s face greets me. I see it.The fear and guilt in his eyes. It
