Chapter 2

Smart.

It was the word I had heard more than any other for as long as I could remember.

Blythe was prettier than I was and had a more endearing personality. The only thing I had going for me was being smart. I could read a textbook once and have it memorized. I could glance at a problem and understand it immediately.

Yet my parents had never loved me more for it.

Gary was smart too, and they were proud of him for it. When it came to me, all it ever earned was a weary sigh from Mom.

"What does a girl need to be that smart for? It'd be better if she were more like Blythe. A little slower, a little sweeter. That's what's lovable."

Eventually, that line became everyone's justification for playing favorites. They all said I was smart and could take care of myself, so the best food went to Blythe first. The new dresses went to Blythe first. Even our parents' affection went to Blythe first.

The same quality that made Gary someone to be proud of had become, in my case, the very reason I did not deserve to be loved.

Then, I met Callum, who was one year ahead of me at school.

Back then, he had not met Blythe yet. When I told him all of this, he just frowned and said, "Being loved more because you're slow? What kind of logic is that? Darcy, being smart isn't something to be sorry for."

Later, he met Blythe too. More than once after that, I caught him laughing in spite of himself. "Your sister isn't the sharpest, but she's kind of cute."

I still liked Callum though, because he was the first person who ever told me that being smart was not a fault. Now, however, even he was saying the same thing as the rest of them.

The living room went quiet for a moment. Gary was the first to lose patience, rapping his knuckles against the coffee table.

"Darcy, say something already. Mom and Dad are doing this for the family. It's not like they're trying to hurt you."

I kept my eyes down, my throat blocked by something I could not swallow down. After a long silence, I managed a quiet "Okay."

Everyone finally relaxed. As if on cue, they each produced a bag from behind them.

"Come on, don't look so miserable. These are your graduation gifts. Blythe got hers, and you're getting yours, so don't go saying we play favorites."

I looked at the four gifts in front of me, and the sting behind my eyes only got worse. What were these supposed to be? They first hurt me, then handed me consolation prizes?

Besides, I had seen it all clearly just minutes ago. The gifts in front of Blythe had been the newest phone, a laptop, a limited-edition bag, and concert tickets she had been wanting for months.

What they handed me was a fountain pen, a book, a plain canvas tote, and a dress with the price tag already cut off.

I took the gifts and stood up to leave.

"Darcy." Mom stopped me, hesitating before she asked, "Do you want to stay for dinner?"

I lowered my head with a bitter smile. This was supposed to be my home too, but even having a meal here was something I had to be invited to 'stay' for.

I swallowed past the lump in my throat and shook my head. "No, I'm fine."

Once I was out the door, I threw all four gifts into the garbage bin by the building entrance.

On the bus ride back, I scrolled past a new social media post from Blythe.

[The annoying one finally left. Now, we can actually enjoy dinner.]

The photo showed my parents, Gary, and Callum sitting around the dining table, which was loaded with crab, shrimp, oysters, and five other dishes. Everything was seafood, which would send me into a severe allergic reaction.

At that moment, I was almost glad I had not stayed. If I had, the only thing I would have been able to eat from that entire table was plain pasta.

Back at the apartment, I started packing. In the living room, I turned the plush dolls around to face the wall, like children being made to stand in the corner.

At the most visible spot on my desk was a postcard pinned under a book. Callum had given it to me before he even knew Blythe existed. It showed the lake on Stratton's campus, and in the bottom corner was his messy handwriting.

'Darcy, I'll be waiting for you at Stratton.'

I looked at it for two seconds, pulled it out, and tore it in half.

