Chapter 1

It was almost dawn when Mom finally sent a single message.

[Stop calling. Blythe gets upset just seeing your number come up.]

After that, I made four little dolls in their likenesses. They kept me company at meals and at bedtime. They listened when I talked about every small improvement, and they listened when I needed to say the sad things I had no one else to tell.

Yet as the tears fell now, I did not reach for them. After walking alone in the dark for so long, I had finally found the courage to stop looking back.

I stood there and looked around the apartment properly for the first time in the year I had lived there. The paint was peeling in patches, exposing the pale gray concrete underneath.

The curtains had been washed so many times that they had gone stiff, and the edges still carried mildew stains that would not come out. The old air conditioner overhead rattled and hummed, but the only thing it blew out was warm air.

During the hottest months of exam prep, I sat at the desk and worked through practice tests every day. By the time I finished a single paper, I would have sweated enough to need two showers.

However, the Sheridan family was not poor.

My parents, Gary, and Blythe all lived in a sprawling apartment in the city center that was well over 3,000 square feet. Blythe had her own study and her own music room. Even her collectibles and merchandise had a room of their own.

When they sent me away, Mom had only frowned and said, "It's just a year at most. There's no need to rent anything too nice. Once your exams are over, we'll bring you home."

Yet more than two weeks had passed between the last exam and today's results, and not a single one of them had mentioned bringing me home.

I lowered my eyes and was about to put the four dolls away when a message from Mom came through.

[Darcy, come home later. We need to talk about your college applications.]

I stared at those words, feeling my heart stir despite myself. Maybe they still remembered me, after all.

I rushed downstairs without a second thought. Taking the bus would take too long, so for the first time, I let myself splurge and called a cab.

When I pushed the front door open, the living room was full of voices and laughter. My parents were there, and so were Gary and Callum Ward. Blythe sat in the middle of them all with four beautifully wrapped gifts laid out in front of her.

Mom stroked her hair, her voice impossibly gentle. "You did so well this time, sweetheart. Our Blythe scored high enough for schools in Kingsgate too."

Gary laughed. "She's coming to Lockwood, obviously. I'm the one who tutored her in math. Do you know how much time I put in this past year? If she doesn't end up at my school, that's just wrong."

Callum frowned. "No way. I'm the one who pulled her literature grade up. If she's going anywhere, it should be Stratton."

The two of them argued like they were fighting over the most precious thing in the world, and neither would give an inch.

I stood in the entryway like a thief who had wandered into the wrong house. It took a long time before Mom finally noticed me. The smile on her face faded a little. "Oh, Darcy. You're here."

The laughter in the living room stopped dead.

Blythe shot me a cold look, gathered the gifts into her arms, and turned back to her room.

The rest of them just looked at me, uncomfortable. Gary was the first to speak. "What are you standing there for? Come sit down."

I walked over in silence and sat down on the armchair at the far edge.

Dad cleared his throat. "Did your results come in?"

I nodded. "Yeah."

"What did you get?"

I was about to answer when Mom cut in, "Let's not talk about scores right now. That's not what matters."

She avoided my eyes, looking a little guilty. "The reason I asked you to come home is to talk about where you're applying. Don't apply to any schools in Kingsgate. Blythe spent an entire year catching up just to get where she is now. If you end up in the same city, she'll probably have another breakdown."

My fingernails dug slowly into my palms. The pain crept up, dull and distant.

They knew perfectly well that the best universities in the country were in Kingsgate, but for the sake of sparing Blythe even the possibility of unhappiness, they wanted to throw away my future without a second thought.

I turned to Dad, still unwilling to give up. His face said it all.

"Just listen to your mother. Things have finally settled down at home. Don't stir everything up again."

I looked at Gary. He frowned, his tone matter-of-fact. "Crestfield has plenty of good schools. Just go there. It's closer to home."

Finally, I looked at Callum. He kept his eyes down, unable to look at me. It was a long time before he spoke, his voice low. "Darcy, you've always been smart. You'll do well no matter where you go. But Blythe is different. She needs people looking after her."

