Noah leaned forward, his eyes intense. "You're not dangerous. You're scared and confused and you didn't ask for any of this."

"You don't know that. What if I hurt someone? What if I can't control it?"

"Then I'll help you learn to control it."

"Noah—"

"I'm not letting them kill you, Yuna." His voice was low, fierce. "I don't care what my father says. I don't care what I was taught. You're not a monster."

The conviction in his voice made Yuna's chest ache. He believed it. He actually believed she was worth saving.

"The mate bond," Yuna said quietly. "Is that why you're doing this? Because of what you feel?"

Noah's jaw tightened. "I'm doing this because it's right."

"But the bond—"

"Complicates things. Yes." Noah stood abruptly, pacing. "But that's not why I'm helping you. I'm helping you because you deserve to live, Yuna. Bond or no bond."

Yuna stood too, closing the distance between them. "Your father will kill you if he finds out."

"Let me worry about my father."

"I'm serious, Noah. I can't let you throw away your entire life for me."

"It's my life to throw away."

They stood inches apart, the tension crackling between them. Yuna could feel her heart racing, could feel the pull of the bond drawing her closer.

Noah's phone buzzed, shattering the moment. He pulled it out and cursed under his breath.

"What is it?"

"My father. He wants me home now for patrol training." Noah looked at her, conflict written all over his face. "Will you be okay getting back to your dorm?"

"I'll be fine."

Noah hesitated, then pressed the modified charm into her palm. "Wear this tomorrow. Don't let anyone see you put it on. Just slip it under your shirt before the distribution."

"Okay."

"And Yuna?" Noah's expression was serious. "Stay away from Megan. Whatever she's planning, don't give her ammunition."

"I'll try."

Noah left first, disappearing down the stairs. Yuna waited a few minutes before following, clutching the charm so tightly it left marks on her palm.

When she got back to the dorm, Camille was waiting up, sitting cross legged on her bed with a bag of chips.

"Okay, now you really need to tell me what's going on," Camille said. "And I'm not taking 'nothing' for an answer."

Yuna sat on her own bed, exhausted. "I don't even know where to start."

"Start with Noah Phillips. Since when are you two holding hands and meeting in secret?"

"It's complicated."

"Everything is complicated with you lately." Camille's expression softened. "Yuna, you're my best friend. I know when you're hiding something. Please, just talk to me."

Yuna wanted to tell her. Desperately. But how could she explain any of this without sounding insane?

"Noah's just been helping me deal with everything," Yuna said carefully. "After the Christopher thing. He's been really kind."

"Kind?" Camille raised an eyebrow. "The Noah Phillips I know doesn't do kind. He barely talks to anyone outside of basketball."

"Maybe you don't know him as well as you think."

Camille studied her for a long moment. "You like him."

"What? No, I—"

"You do. Oh my God, you actually like him." Camille's eyes went wide. "Does he like you back? Is that what the hand holding was about?"

"Camille, please—"

"This is huge! Noah Phillips, the most eligible guy on campus, and you! How did this even happen?"

"Nothing's happening," Yuna insisted, but she could feel her cheeks burning. "We're just friends."

"Friends who hold hands and meet in secret libraries. Sure."

A loud bang echoed from somewhere downstairs, followed by shouting. Both girls jumped.

"What was that?" Yuna whispered.

They crept to the door and opened it. Other students were poking their heads out of their rooms, looking confused and alarmed.

More shouting. Then a scream.

"Everyone stay in your rooms!" A voice bellowed from downstairs. Coach Sullivan.

Camille and Yuna exchanged terrified looks.

"Do you think it's the kitsune?" Camille breathed.

Before Yuna could answer, footsteps thundered up the stairs. Andrew Phillips appeared, flanked by two other hunters, all of them armed with silver weapons.

"Nobody leaves their rooms," Andrew ordered. "We're doing a sweep of the building."

His eyes landed on Yuna, and for one horrible moment, she was certain he knew. Certain he could somehow see through her skin to the fox spirit underneath.

But then he moved on, barking orders to his team.

Camille pulled Yuna back inside and locked the door.

"This is insane," Camille whispered. "Do you think they found something?"

Yuna clutched the modified charm in her pocket, her hands shaking.

"I don't know."