Three days after Callum left Dunmore, the Sheridan family was all over the news.It started with the television interview that never aired. Someone found it strange that the top scorer in the entire state had disappeared and her own family had no idea where she had gone. Then, the neighbors from the apartment complex spoke up. One of them told reporters that a young girl had lived there alone for a full year. Her air conditioner was broken and nobody came to fix it. When the power went out at night, she could only crouch in the hallway and cry.Someone else dug up what the milkshake shop owner had to say, that the top scorer's mother had taken her daughter's entire month of wages and replaced them with counterfeit bills. The headlines were brutal.[State's top scorer forced out of family home, lived alone for a year before cutting contact.][Younger sister's university acceptance was celebrated by the whole family while her older sister, the top scorer, left in silence.]I saw t

Half a month later, Callum finally tracked me down and came to Dunmore.I had just walked out of the library that day when I looked down and saw him standing at the bottom of the steps. He had lost weight, and the shadows under his eyes were deep and dark. The moment he saw me, the tension in his body seemed to release all at once."Darcy." He crossed the distance quickly, his voice rough. "I've been looking everywhere for you."I stopped walking but did not run toward him the way I used to. I just looked at him, calm. "What do you need?"Callum faltered. He probably had not expected me to speak to him like that. The old version of me could be furious one second and still soften her voice for him the next.He tightened his grip on what he was holding and said quietly, "Darcy, I was wrong. You should've gone to Stratton."He held out the postcard. It was the same one, but it had been taped back together. The creases were still deep. The strip of tape ran straight across the middle

After the reporter left, the Sheridans' living room was so quiet that it was suffocating.Blythe's acceptance letter still sat open on the coffee table. Minutes ago, everyone had been gathered around it, laughing. Now, no one so much as glanced at it.Dad was the first to snap out of it. He grabbed his car keys and headed for the door. "We're going to the school. I want to know exactly where she applied to."Mom hurried after him, her steps unsteady. Gary and Callum went too.Only Blythe stayed behind on the couch, her face drained of color. She wanted to call after them, but nothing came out when she opened her mouth. The school was already on break. The only person left in the office was my homeroom teacher, Marion Gale. When she saw all of them walk in together, she did not look surprised. It was as if she had always known this day would come.Mom rushed up to her. "Where did Darcy go? Did she deliberately keep this from us?"Ms. Gale looked at her for a long time before she

The day I arrived in Dunmore, it was raining lightly. It was crowded outside the station. As I pulled my suitcase toward the exit, the wheels traced wet lines across the ground with a quiet hiss.No one was there to pick me up. No one stood in the crowd calling my name. However, I was not sad at all.For years, I had always been waiting for Mom and Dad to turn around and look at me, for Gary to say one kind thing, and for Callum to remember that he had once promised to wait for me too.It was only after I stopped waiting that I realized how much lighter everything felt. When I powered on my phone, the screen flooded with over a dozen missed calls from Mom, Dad, Gary, and Callum. I looked at them for a while, my fingertip resting on the screen. If this had been before, I would have called back immediately, despite the fact that I knew that whatever waited on the other end was most likely blame. This time, however, I swiped every notification away and switched the phone back to sile

Several people stood outside the door. The woman in front held a microphone, and behind her were crew members carrying camera equipment.Mom blinked. "Can I help you?"The woman smiled. "Hello, we're from the city's television station. We're here to interview Darcy Sheridan. Is she home?"The expression on Mom's face locked in place. Everyone in the living room turned to look.Dad frowned. "You want to interview Darcy? What for?"The woman seemed caught off guard, as if she had not expected that reaction. "You don't know? Darcy scored the highest in the entire state this year. She got a perfect score. We contacted her school, and they said she'd already left, so we came here instead."The living room went completely silent. The hair clip slipped from Blythe's fingers and hit the floor with a small clack.Mom opened her mouth, but nothing came out for a long time.A perfect score. The top student in the state. Those words landed like two sharp slaps across every face in the ro

At that moment, the Sheridans' living room was buzzing.Blythe's acceptance letter sat in the center of the coffee table. Mom had read it over and over, barely able to contain the smile in her eyes. "Our Blythe really came through. This whole year was worth it."Dad was smiling too, which was rare for him. He scrolled through hotel options on his phone. "Since both girls got into university, let's make the celebratory dinner a proper event. We'll invite all our relatives and friends, give everyone something to be happy about."Gary sat nearby, texting his classmates. "I already checked. The ballroom at Aston Hotel is pretty nice, but the timing's a little tight."Callum was there too. He held his phone with his thumb hovering over the group chat conversation. The last message was the one he had sent.[I'll come pick you up.]There was no reply. He frowned and was about to send another message when a notification from the family group chat appeared at the top of his screen.[D