Three days after Callum left Dunmore, the Sheridan family was all over the news.It started with the television interview that never aired. Someone found it strange that the top scorer in the entire state had disappeared and her own family had no idea where she had gone. Then, the neighbors from the apartment complex spoke up. One of them told reporters that a young girl had lived there alone for a full year. Her air conditioner was broken and nobody came to fix it. When the power went out at night, she could only crouch in the hallway and cry.Someone else dug up what the milkshake shop owner had to say, that the top scorer's mother had taken her daughter's entire month of wages and replaced them with counterfeit bills. The headlines were brutal.[State's top scorer forced out of family home, lived alone for a year before cutting contact.][Younger sister's university acceptance was celebrated by the whole family while her older sister, the top scorer, left in silence.]I saw t

Half a month later, Callum finally tracked me down and came to Dunmore.I had just walked out of the library that day when I looked down and saw him standing at the bottom of the steps. He had lost weight, and the shadows under his eyes were deep and dark. The moment he saw me, the tension in his body seemed to release all at once."Darcy." He crossed the distance quickly, his voice rough. "I've been looking everywhere for you."I stopped walking but did not run toward him the way I used to. I just looked at him, calm. "What do you need?"Callum faltered. He probably had not expected me to speak to him like that. The old version of me could be furious one second and still soften her voice for him the next.He tightened his grip on what he was holding and said quietly, "Darcy, I was wrong. You should've gone to Stratton."He held out the postcard. It was the same one, but it had been taped back together. The creases were still deep. The strip of tape ran straight across the middle

After the reporter left, the Sheridans' living room was so quiet that it was suffocating.Blythe's acceptance letter still sat open on the coffee table. Minutes ago, everyone had been gathered around it, laughing. Now, no one so much as glanced at it.Dad was the first to snap out of it. He grabbed his car keys and headed for the door. "We're going to the school. I want to know exactly where she applied to."Mom hurried after him, her steps unsteady. Gary and Callum went too.Only Blythe stayed behind on the couch, her face drained of color. She wanted to call after them, but nothing came out when she opened her mouth. The school was already on break. The only person left in the office was my homeroom teacher, Marion Gale. When she saw all of them walk in together, she did not look surprised. It was as if she had always known this day would come.Mom rushed up to her. "Where did Darcy go? Did she deliberately keep this from us?"Ms. Gale looked at her for a long time before she

The day I arrived in Dunmore, it was raining lightly. It was crowded outside the station. As I pulled my suitcase toward the exit, the wheels traced wet lines across the ground with a quiet hiss.No one was there to pick me up. No one stood in the crowd calling my name. However, I was not sad at all.For years, I had always been waiting for Mom and Dad to turn around and look at me, for Gary to say one kind thing, and for Callum to remember that he had once promised to wait for me too.It was only after I stopped waiting that I realized how much lighter everything felt. When I powered on my phone, the screen flooded with over a dozen missed calls from Mom, Dad, Gary, and Callum. I looked at them for a while, my fingertip resting on the screen. If this had been before, I would have called back immediately, despite the fact that I knew that whatever waited on the other end was most likely blame. This time, however, I swiped every notification away and switched the phone back to sile

Several people stood outside the door. The woman in front held a microphone, and behind her were crew members carrying camera equipment.Mom blinked. "Can I help you?"The woman smiled. "Hello, we're from the city's television station. We're here to interview Darcy Sheridan. Is she home?"The expression on Mom's face locked in place. Everyone in the living room turned to look.Dad frowned. "You want to interview Darcy? What for?"The woman seemed caught off guard, as if she had not expected that reaction. "You don't know? Darcy scored the highest in the entire state this year. She got a perfect score. We contacted her school, and they said she'd already left, so we came here instead."The living room went completely silent. The hair clip slipped from Blythe's fingers and hit the floor with a small clack.Mom opened her mouth, but nothing came out for a long time.A perfect score. At that moment, the Sheridans' living room was buzzing.Blythe's acceptance letter sat in the center of the coffee table. Mom had read it over and over, barely able to contain the smile in her eyes. "Our Blythe really came through. This whole year was worth it."Dad was smiling too, which was rare for him. He scrolled through hotel options on his phone. "Since both girls got into university, let's make the celebratory dinner a proper event. We'll invite all our relatives and friends, give everyone something to be happy about."Gary sat nearby, texting his classmates. "I already checked. The ballroom at Aston Hotel is pretty nice, but the timing's a little tight."Callum was there too. He held his phone with his thumb hovering over the group chat conversation. The last message was the one he had sent.[I'll come pick you up.]There was no reply. He frowned and was about to send another message when a notification from the family group chat appeared at the top of his screen.[D
