Chapter 2

Autor: Fortune Paws
When I arrived home, I stood rooted to the spot in the entryway without turning on the lights. This was our marital home. From the couch to the dining table, from the color of the curtains to the style of the chandelier, every little detail had been chosen and settled on by Theo and me.

We had shared innumerable tender moments in this house. We'd curled up on the couch to watch movies, fumbled around in the kitchen as we tried to cook together, and shared passionate nights in the bedroom, the bathroom, and even in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows.

However, without fail, at the height of our intimacy, he would always gaze at my face with a lovestruck look and blurt out something that completely ruined the mood. "We're only one step away from perfection."

What were we missing? At long last, I had an answer for the question that had tormented me for ages. We were missing someone, a woman, to be specific.

The thought made my stomach churn. I staggered into the bathroom, clutching the edge of the sink as I dry-heaved over it.

When there was nothing left to throw up but bile, I raised my head and stared at my ghastly pale reflection in the mirror. Tears suddenly welled up in my eyes.

"Theo Montague, are you actually looking at me, or are you looking at another woman through me?"

By the time I finished washing up and came out, it was 10:00 pm.

Theo always claimed it was dangerous for his students to be out late, so whenever he dined with them, he made sure to wrap up by 9:00 pm. That night, however, the door didn't open until close to midnight.

Theo—who rarely drank—walked in reeking of alcohol. The moment he laid eyes on me, he demanded, "Yvette, why did you say those things in front of Octavia today?"

I was caught off guard. "Who?"

His expression darkened further. "Octavia. My student, Octavia Everleigh!"

Octavia. October.

The moment the two words overlapped in my mind, it felt as though someone had doused me in a bucket of ice-cold water.

When we started seeing each other, Theo had told me that October was his favorite month. Later, he had written more than once in the acknowledgments of his papers that October was his favorite month.

Consequently, throughout the five years we had been together, I had prepared a gift for him every October.

To make matters worse, I had even changed my WhatsApp username to October. We'd set our wedding date for October, too.

It hit me that he wasn't in love with October. He was in love with Octavia. An overwhelming wave of humiliation nearly drowned me.

I raised my hand and slapped him hard across the face. "Was I wrong, though?"

Gazing at him, my voice trembled. "I dare you to look me in the eye and tell me that everything, from her name to her face to the hair you've repeatedly asked me to grow long, is merely a coincidence, Theo Montague!

"I dare you to tell me that I, Yvette Rosenthal, am not the substitute you chose after you couldn't have the woman you really wanted!"

His head was whipped to the side, and he sobered up a little. When he shifted his attention toward me, his eyes had finally regained some clarity.

After a prolonged silence, as if realizing he could no longer hide the truth, he admitted lowly, "Initially, I did notice you because you looked like her. However, I really did fall in love with you later on.

"More importantly, she's my student. Nothing ever went down between us back then, and nothing ever will. Why are you holding on to this and making such a big deal out of it?"

I was making a big deal out of this. In his eyes, I was the one at fault.

Yet, I had my own pride. There was no way in hell that I would be another woman's substitute.

"From the moment you chose me because of my face, we were already wrong for each other. Let's call off our wedding."

He didn't think much of it, assuming that was something I'd said in the heat of the moment. "Our wedding's only a week away. The invitations have already been sent out, and both our families, relatives, and friends have all been notified.

"If you call it off now, what's going to happen to your parents' reputations?"

I'd rather bear the shame of disappointing Mom and Dad than marry a man whose heart will always belong to someone else.

Without wasting another breath on him, I turned on my heel to pick up a pair of scissors from the table.

Without the slightest hesitation, I cut off the long hair I'd been growing for five years. When my hair fell and scattered across the floor, his expression finally shifted. "Do you really have to take it this far, Yvette?"

"I'm not making a scene. I'm breaking up with you."

Theo stared at me long and hard before chuckling in exasperation. "Seriously, with that attitude, who else do you think would put up with you? I'm going to stay at the dorm for a few days. Use this time to cool off and get your head straight. There's no need for us to see each other before the wedding."

With that, he slammed the door and stormed off.

I lowered my head and stared at the brown strands of hair scattered across the floor. Moments later, I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in a long time.

As soon as the call connected, I asked, "I'm missing a groom for my wedding in a week. Are you in?"

