Chapter 16
The curse slipped from my mouth as I watched Alpha Desmond pass out. I stepped forward but stopped myself. What the hell was I doing? The four men around him quickly ran to his aid. My eyes filled with tears and my body started to shake.
“I thought you said he had a wife.”
Marcus looked down at me. “My son? He has a wife and two kids.”
I looked up at him, the tears now falling down my cheeks. His confusion turned to shock and he put a hand on my arm.
“His wife isn’t his mate though, is she…?” I tried to choke out my words between the tears.
Realization flashed across his face and his eyes only got bigger. He looked from me to his son. “You’re his mate.”

I spent the day in the office at home. Catching up on paperwork that I had missed yesterday. I jolted up. Looking around, I saw the worried faces of my father, mother, Scott and Derek. Putting a hand to my head, it sounded like a drum line banging around. It took a moment but I realized I was at my parents’ house, on their couch in the living room. I was trying to collect my thoughts. There was so much going on, jumbled emotions and I leaned over the edge of the couch. They were all watching me and I sighed. I was naked, covered in one of the quilts my mother had made. Looking down at my hands, I saw they were covered in red. Whose blood was this? I looked up at them, my hands starting to shake. “What…what is going on…” Scott looked away and turned, leaving the room. Derek also looked away. What the hell had happened? These two were with me when I tortured and killed countless people. They knew the type of person I was, and watching them turn from me made me even more worried. “What happened?” I let the edge in my voice leak through my question.

I could hear raised voices outside the room. It didn’t matter. Nothing mattered anymore. The pain was constant now. At first, I could deal with it. I could sleep and just wake up through the waves that would come. That was hours ago though. I couldn’t function now. My mother and father checked in on me every couple hours. At some point, I curled up in the corner of the room on the floor and stayed there through the majority of it. My back was against the wall and I buried my face in my knees in the dark room. What made it worse was that all this pain was also affecting my mate. My sweet human mate was writhing in this same pain. I could feel her through the bond. Her fear, her resignation, her sadness. I could feel her brush against me as well. I let her feel the regret, sadness, and longing I had for her. I didn’t want her to go through this too. I wanted to ease her pain even if it meant making my own worse. “Helena, for the last time, you cannot see him!”

***Olivia’s POV*** I watched it in slow motion. Ricky had broken free of Aamon’s Alpha presence and shifted, running toward us. Aamon had taken over completely. I saw it in his eyes and in the presence. There were a few moments I could feel Desmond as he tried to fight through the power of his wolf. He lost though. He had jumped, his jaws open as Ricky jumped from the side, trying to get between us. Desmond might have tried to stop but I knew Aamon wouldn’t. To say I turned a few heads was an understatement. The moment I walked into the town, I think everyone stopped to stare. It was actually embarrassing. I knew this was what was going to happen but I didn’t think it would be as bad as the movies. When someone rides a bike past and runs into a pole because they were staring. That’s exactly what happened. You would think I would be used to it but I didn’t really stay in small towns like this for long periods of time. Big cities were used to eclectic groups of people and no one would give me a second glance. I walked across the street into the grassy park of the center square. Ducking into the marble gazebo, I reveled in the shade. The weather wasn’t hot but the two hour walk in the sun wasn’t exactly fun. Leaning against the gazebo railing, I looked out over the main city streets. The most attention I received had been from the pack members, not so much the fey or the tourists.
