The Bad Ones Are Coming

The fifth man stumbles in and he has be straight from the frat house. Cropped hoodie reveals a thick trunk and chiseled abs, curls in his mullet wild, sweatpants low, chewing a long piece of red liquorice.

He skids to a halt, blinks at the room, then zeroes in on me like he’s spotted a unicorn.

Ezra sighs so loudly it might actually be a soul leaving his body.

“Jax,” Corrian growls.

“Sorry, Daddy.” Jax mutters, not even remotely sorry, mouth full of sugar and mischief. He grins, wide and wicked, then turns back to me.

I’m still frozen, mouth slightly open.

Jax’s smile goes nuclear.

He drops to one knee, takes my hand with mock ceremony, kisses it with a flourish, and says, completely deadpan.

“And who, pray tell, is the walking sex cloud who summoned me from my sacred nap?”

No way I am getting out of here without trauma or orgasms, probably both.

Corrian kicks off his spot, standing to full height. Every other man shrinks back an inch, including Jax who drops my hand, stands and sidles up to the ghost leant by the door. It looks like he nuzzles into the assassin's shoulder.

The heat is making me hallucinate.

Ezra speaks, pulling me from my spiral.

“So this is her?” he asks, barely glancing at me.

“This is her,” Corrian says, nodding.

Ezra eyes me over the rim of his cup.

“Not what I expected.”

“Rude.” I snap back.

Ezra just grins over his cup.

“So,” I squeak out. “This is turning into some kind of very niche, cult recruitment. I’m just gonna-” I flick my thumb over my shoulder toward the door.

Corrian steps forward, the movement sending more warmth firing towards me. He hands me a piece of paper.

A quick glance, I see it’s a contract.

“We’d like to offer you the job. Effective immediately.”

I blink.

“I haven’t answered any questions. I don’t know what this job even is.”

“You're a fit for it. I’m sure.” Corrian says smoothly.

“But you haven’t even–”

“Here’s the starting salary,” Ezra interrupts me, tapping at his tablet before turning the screen towards me.

It’s double what the ad promised, five times what I’ve ever made in my life.

“This a prank?” I snap, temper that’s been building from the whole, overwhelming, shit situation finally bubbling over.

“I’m on one of those weird shows where the host jumps out and tells me I’ve been hired to babysit feral pigs. Or do you all just get off on fucking with me?”

They all react at once. Jax whines and starts to move towards me, the assassin puts an arm in front of him, holding him back. Viking growls, but doesn’t move. Ezra smirks, Corrian somehow makes himself look even bigger.

“It isn’t a prank.” Corrian replies, eyes locked on mine. “We have a job opening. I am an exceptionally good judge of character, and believe you will be the perfect fit for the role.”

He steps closer, towering over me now, energy flowing off him in waves.

“We aren’t trying to trick you, Frankie.”

I open my mouth. I close it. The way my name sounds in this mans mouth is criminal, and totally unfair to me. Something strange is happening here. I don’t know what or why. But I can’t make myself say no.

Shit.

“In or out Frankfurter?” Jax chimes in with a new nickname, bouncing on the balls of his feet, willing me on.

“Okay,” I sigh. “I’m in. For now.”

The assassin’s lip twitches, a ghost of a smirk, the first expression I’ve seen on him.

It’s not comforting.

Corrian nods once and pulls a pen from his trouser pocket. He hands it to me and motions towards the contract sat on the table in front of me.

Why does this feel like signing for more than a job?

My fingers shake a little as I sign.

Corrian takes the paper wordlessly, walks to the far corner of the room, and opens what I thought was a supply cabinet. It’s a safe. There’s no keypad, no dial, just a palm reader. He presses his hand to the surface and slides the contract inside, closes it, and when he turns back, it’s like a switch flips.

“This is Leo,” he says, nodding to the Viking. Leo grunts in response.

“Ezra.” CEO guy who already looks like he regrets letting me sign anything. He offers a curt nod and nothing else.

“River.” The shadow. Still watching me, still not blinking.

“Jax,” Corrian adds, with the vocal equivalent of an exhausted sigh.

“Hi!” Jax beams. “We’re gonna have so much fun.”

“I’ll show you around.” Corrian gestures to the door.

He’s already out the door by the time I can scramble out of my seat. I trail behind him, turning to the side so I don’t accidentally brush against River.

As I step into the hall, Jax bellows behind me.

“Oh shit, SNACKS.”

I follow Corrian through the daycare and try not to stare too hard. The vibe is secret government project. A little too clean. A little too quiet. There are no kids here right now, but I can almost feel them in the walls. The cubbies are filled, the lockers are labeled.

“The children we take care of… they’re special,” Corrian says as we pass a reading nook with oversized bean bag chairs and a shelf full of books no toddler would read.

I catch one title, ‘Teeth Are Not for Biting (But Sometimes They Are)’.

I raise an eyebrow. “Special how?”

He doesn’t answer.

We pass a hallway lined with artwork. Crayon drawings, finger paints, but some of them are odd. Red scribbles in circular patterns, shapes that look more like symbols than animals. One has a giant black figure drawn with scratchy lines and tiny words underneath it.

I lean closer.

‘The Bad Ones Are Coming.’

