Chapter 3

Autor: Fortune Paws
After Theo moved out, I was more than happy to have my peace and quiet as I slowly packed up my belongings.

However, on the afternoon of the fifth day, when I went to the bridal shop to pick up my wedding gown, I spotted two familiar faces in the fitting area—Theo and Octavia. Worse still, she was wearing the wedding gown I'd custom-ordered six months in advance.

When he caught sight of me, he arched his brow and scoffed. "I thought you said the wedding was off. Why are you here? You talked a big game, yet you still came here to try on your wedding gown."

Without sparing him so much as a glance, I said to the visibly flustered sales associate beside him, "I've already paid for this wedding gown in full. Why is someone else wearing it?"

The sales associate stammered, "Y-Your fiance said..."

"He's not my fiance," I cut her off coldly. Then, I pointed at Octavia. "Now, have her take it off."

Theo scowled. "Can't you be a little more sensible, Yvette? Do you really have to make such a scene in public? Octavia's my student. She's just never worn a wedding gown before, so I brought her here to try one on."

"She's never been dead either. Why don't you drop dead with her while you're at it?"

"Yvette!" His expression darkened in an instant. "Must you always be so cruel with your words?"

Octavia walked up to us with teary eyes. "I'm sorry, Yvette. I just thought this wedding gown was gorgeous, and I couldn't help myself…"

My gaze landed on her, and I was about to snap back when the emerald bangle on her wrist caught my eye. In a heartbeat, all my biting words died in my throat.

That was the Montagues' family heirloom. Supposedly, ever since Theo's great-great-grandmother's time, it had been passed down strictly to the lady of the Montague family.

That bangle had always been like a carrot dangled right in front of my eyes. I could see it, but I always had to push myself harder before I could touch it.

Because Theo's mother, Sienna Bellamy, casually mentioned that he had a sensitive stomach, I'd taught myself how to cook elaborate meals for him.

Because Theo's father, Winston Montague, loved art, I'd forced myself to study ancient relics and copybooks I'd never had any interest in. Even when it came to choosing gifts for holidays and special occasions, I had to deliberate over it half a month in advance.

Theo had always known of my efforts. He'd smile and ruffle my hair. "What's the rush? I'll put it on you myself on our wedding day."

His words had made me glow with happiness for a long, long time.

Yet now, I realized that the one thing I'd had to work so hard to obtain was given to Octavia so effortlessly. She didn't even have to do a single thing. So, this was the difference between the woman he loved and the woman he didn't.

As Theo sensed my gaze, an awkward expression crossed his face. However, he soon regained his self-righteous composure.

"I'll give you a grand wedding and the title of my wife. This bangle, on the other hand, is merely a material possession. I'll let Octavia have it so she has something to remember me by."

A self-deprecating chuckle escaped my lips. Looking back now, all those years I'd spent desperately trying to please him seemed like nothing more than a joke.

However, I only dwelled on that thought for a fraction of a second before I pulled myself together. "It's your family's property. You can give it to whomever you want. However, this wedding gown was bought with my own money."

I locked eyes with Octavia. "Now, take it off."

Theo's expression hardened. "Give it a rest, Yvette! If you keep being this unreasonable, I won't show up on the wedding day. Let's see how you explain it to both our families and friends when you don't have a groom at the altar!"

I almost laughed out loud. I'd already found myself a groom ages ago. From the moment I made that phone call, my wedding ceased to have anything to do with Theo.

I couldn't be bothered to explain myself, though. I simply reiterated, "Take off my wedding gown."

When Theo realized I wasn't giving him an ounce of grace, his features contorted, and he reached out to seize my arm. "Get over here!"

His movement was so frantic that I bumped into the display rack beside me. The heavy metal clothing rack came crashing down toward us. However, he instinctively let go of my hand and rushed to shield Octavia, who was farther away, pulling her tightly into his arms.

The very next second, with a deafening thud, the rack struck my wrist dead-on. The excruciating pain turned everything before my eyes pitch-black, causing my entire body to tremble uncontrollably.

After being rushed to the hospital, the doctor held up my X-rays and told me that I had a hairline fracture in my right wrist. I wouldn't be able to hold a pen for extended periods for at least three months, let alone do any work that required fine motor skills.

I stared at my right hand encased in a cast in silence for what felt like an eternity. I was an architectural designer, and not long after my wedding was the international design competition I'd spent an entire year preparing for. Now, it was all ruined.

