LOGINMeghan:
The atmosphere laced with awkwardness with silence sprinkled from every corner. I watched as my mother and Aunt Carol stared at each other with a gaze, communicating something only the both of them could understand.
Aunt Carol looked at both Uncle Alex and my mom and gave her a nod. My breath grew heavy, and I could tell it was something that was deliberately hidden from me.
Uncle Alex's face was still with no expression and emotions running on his face. Since he couldn't see what was happening, I assumed he was oblivious to the situation.
But something felt different, I could feel the instant detachment from him.
Since we have fucked a lot over the past few days, I could tell whenever he suddenly goes rigid, and this is for sure one of those times.
“Someone needs to start talking right now. Who are these people? Who are…” I stammered, trying to form my words with my face twisted in confusion.
“This is Uncle Alex. But who are these other two? They look exactly like him. Mom!” I yelled, and my mom quickly stood up from her chair and reached out for the photograph in my hands.
She snatched the photograph from my shaky hands with her body trembling as well. She didn't dare to meet my eyes, so she looked away frantically.
“I have no idea how this got here. It must have been some mistake, I didn't…” My mother panicked with her hand on her chest.
“I do not think that's important now, Mom. What about you start by answering my question.” I glared at her, and she shook her head.
“It is not my story to tell.” She staggered back from me with her fingers pinned on the photograph.
“What the fuck is that even supposed to mean? Your brother and two other men who look exactly like him are in that photograph. And it's not your story to tell. It was found in your house anyway!” I yelled out in frustration.
“Mind your words, young lady.” My mother shot at me, and my eyes stung with tears.
“Yeah, right!” I scoffed and walked up to Aunt Carol.
“Do you have something you want to say to me, Aunty?” I asked her, and she cleared her throat.
“Darling!” She sighed, and I knew for sure, I wasn't going to like whatever she had to say.
“Somethings are better left unsaid. It's better you pretend like you didn't see that. Besides, we are your family. We are the only ones you need. Don't look too far.” She sounded so poetic that I thought I was going to puke.
I rolled my eyes and shifted my gaze towards Alex. He couldn't see me, but he definitely felt my eyes on him as he adjusted and tilted his head away.
“Uncle Alex! Who are these other men? They look just like you. Are they your brothers?” I asked, and even though I already knew the answer, I just wanted to hear someone confess it.
“Meghan…” his voice was hoarse, and tears trickled down my eyes. That was all the confirmation that I needed.
He didn't deny it, but he didn't want to say it either.
“So you are like what! Triplets?” I scoffed and turned to my mom, who looked like she had just seen a ghost.
“It's already bad enough that he here showed up in my life when I was already fifteen. All of a sudden, I find out that I have two other uncles, God knows where!” I threw my hands up in frustration.
“Tell me, mom. How many more uncles or aunts are you keeping away from me?” I sneered.
“Is there a grandpa and a grandma I need to know of. You might want to say something now, so I don't meet them on the road and get the shock of my life.” I gritted my teeth at her.
“If I only I had known about Alex since I was little. Then I wouldn't…” My breath hitched in my throat with more tears flowing down my cheek.
Anger….Pain…Confusion
So many raw emotions reeled through me as I felt the stung of betrayal hitting me like a wave. Maybe I would never have been attracted to my uncle if I had known about him earlier.
I wouldn't have these doomed and cursed desires eating me up every freaking time. Now, what am I supposed to do? Fuck my other two uncles.
I felt so disgusted at the thought and quickly grabbed my handbag.
“I can not believe you all kept this away from me. This better be all there is to it, or I'm never going to forgive either one of you.” I vowed and stormed out of the dining room.
With my handbag slung over my shoulder, I navigated my way through the gate and hailed a cab immediately.
“The upper….” I gave the driver directions with my head stuck outside the windscreen. I didn't know why it hurt so much. Perhaps things would have been different if I had known something all along.
But…
Do I want things to be different?
When I arrived at the cabin, I crashed into the couch with so many thoughts creeping into my head. My mind drifted to the conversation I had with Mia, and my eyes widened with shock.
