Chapter 8

Alessandro:

I waited as Valerie showed her father out the door before I walked out of the closet just as she walked into the infirmary room.

Her heart raced and she shook her head as I ran my fingers through the dog’s muzzle for a second before turning to face her.

“You were genuinely saving me.” I said, not turning to face her. She walked toward the dog before lifting him in her arms and putting him back inside the cage. The woman had my bed in front of one of the secluded areas where she kept her injured animals, and seeing that, I couldn’t help but wonder what her reasons were.

“Sit, you shouldn’t have moved so early.” She said, nodding at the bed before heading toward the sink.

“Rude,” I sat down on the bed and watched as she brought a bandage and her tools before setting them on the stool beside her. She ran her finger over my shoulder for a second, and I couldn’t help but find myself looking at her, admiring her features before she looked at me.