Theo was rendered speechless. After a prolonged silence, he still refused to give up. "So… you're really going to sit back and watch me lose everything?"I almost thought I had misheard him. "Am I the one who's doing this to you, though? Was I the one who made you fall for your student? Was I the one who forced you to update your social media? Or was it me who put your family heirloom on her wrist and let her stand by your side in my wedding gown?"Theo had no defense left. His eyes gradually misted over. "I know I messed up, Yvette. Lately, when I arrive home, everything just feels off. The fridge is missing everything you used to keep stocked. "The files in my study are a mess because there's no one to organize them for me. When my stomach starts hurting, I realize I don't even know where the medicine is because you were always the one who told me where I kept it! "I used to take all of that for granted. However, now that you're gone, I realize a life without you isn't what I

The following morning, I was jolted awake by a relentless barrage of phone notifications. Messages from my work group chat, my classmates' group chat, and even several people I hadn't been in touch with for a long time all contained the same video. It was a recording of the scene from yesterday after work. Octavia, teary-eyed, clung to Theo, demanding to know why he, despite having loved her for so many years, still refused to be with her. Theo stood there with a grim expression, yet he didn't deny a single word. The video wasn't long, but it was more than enough to stir up a commotion. It had been forwarded an unknown number of times overnight.Initially, people in the comments were simply there for the drama. Yet, it didn't take long for someone to recognize Theo. "Isn't he that young professor from Northshire University?" "That woman is his former student. I think I've seen her before." "Hold on… A professor is in love with his own student?"Things immediately took a t

After cutting my hair short, my life gradually got back on track. My wrist was still injured, but it no longer interfered with my daily work. I reached out to the competition committee again to explain my situation and picked up right where I left off, refining my design according to the original plan. I simply took it one step at a time and did what I could. After all, I'd spent a whole year on this. I refused to concede defeat before I'd even seen the final result. Clyde didn't push for details. Every day, he simply made sure to scoop me up from the studio on time and take me home. Then, he'd unceremoniously shut my laptop when I tried to pull an all-nighter. More than half a month flew by like that. I had almost grown accustomed to a life without Theo. Then came the end of a workday. The second I walked out of the studio, I spotted him at the entrance. He must've waited for quite a while. His usually pristine dress shirt was visibly wrinkled, and deep exhaustion weighed d

After the wedding wrapped up, I never set foot in that marital home again. Most of my belongings had already been packed up during the days when Theo had moved into his dorm.Clyde owned a house in the southern part of the city. It wasn't far from my studio, and the decor was simple. Aside from the study, which was crammed with books on design and architecture, there was hardly any sign that anyone actually lived there. On the first night after I moved in, he stood at the door of the guest bedroom with a comforter in his arms. His tone was so natural as if we really were just old friends who hadn't seen each other in years. "Since your right hand's still injured, holler at me if you need help with anything tonight."I glanced at the comforter in his arms. "You're sleeping in the guest bedroom?""Where else?" Clyde cocked his brow. "I'm not low enough to jump a patient on night one." I was stumped. By the time I came to my senses, he had already closed the door to the guest bed

The banquet hall was packed to capacity with guests. When I walked in arm-in-arm with Clyde, quite a few people were astonished. After all, the groom on the invitations was supposed to be Theo. However, I didn't explain myself. Mom and Dad had already known about this ahead of time. Tears welled up in their eyes as they gazed at me.In the end, without asking a thing, Mom simply straightened my veil. "It's your own choice, so don't regret it." My nose prickled. "I won't."The wedding ceremony had been significantly shortened at the last minute. There were no lengthy vows or emotionally charged speeches. When it came time to exchange rings, Clyde didn't immediately slip the ring onto my finger. Instead, he said lowly, "Yvette, you can still back out now." I looked up at him. His eyes were bright, but his expression was unusually solemn. "I only showed up so you wouldn't be humiliated. However, you know me. Once this ring is on your finger, you're the only woman I'll ever cons

I turned on my heel and came face-to-face with a man in a bespoke black suit. He must've rushed here because his hair was slightly tousled across his forehead. However, that face was someone I knew all too well. Clyde Lovell, my childhood sweetheart, and the man who had walked out of my life five years ago because I had chosen to be with Theo. Theo clearly recognized him, too. After all, back when we first became official, he had picked a massive fight with me because of Clyde. Theo's expression instantly hardened when he saw Clyde in the groom's attire. "Clyde?"Clyde didn't even give him the time of day. He walked straight up to me, took the bouquet from my hand, and glanced at my cast-bound right arm. "How did you end up in this state?"Before I could answer, Theo stepped forward. "Yvette, what is the meaning of this?" His eyes darted back and forth between Clyde and me several times. Then, as if he had figured it out, his expression became livid. "Don't tell me this 'wedd