Blood from her cut hand soaked into his jacket. The wind tore at her hair as they raced through the streets at breakneck speed."Where are we going?" she shouted over the engine noise."Somewhere they won't find us!"Noah took them through a maze of backstreets, his knowledge of the city impressive. Behind them, Camille's car stayed close, the SUVs gradually falling back, unable to keep up with the motorcycle's maneuverability. After twenty minutes of weaving through traffic and side roads, Noah finally slowed. They were in an industrial area, all warehouses and abandoned factories. He pulled into a loading dock and killed the engine.Camille's car screeched to a halt beside them. She jumped out, her face streaked with tears."Is ever

"Fall back! Fall back!"Silver bullets tore through the air as Julia lunged at the hunters, her nine tails whipping like razors. One hunter went down screaming, clutching his shredded arm. Another dove behind a tree as white fire erupted from Julia's mouth.Yuna ran toward Camille, who was pressed against the bushes, eyes wide with terror. She grabbed her friend's hand and pulled her up."We have to go!""What about Julia?" Camille gasped."She told us to run!"They sprinted toward the tree line as chaos exploded behind them. More hunters poured from the buildings, their weapons glinting. Andrew Phillips barked orders, his voice cutting through the mayhem."Containment formation! Don't let either one escape!"Yuna's chest burned as the dual charms fought harder, feeding off her panic. Her vision blurred at the edges, and she stumbled over a root."Keep moving!" Camille pulled her forward. They crashed through the woods, branches tearing at their clothes. Behind them, Julia's howl pier

"That's a trap," Camille said immediately. "You can't go.""What if it's really someone who can help?""Or it's someone trying to catch you. Yuna, this is exactly what Andrew Phillips warned about. Kitsunes are cunning. They trick people.""But I'm a kitsune. Why would another kitsune trap me?""I don't know, but I don't like this."Yuna stared at the message. Every instinct screamed danger. But what choice did she have? Christopher's fake transformation would only buy her a few hours at most. She needed answers. Needed help."I'm going," she said."Then I'm coming with you.""The message said come alone.""I don't care what the message said. You're not meeting some mysterious stranger by yourself."They argued for ten more minutes before Yuna finally gave in. They would go together, but Camille would stay hidden nearby, just in case. The old greenhouse sat at the very edge of campus, overgrown with weeds and vines. The glass panels were cracked and dirty, and the door hung crooked on

"Seal the exits! Nobody leaves!"Andrew's voice boomed through the cafeteria as Christopher crashed through the emergency door, white fur still spreading across his skin. Hunters poured in from every direction, their boots thundering against tile.Yuna stood frozen, her mind reeling. This didn't make sense. Christopher wasn't a kitsune. He couldn't be."Move," Noah hissed, grabbing her arm. "We need to get out of here before they lock down the whole building."But Yuna couldn't move. Couldn't think. Because she had seen something in that brief moment before Christopher fled. Something nobody else would have noticed. The white fur wasn't real.It shimmered at the edges, flickering like a bad hologram. Like an illusion."Yuna!" Camille pulled at her other arm. "We have to go!"They pushed through the panicking crowd toward the side exit. Hunters were everywhere, shouting orders, trying to organize a pursuit. In the chaos, nobody noticed three students slipping away. They made it outside

Camille laughed in disbelief."That's not funny, Yuna.""I'm not joking."The laughter died. Camille looked between Yuna and Noah, her expression shifting from amusement to confusion to dawning horror."You're serious.""Yes.""You're the kitsune." Camille's voice came out barely above a whisper. "The creature everyone's terrified of. The thing the hunters are trying to kill. That's you."Yuna nodded, unable to speak past the lump in her throat.Camille took a step back, her hand flying to her mouth. "Oh my God. Oh my God, Yuna, do you have any idea how insane that sounds?""I know.""No, you don't." Camille was starting to hyperventilate. "They're hunting you. Andrew Phillips, the chief hunter, is hunting you. And you're just standing here in a bathroom like this is normal?""Camille, please—""Don't." Camille held up a hand. "I need a minute. I need to think."She paced the small space, her breathing ragged. Noah stood silently by the door, watching her carefully. Probably calculati

"You need to forget what you heard."Yuna's voice came out harder than she intended, but panic was clawing at her throat. Christopher stood in the shadows of the alcove, arms crossed, studying her with an expression she couldn't read."Kind of difficult to forget," Christopher said. "Noah Phillips breaking into his own father's office? You being hunted? What exactly are you two involved in?""Nothing that concerns you.""Doesn't it?" Christopher stepped closer. "I heard what Megan said to you on the stairs. I heard everything, Yuna. About you and Noah. About the bracelet they took."Yuna's blood ran cold. "You were following me?""I told you Megan was planning something. I wanted to make sure she didn't try anything stupid." Christopher's jaw tightened. "But now I'm wondering if I should be more worried about you than her.""I haven't done anything wrong.""Then why does Noah need to steal evidence from the chief hunter?"Yuna said nothing. What could she possibly say that wouldn't ma
