The silver shackles bite deeper with every step.

Two guards shove me forward through the carved obsidian corridor, their claws half-unsheathed, breathing hot against the back of my neck. The Council Chamber doors rise ahead—tall, black, and carved with snarling wolves that seem to watch me as I approach.

My heart thunders, but I lift my chin. I won’t give them the satisfaction of seeing me break.

The doors boom open.

Sound crashes over me like a wave—growls, murmurs, the metallic scrape of armor. The circular chamber is packed with wolves in formal colors, council banners draped like hunting shadows overhead. At the center stands the crescent-shaped dais, lit by torches burning a deep crimson flame.

My knees weaken.

The Council of Bloodfang.

The last place I ever wanted to be dragged into—especially in chains.

Damien is already there.

He stands at the right side of the dais, posture rigid, eyes blazing with a cold fury that locks onto me the moment I’m shoved into the circle. If I had

Kael’s weight collapses against me before I can brace for it. One second he is a wall of muscle shielding me from the rebel strike—then he’s dropping to his knees, breath shuddering, a strangled sound leaving his throat as the blade sinks deep into his side.“Kael!” I catch him before he hits the floor. Heat blooms across my palms—his blood, thick and too warm, spilling through my fingers. “Stay with me. Look at me.”His eyes flutter open, the familiar steel-gray clouded with pain. “Aria… run. You have to run.”Run? Leave him? My chest cracks open at the thought. The corridor around us is madness—shouts, clashing steel, fires licking up the stone walls, casting everything in violent orange. Damien’s rebels are pushing inward, loyalists falling back in a storm of smoke and sparks. The pack is devouring itself.Riven is somewhere in that chaos, fighting toward me. I can feel his fury like a pulse in the air. But Kael is here—bleeding out in my arms.“I’m not leaving you,” I whisper, hea

The corridors are on fire.Smoke coils through the narrow passages of the council hall as Kael drags me forward, his grip tight around my wrist. Behind us, the chamber erupts into full-scale war—wolves shifting, claws raking stone, steel clashing with steel. Damien’s rebels flood the council floor, and Riven’s loyalists fight tooth and fang to hold the line. But the only thing I can hear is Riven’s voice shouting my name.I force myself not to look back.My lungs burn as Kael pulls me through a collapsing archway. Flames lick the walls, spreading faster than any natural fire—this blaze is fed by Shadowfang magic, and the heat pulses like a living thing.“Keep low,” Kael growls, shoving me beneath a drifting sheet of smoke. His body shields mine as embers rain down like sparks from a forge. “Damien’s men are everywhere. He wants you alive, but not unharmed.”“Why?” My voice cracks. “What does he gain by burning down his own pack?”Kael doesn’t slow. “Chaos crowns tyrants.”The roar of

The chamber erupts before I can take another breath.Shouts collide with growls. Wolves shift mid-stride, bones cracking, claws scraping marble. Steel flashes as guards reach for blades—some bearing Riven’s crest, others Damien’s. The air thickens with the metallic scent of blood and the electric snap of rising magic.Damien still stands at the center of it all, the embers of the Blood Flames’ mark burning across his skin like a serpent made of fire. His eyes glint with triumph, not shame.“You see it now,” he says, voice carrying over the chaos. “Shadowfang rotted long before I touched its throne. I merely followed the path your bloodline laid out for me.”My bloodline. The word bites deeper than the silver shackles cutting into my wrists.Riven lunges forward, teeth lengthening, his rage boiling into something animal. “You betrayed our father. Our pack. Our laws. And now you dare claim destiny?”Damien laughs—a cold, razor-edged sound. “Destiny doesn’t need permission. It only needs

The air in the council chamber thickened, heavy with tension, my heart hammering like a drum in a war march. Damien’s smirk gleamed in the dim torchlight, a predator savoring its prey. His hand rose slowly, deliberately, and a chilling ripple swept through the guards—half of them dropped to their knees in obedient submission. My chest constricted. No… this can’t be happening. I gripped the silver shackles biting into my wrists, but they did nothing to restrain the fury that bubbled in me. Riven’s presence was beside me, tall and menacing, the alpha’s aura rippling like a storm about to break. His eyes, dark as midnight, locked on Damien, and every muscle in his body tensed. I felt the air between them thicken, dangerous and combustible, like lightning waiting for a spark.“Is this… loyalty?” Damien’s voice cut through the murmurs of the kneeling guards, silk-smooth yet lethal, carrying an arrogance I had come to know too well. “Or fear?”Riven’s growl vibrated through the floor beneat

The chamber is still trembling from the force of the Blood Flames when the last curl of fire slithers back into the brazier, hissing like it tasted something forbidden. My lungs burn as though I’ve been breathing smoke, but it’s the silence—the stunned, horrified, disbelieving silence—that steals the air from my throat.Every eye is on Damien. And Damien…Damien is smiling.A thin wisp of smoke coils from the fresh mark seared along his forearm, bright as molten gold and shaped like the Shadowfang sigil—the mark of an oath breaker.A traitor. The word pulses in the chamber, even though no one speaks it aloud.I force myself to stand straighter despite the trembling in my knees. The flames hadn’t burned me—no, they’d crowned me. I can still feel the phantom weight of darkness circling above my head like a halo forged from shadow. As if the fire recognized me. Accept me.But Damien…My voice cracks as it leaves my throat. “The Blood Flames don’t lie. You broke the Shadowfang oath.”Dami

The chamber doors slam shut behind me, sealing in the scent of old stone, smoke, and judgment. The council circles me like vultures dressed in ceremonial robes, their eyes gleaming with something far hungrier than truth.I stand in the center of the arena—bare-footed, silver still biting into my wrists, though they’ve removed the shackles themselves to place me in the trial ring.My skin tingles with heat before a single flame even appears. The Blood Flames know I’m here.Riven tries to push forward, a snarl ripping from him, but two enforcers block his path. “She’s mine—” he starts.“Silence, Alpha,” Councilor Rhys snaps. “If you interfere, the punishment will be extended to you.”Riven’s eyes burn gold, wolf surfacing, fury barely leashed.Damien stands near him, arms folded, expression carved from ice. But his gaze keeps sliding toward me—calculating, waiting.Waiting for me to burn.Councilor Therin lifts the ancient brazier, its black metal etched with runes older than any pack.