Theo was rendered speechless. After a prolonged silence, he still refused to give up. "So… you're really going to sit back and watch me lose everything?"I almost thought I had misheard him. "Am I the one who's doing this to you, though? Was I the one who made you fall for your student? Was I the one who forced you to update your social media? Or was it me who put your family heirloom on her wrist and let her stand by your side in my wedding gown?"Theo had no defense left. His eyes gradually misted over. "I know I messed up, Yvette. Lately, when I arrive home, everything just feels off. The fridge is missing everything you used to keep stocked. "The files in my study are a mess because there's no one to organize them for me. When my stomach starts hurting, I realize I don't even know where the medicine is because you were always the one who told me where I kept it! "I used to take all of that for granted. However, now that you're gone, I realize a life without you isn't what I

The following morning, I was jolted awake by a relentless barrage of phone notifications. Messages from my work group chat, my classmates' group chat, and even several people I hadn't been in touch with for a long time all contained the same video. It was a recording of the scene from yesterday after work. Octavia, teary-eyed, clung to Theo, demanding to know why he, despite having loved her for so many years, still refused to be with her. Theo stood there with a grim expression, yet he didn't deny a single word. The video wasn't long, but it was more than enough to stir up a commotion. It had been forwarded an unknown number of times overnight.Initially, people in the comments were simply there for the drama. Yet, it didn't take long for someone to recognize Theo. "Isn't he that young professor from Northshire University?" "That woman is his former student. I think I've seen her before." "Hold on… A professor is in love with his own student?"Things immediately took a t

After cutting my hair short, my life gradually got back on track. My wrist was still injured, but it no longer interfered with my daily work. I reached out to the competition committee again to explain my situation and picked up right where I left off, refining my design according to the original plan. I simply took it one step at a time and did what I could. After all, I'd spent a whole year on this. I refused to concede defeat before I'd even seen the final result. Clyde didn't push for details. Every day, he simply made sure to scoop me up from the studio on time and take me home. Then, he'd unceremoniously shut my laptop when I tried to pull an all-nighter. More than half a month flew by like that. I had almost grown accustomed to a life without Theo. Then came the end of a workday. The second I walked out of the studio, I spotted him at the entrance. He must've waited for quite a while. His usually pristine dress shirt was visibly wrinkled, and deep exhaustion weighed d

After the wedding wrapped up, I never set foot in that marital home again. Most of my belongings had already been packed up during the days when Theo had moved into his dorm.Clyde owned a house in the southern part of the city. It wasn't far from my studio, and the decor was simple. Aside from the study, which was crammed with books on design and architecture, there was hardly any sign that anyone actually lived there. On the first night after I moved in, he stood at the door of the guest bedroom with a comforter in his arms. His tone was so natural as if we really were just old friends who hadn't seen each other in years. "Since your right hand's still injured, holler at me if you need help with anything tonight."I glanced at the comforter in his arms. "You're sleeping in the guest bedroom?""Where else?" Clyde cocked his brow. "I'm not low enough to jump a patient on night one." I was stumped. By the time I came to my senses, he had already closed the door to the guest bed

The banquet hall was packed to capacity with guests. When I walked in arm-in-arm with Clyde, quite a few people were astonished. After all, the groom on the invitations was supposed to be Theo. However, I didn't explain myself. Mom and Dad had already known about this ahead of time. Tears welled up in their eyes as they gazed at me.In the end, without asking a thing, Mom simply straightened my veil. "It's your own choice, so don't regret it." My nose prickled. "I won't."The wedding ceremony had been significantly shortened at the last minute. There were no lengthy vows or emotionally charged speeches. When it came time to exchange rings, Clyde didn't immediately slip the ring onto my finger. Instead, he said lowly, "Yvette, you can still back out now." I looked up at him. His eyes were bright, but his expression was unusually solemn. "I only showed up so you wouldn't be humiliated. However, you know me. Once this ring is on your finger, you're the only woman I'll ever cons

I turned on my heel and came face-to-face with a man in a bespoke black suit. He must've rushed here because his hair was slightly tousled across his forehead. However, that face was someone I knew all too well. Clyde Lovell, my childhood sweetheart, and the man who had walked out of my life five years ago because I had chosen to be with Theo. Theo clearly recognized him, too. After all, back when we first became official, he had picked a massive fight with me because of Clyde. Theo's expression instantly hardened when he saw Clyde in the groom's attire. "Clyde?"Clyde didn't even give him the time of day. He walked straight up to me, took the bouquet from my hand, and glanced at my cast-bound right arm. "How did you end up in this state?"Before I could answer, Theo stepped forward. "Yvette, what is the meaning of this?" His eyes darted back and forth between Clyde and me several times. Then, as if he had figured it out, his expression became livid. "Don't tell me this 'wedd
