Chapter 4

Autor: Fortune Paws
For a moment, I thought the vendor was trying to scam me. However, he slapped the bills down on the counter, and a crowd gathered fast. Someone held them up to the light. Someone else rubbed the paper between their fingers. They all shook their heads.

"They're fake."

That night, I sat outside the mall entrance with a stack of counterfeit bills in my arms and did not move until morning.

The moment the milkshake shop opened the next day, I stormed in and threw the money on the counter. "You paid me with counterfeit money? This is fraud. I'm calling the police."

The owner did not look worried at all. "I didn't put that money together. Your mother came in yesterday and collected your pay before you did. She left me these to give you instead. She said it was to teach you a lesson, to make you understand that earning money isn't easy."

My head rang like a bell had gone off inside it.

I rode the bus home with numb hands and feet. The second I walked through the door, I looked at her with red-rimmed eyes. "Did you take my paycheck?"

Mom did not look guilty in the slightest. If anything, she looked pleased with herself.

"Now you know money doesn't come easy, don't you? Remember, your parents are the ones who are always going to be there for you. When something goes wrong, the first thing you should do is come home to your family. Or go to Callum. That works too."

I was shaking all over, and the tears would not stop.

It was not as if I had never tried.

When I was followed home by a group of thugs, I hid inside a convenience store and called them in a panic.

Dad only said, "Why would they follow you and nobody else? What did you do?"

When the air conditioner in the apartment only blew hot air and I could not sleep through the heat, I begged them to replace it. Mom said, "Don't be so delicate. If you can't handle a little discomfort, how are you ever going to amount to anything?"

The week before exams, I came down with a fever of 103 and called Gary in a haze. All he said was, "Blythe's in a bad mood today. Just take some medicine and stop being so dramatic."

Another time, the power went out in the middle of the night. I pressed myself into the corner of the wall and sent Callum dozens of messages. He did not reply for a long time.

When he did, it was: [Lock the door. I'm tutoring Blythe tonight. Stop messaging me.]

Every single time I needed them, where had any of them been?

I could not hold it in anymore. "Give me my money back! That's my paycheck! I earned it myself!"

Dad's expression went dark. He crossed the room in two strides, grabbed me by the arm, and shoved me toward the door.

"All you ever care about is money! That's all you ever talk about when you come home! Do you have any idea how much we've spent raising you? Forget 300 dollars. We've spent ten times that and more!

"I used to think you were smart, but now, I see you're just calculating. All you see is dollar signs!"

The door slammed shut in my face.

I turned around with tears streaming down my cheeks. The elevator doors opened right then, and Gary, Callum, and Blythe stepped out together.

Blythe held up a small hair clip between her fingers, wrinkling her nose. "Something this tiny costs 300 dollars?"

Gary laughed. "If you like it, it's worth every cent. Even 3,000 dollars wouldn't be too much."

Callum added gently, "Didn't your mom just give you 50,000 dollars as a reward? She gave it to you so that you'd spend it. Don't hold back."

I stood in the shadows, and the tears fell harder.

I woke up before dawn every morning. I stood under the blazing sun for eight hours a day in that mascot suit. The 300 dollars I earned for an entire month of that was how much Blythe had spent on a single hair clip without thinking twice.

I did not want them to see me like this. I fled down the emergency stairwell, and by the time I reached the ground floor, my tears had finally run dry.

After my exam results came out, a few parents tracked me down and asked me to tutor their children. I agreed, but I had one request. "Can you pay me by bank transfer?"

They seemed puzzled, but they said yes.

After that blowup, my parents, Gary, and Callum all seemed to have silently agreed not to reach out to me. I did not reach out either.

I stopped being sad about it. I just prepared my lessons, taught my students, and saved my money, day after day.

The day my acceptance letter arrived, I cooked two dishes for myself. Then, for the first time in a while, I took the four little dolls back out and set them across the table from me, the way I used to.

"Let's call this my farewell party before I start university," I said to them. "It'll be the last meal we share."

I looked into their round, stitched eyes and smiled softly. "You don't have to keep me company anymore. From here on out, I'll walk the rest of the way on my own."

After dinner, I cleaned the apartment until it was spotless. Then, I pulled my suitcase behind me and left the place I had been living in alone for an entire year.

I did not go to Kingsgate, but I did not go to Crestfield, which was where they had planned for me, either.

Instead, I went further south, to Halford University.

Just before the train pulled out of the station, a message popped up in the family group chat that had been silent for weeks. Mom had sent a photo of Blythe's acceptance letter.

[Blythe got into a school in Kingsgate! Darcy, you got your Crestfield letter too, right? Let's find a time to have a celebratory dinner together.]

Gary followed up right away: [Stop sulking already. The whole family needs to be there.]

Then, Callum sent: [I'll come pick you up.]

I stared at the messages for a long time. I did not reply. I left the group chat.