“The world’s a shitty place,” he says quietly. “So I’m gonna teach you some important things.”The words catch me off guard. Not because they’re dramatic, River doesn’t speak dramatically, he says things plainly.Because nobody’s ever taught me things before just because they wanted me safer. I cover quickly with sarcasm because emotional vulnerability is for people with stable childhoods.“What, like taxes?”“Self-defense.”“Oh.”River steps closer until the toes of his boots are a breath from mine. Slowly, giving me every opportunity to pull away, he lifts one hand and tips my chin upward gently.Heat floods through me as his thumb brushes once across my cheekbone.“You’re small,” he murmurs.“That is the first time anyone has ever said that.” I huff a laugh. “River, my dear, I am not small.”“You’re smaller than me, than us.” His gaze skims down my body. “Perfect.”I blink.“People underestimate you because you smile when you’re uncomfortable.”That one lands directly in my unresol

  • Alpha Brat   The Clearing

River does not explain the tail.Which, personally, I think is wildly unfair considering I just watched Corrian tackle three furries who were talking shit about me into the forest like a divorced dad at a rugby match.Instead, he waits patiently while I finish dragging my jeans on the correct way around, leaning against the wall with his arms folded across his chest like this is a completely normal Tuesday morning and not the beginning of my psychological collapse.“You gonna murder me?” I ask finally.River blinks once. “No.”“Kidnap me into your weird woodland mascot cult?”“No.”“Gaslight me about the ears?”A pause.“Yes.”“At least you’re honest.”That almost-smile appears again. Tiny and barely there unless you’re looking for it.I hate that I’m already learning his expressions. He pushes off the wall then and crosses the room toward me with that same unnerving silence that clings to him like smoke. The others fill space naturally, River somehow moves through the world without d

  • Alpha Brat   Raging River

The twitchy one locks eyes with me and his pupils blow wide instantly.“Oh,” he growls.Shit.The twitchy one inhales deeply and his entire body goes rigid.“No fucking way,” he breathes. The tail starts wagging, actually wagging.I stare at it in horror, where does he have that inserted?“Nope,” I whisper. Then louder.“Nope.”The morning air feels razor sharp against my damp skin as four sets of eyes lock onto me standing frozen on the balcony in nothing but a towel. Water still drips slowly down my legs from the bath. My hair hangs damp around my shoulders. The stupid towel has loosened at the chest and judging by the way the bald scarred guy’s expression shifts, I’m one strong breeze away from accidental public nudity.Love this for me.Corrian sees it.And God, even from here, that man has presence. He stands in the middle of the clearing like the forest itself rearranged around him. Dark hair loose this morning, broad shoulders tense beneath a fitted black shirt, jaw sharp eno

  • Alpha Brat   Furries

I wake up tangled in approximately fourteen blankets and one extremely questionable life decision. For a few blissful seconds, I forget where I am. What I cannot forget, is how since being here I have developed a super nose. My sense of smell is another level, and that alone has me worried about how damaged my body is from years of city grime.Right now, whatever that is makes me want to snuggle back in and never leave. I take another whiff. My eyes snap open, “Oh no.”Because my entire bed smells like Jax and Leo.Not faintly, it’s everywhere. Ground into the sheets, clinging to the pillows, wrapped around me like the world’s most emotionally confusing weighted blanket. And somehow, overnight, my stupid body has decided this is comforting instead of deeply alarming.I bury my face in a pillow and groan loud enough to the wildlife outside.Last night runs through my mind.Leo lifting me, Jax behind me with his hands everywhere. Growling. Teeth scraping my mouth. Corrian catching us a

  • Alpha Brat   Standoff

Leo looks one second away from ripping the door off its hinges. Actually, scratch that. The hinges are already bent.He fills the doorway, huge shoulders straining beneath a black thermal, chest heaving hard enough I can see the fabric pulling with every breath. His braid hangs over one shoulder slightly loose now, tattoos disappearing beneath his collar while his eyes are on me with the kind of intensity that makes my stomach drop straight to my core.Or maybe that’s because I’m still sitting in Jax’s lap with his fingers still wet on my thigh.Could honestly be either.Jax, infuriatingly, doesn’t look even slightly alarmed. If anything, he looks sleepy. Content. One big hand still rubbing slow circles against my hip while he presses a kiss against the side of my head like we’re a married couple winding down after IKEA shopping, instead of whatever the hell this is.“Frankie needed comfort,” he says simply.Leo makes a sound low in his chest that absolutely does not belong to a huma

  • Alpha Brat   Tears

I make it halfway down the hallway before my legs stop cooperating. There’s no dramatic swoon or delicate Victorian fainting couch situation. My body just suddenly decides it’s done participating in whatever fresh hell this is and turns to static beneath me.One kiss. One stupid, devastating kiss. And now I’m walking around this giant forest murder-lodge feeling like someone scooped my insides out with a spoon.“Before I do something irresponsible.”The words loop in my head all the way upstairs. Which is rich considering shoving your tongue down your employee’s throat in a locked office already feels pretty high on the irresponsibility scale. My new room sits at the end of the hall, tucked away behind a heavy wooden door that already feels familiar. Safe.I push inside and immediately stop, I didn’t have time to really take it in after the whirlwind that was yesterday. This room is obscene. Not sexy obscene. Comfy obscene. The bed alone could easily sleep a family of ten and a medium