“Mia!” I gasped and scurried my phone out of my handbag and quickly dialled her number.
Could that be the secret she heard my mom and her mom talking about?
“Hello, my darling friend. Finally, remember that I'm alive somewhere? How is your hot uncle?” Mia sounded flirty all of a sudden, and I cringed.
“Mia! For once, I need you to be serious.” My tone was deep, and my voice hoarse from crying.
“Are you okay? Did you have a one night with a stranger and got pregnant. Oh my goodness!” Mia exclaimed, and I shook my head.
“Of course not! Why the hell would I do that?” I shrugged.
“Exactly! Cause I know my friend is a virgin waiting for the right man.” She said, and I chuckled. If only she knows this virgin has been getting fucked recklessly on the kitchen counter everyday.
“Wait a minute! If that's not what happened, then what is it? You sound so serious that I'm starting to get scared.” Her voice invaded my thoughts.
“Remember what you were saying the other day?” I asked her, and I could imagine the expression on her face.
“You might want to remind me, what was that? About your hot uncle?” She teased, and I groaned.
“Stop calling him that, Mia!” I gritted my teeth, and she scoffed.
“But he's hot! You said so yourself, remember?” Mia pressed, and I sighed in defeat.
“Seriously! What is it?” She got serious all of a sudden again.
“You were talking about some devasting family secret of ours. Did you happen to hear anything more than that? I need a clue, Mia.” I asked desperately.
“Trust me, my friend. If I had heard anything more. I would have told you everything.” She said, and my face crumbled in disappointment.
“Fuck!” I cursed and rose to my feet with my fingers in my mouth.
“Did something happen?” Her voice echoed in my ears as I paced the room back and forth.
“I can ask my mom for you if you want.” She suggested.
“No! Of course not, you can't freaking do that.” I yelled.
“Okay…” She sounded confused, and I inhaled sharply, trying to calm down my nerves.
“Listen to me carefully, Mia. This is no joke, so I need you to take it pretty seriously.” I said to her.
“I need you to find out anything about this mysterious family secret. Snoop around if you must, but I need you to get me something valid. I will also try to get something on my end here.” I mapped out a plan.
“So you are not going to tell me what's going on?” Mia's voice descended.
“I'm really just curious. Alex has been making some very weird calls, and when we had dinner tonight, they were whispering some stuff.” I lied to her.
I felt bad for leaving my best friend out, but I need to know exactly what it is before dragging anyone else along with it.
“Don't you think you should just stay out of it. It's probably adults' stuff, and they will handle it.” Mia suggested.
Seriously, I wish I could do that. But I'm already fucking my uncle. It's too late to turn back now.
“I just want to know.” I insisted, and Mia sighed over the phone.
“Alright, fine! I will help you however way I can.” She agreed.
“Thank you, Mia!” I felt relief wash through me with a smile appearing on my face.
Suddenly, I heard a crack, and the door knob twisted open. The smile on my face fizzled out instantly.
“So gist me, what…” I caught Mia's excited voice in a daze.
“I will call you later, Mia..” I hung up.