Outside the window, the platform began to slide slowly backward. I turned off my phone and leaned back in my seat.

From here, the road stretched on for a thousand miles, and I would not be turning back.

Three days after Callum left Dunmore, the Sheridan family was all over the news.It started with the television interview that never aired. Someone found it strange that the top scorer in the entire state had disappeared and her own family had no idea where she had gone. Then, the neighbors from the apartment complex spoke up. One of them told reporters that a young girl had lived there alone for a full year. Her air conditioner was broken and nobody came to fix it. When the power went out at night, she could only crouch in the hallway and cry.Someone else dug up what the milkshake shop owner had to say, that the top scorer's mother had taken her daughter's entire month of wages and replaced them with counterfeit bills. The headlines were brutal.[State's top scorer forced out of family home, lived alone for a year before cutting contact.][Younger sister's university acceptance was celebrated by the whole family while her older sister, the top scorer, left in silence.]I saw t

Half a month later, Callum finally tracked me down and came to Dunmore.I had just walked out of the library that day when I looked down and saw him standing at the bottom of the steps. He had lost weight, and the shadows under his eyes were deep and dark. The moment he saw me, the tension in his body seemed to release all at once."Darcy." He crossed the distance quickly, his voice rough. "I've been looking everywhere for you."I stopped walking but did not run toward him the way I used to. I just looked at him, calm. "What do you need?"Callum faltered. He probably had not expected me to speak to him like that. The old version of me could be furious one second and still soften her voice for him the next.He tightened his grip on what he was holding and said quietly, "Darcy, I was wrong. You should've gone to Stratton."He held out the postcard. It was the same one, but it had been taped back together. The creases were still deep. The strip of tape ran straight across the middle

After the reporter left, the Sheridans' living room was so quiet that it was suffocating.Blythe's acceptance letter still sat open on the coffee table. Minutes ago, everyone had been gathered around it, laughing. Now, no one so much as glanced at it.Dad was the first to snap out of it. He grabbed his car keys and headed for the door. "We're going to the school. I want to know exactly where she applied to."Mom hurried after him, her steps unsteady. Gary and Callum went too.Only Blythe stayed behind on the couch, her face drained of color. She wanted to call after them, but nothing came out when she opened her mouth. The school was already on break. The only person left in the office was my homeroom teacher, Marion Gale. When she saw all of them walk in together, she did not look surprised. It was as if she had always known this day would come.Mom rushed up to her. "Where did Darcy go? Did she deliberately keep this from us?"Ms. Gale looked at her for a long time before she

The day I arrived in Dunmore, it was raining lightly. It was crowded outside the station. As I pulled my suitcase toward the exit, the wheels traced wet lines across the ground with a quiet hiss.No one was there to pick me up. No one stood in the crowd calling my name. However, I was not sad at all.For years, I had always been waiting for Mom and Dad to turn around and look at me, for Gary to say one kind thing, and for Callum to remember that he had once promised to wait for me too.It was only after I stopped waiting that I realized how much lighter everything felt. When I powered on my phone, the screen flooded with over a dozen missed calls from Mom, Dad, Gary, and Callum. I looked at them for a while, my fingertip resting on the screen. If this had been before, I would have called back immediately, despite the fact that I knew that whatever waited on the other end was most likely blame. This time, however, I swiped every notification away and switched the phone back to sile

Several people stood outside the door. The woman in front held a microphone, and behind her were crew members carrying camera equipment.Mom blinked. "Can I help you?"The woman smiled. "Hello, we're from the city's television station. We're here to interview Darcy Sheridan. Is she home?"The expression on Mom's face locked in place. Everyone in the living room turned to look.Dad frowned. "You want to interview Darcy? What for?"The woman seemed caught off guard, as if she had not expected that reaction. "You don't know? Darcy scored the highest in the entire state this year. She got a perfect score. We contacted her school, and they said she'd already left, so we came here instead."The living room went completely silent. The hair clip slipped from Blythe's fingers and hit the floor with a small clack.Mom opened her mouth, but nothing came out for a long time.A perfect score. At that moment, the Sheridans' living room was buzzing.Blythe's acceptance letter sat in the center of the coffee table. Mom had read it over and over, barely able to contain the smile in her eyes. "Our Blythe really came through. This whole year was worth it."Dad was smiling too, which was rare for him. He scrolled through hotel options on his phone. "Since both girls got into university, let's make the celebratory dinner a proper event. We'll invite all our relatives and friends, give everyone something to be happy about."Gary sat nearby, texting his classmates. "I already checked. The ballroom at Aston Hotel is pretty nice, but the timing's a little tight."Callum was there too. He held his phone with his thumb hovering over the group chat conversation. The last message was the one he had sent.[I'll come pick you up.]There was no reply. He frowned and was about to send another message when a notification from the family group chat appeared at the top of his screen.[D