Meghan:I sat beside Alex in the waiting area, trying not to let my nerves show.He was holding my hand again. And I could tell by his tight grip that he was afraid.“You’re doing it again,” I whispered.“Doing what?” He asked before realizing that he was squeezing my hand. He let my hand go, before sighing. “I am sorry. I am doing my best to contain myself, but it gets hard sometimes.”I shook my head slightly. “It’s fine.”Truthfully, I didn’t mind. It meant he needed me.But I also knew Alex well enough now to recognize the tension sitting under his calm.He wasn’t scared easily. And for him to ignore his own rules about no public affection and holding my hand like that told me that he was doing his best to force his own fear down.He had faced business collapses, betrayals, legal battles, everything the world could throw at someone with his kind of power. But this was different. This was something he couldn’t control.“Whatever they say,” I said softly, “we’ll deal with it. I know
Alex:Hospitals have a particular kind of silence. Not the peaceful kind. The controlled kind.Everything is quieter than it should be, voices lowered, footsteps softened, machines humming in the background like the building itself is breathing.I hated it.I stood near the reception desk, my cane resting lightly against the tile floor, listening to the muted conversations around us. Papers shuffled somewhere behind the counter. A nurse spoke gently to someone down the hall. The faint scent of antiseptic hung in the air.Meghan’s hand was still in mine. She had taken it the moment we walked in and hadn’t let go since. And despite us being in public, I couldn’t care less if anyone was watching. I needed her to ground me.“You’re squeezing,” she whispered softly.I loosened my grip slightly. “Sorry.”“It’s fine.” Her voice was calm. “You’re pretending not to be nervous,”“I just don’t like not knowing the outcome of things.” I muttered, knowing well that she understood me more than anyo
Meghan:I had just finished brushing my hair when I heard the knock. Not loud. Not hesitant either.Just two quiet taps against the door.I already knew who it was.“Come in,” I said. And the fact that he knocked the door only told me that he was trying not to startle me.The door opened slowly, and Alex stepped inside. The hallway light framed him for a second before the door closed behind him. His cane tapped lightly against the floor as he moved further into the room, the sound familiar now in a way it hadn’t been months ago.I watched him carefully. There was something different about him tonight.I just couldn’t put my finger on it.“You’re still awake,” he said. “I didn’t expect you to be, given the long day that you had.”“I was about to sleep.” I said, raising an eyebrow. “But even so, you still knocked on the door. You clearly were hoping that I would be awake.”He nodded slightly, then moved forward until the edge of the bed brushed the back of his legs. His hand found the m
Laura:The house looked different from the outside at night.Too large.Too bright.Too much like the life my brother had always claimed he didn’t want. And the fact that he was back here only told me that he was bound to stay. Otherwise, he wasn’t going to come back at all, and my daughter insisting to stay told me a lot more than she would have wanted to admit.I stepped down the front stairs calmly, smiling at the staff member who opened the car door for me. The night air was cool, quiet, city silence instead of mountain wind.I slid into the back seat. The door closed. And the mask dropped, the smile on my face was wiped almost immediately as I stopped playing through with the act that I was going with.Dennis was already inside. He didn’t look at me immediately, nor did he open his mouth to speak. He waited until the driver pulled away from the gates. Then he spoke.“So.”Just that one word.I folded my hands neatly in my lap, fighting back the annoyance that I felt that so much
Alex:I knew the moment she stepped back into the house.I had left a while earlier, leaving her to work fulltime until she enrolled fully in college to have her part time. She was going to need to be trained, and I knew that it was not going to happen with her working half day.I was already seated at the dining table when she entered the room. The maids moved quietly around us, placing dishes down with careful precision. The house no longer echoed like the cabin had. It carried structure now. Presence. Witnesses. She took her seat across from me, not saying a word.“How was your first day?” I asked calmly. “I heard about the few issues you had starting.”She hesitated just a fraction too long.“Fine.” She said calmly. “I managed the issues eventually. I just needed to understand the concept.”I rested my hands on the table.“Fine,” I repeated.“Yes.”The word came firmer this time.I let the silence stretch. She hated silence when she felt cornered.“I heard you rearranged three mee
Meghan:The first hour had gone better than I expected.Too well, actually. No one had openly questioned me. No one had made a scene. A few polite smiles. A few longer looks than necessary. But nothing I couldn’t handle.I told myself that maybe I had overthought this. That maybe being “the boss’s niece” would be neutral. It wasn’t.It took exactly one mistake to understand that.I was organizing the afternoon schedule Thomas had left for me. Names. Meeting times. Boardroom allocations. There were three overlapping appointments, and I thought I had adjusted them correctly.Apparently, I hadn’t.A woman with sharp glasses and sharper cheekbones stopped at my desk.“Why did you move Mr. Hale’s meeting?” she asked flatly. “Who allowed you to even think about doing so?”I looked up. “Because it overlapped with the investment call. It will end up delaying more than it should, and might…”“That call is flexible.” She snapped, stopping me.“I was told the call was priority.” I said, looking
