Whispers of Doubt

Nyra’s POV

The echo of Selene’s voice still lingered in my ears long after she was dragged out of sight. The courtyard had emptied, the whispers scattering like flocks of frightened birds. But their residue clung to the air, sharp and suffocating. I could feel the eyes that weren’t there anymore, accusations, doubts, curiosity, burning into my skin as if they had been branded there permanently.

When the gates finally closed behind her, I felt the ground beneath my feet steady, though my chest remained heavy. I should have been relieved. Draven had ordered her removal. Auren was safe beside me. The threat has been contained, at least for now. And yet… the silence afterward felt more poisonous than Selene’s words had been.

Inside the council chamber, the three of us finally sat together. Draven’s jaw was clenched, his expression unreadable, though the tendons in his neck betrayed the storm beneath his control. Auren sat at the end of the long oak table, his hands pres

The Difficult Decision 2Nyra's POVDraven's head was leaning to one side and his eyes were narrowed, glaring at me like a stranger, since the stranger's face loomed in front of him in his mate. His voice fell low, a killing whisper that sent hair standing on the back of my neck. "And you expect me to stand idly by and do nothing. Stand here and let you freely walk into her exquisitely spun web of deceit and lies?""Yes." The syllable got stuck in my throat, but I managed to force it out. "That's all I ask of you." "Trust me this far to let me do it. Observe from the sidelines and be ready to step in when the moment arises. Let me work my way, my terms."His lip was a thin line, his silence even louder than the storm of tantrums he could ever unleash. For an elongated, impossibly long moment, the space between us buzzed with kept rage and a locked-up feeling. Then he took a step nearer, looming large over me in stature, looming without dwarfing me."Do you know what you're asking me t

The Difficult DecisionNyra's POVThe corridors of Crescent Moon were empty when I came back, the scent of rain clinging to the aging walls like a memory that would not leave. It was damp and cold air that stung and bit, with a bite that spoke of storms to come. I could feel it on my skin, oozing down through my clothes, but most of the weight that rested on my shoulders had been constructed neither by the tempest raging outside nor by the seer.My audience with the seer coursed through me like poison coursing through my blood, her words biting, unbending, and maddeningly opaque. "Draven had but a single child, Auren, the rest, condemned in the tapestry of fate." My brain circled that solitary fact like a buzzard, back and forth and back and forth until it hit hard enough to sizzle with every heartbeat. This evening's pack house was not the same, filled with a tension I couldn't locate. Or perhaps it was my own rage, my own hot wish to do something and not remain quiet and wait for ha

Veil of DeceitNyra’s POV The seer’s words clung to me like wet cloth. Draven’s only child is Auren. That phrase echoed in my mind, repeating in waves that crashed louder with every step I took away from her cave. My legs moved, but my body felt heavy, as though the earth itself wanted to anchor me there in the shadows of truth. The night air was cold, cutting, sharp enough to sting my lungs. My fingers curled into my cloak as though fabric could shield me from destiny. I should have felt relief, confirmation that Auren is truly Draven’s son, not a shadow cast by another’s claim, but instead my chest ached with a deeper dread. If fate had already carved its script, then what chance did I have to rewrite it?The path stretched before me, familiar yet unwelcoming. Each rustle of the trees felt like whispers, mocking me with riddles I couldn’t solve. Zaira’s voice still haunted me, her grip over my body a memory that hadn’t dulled, her hunger for Auren a threat that only grew sharper in

The word of the SeerNyra's POVThe shooting in her phrasing set fire to a blaze of fury within me that consumed my despair to ash, leaving something more difficult and more dangerous behind. "That's not good enough," I snarled, my voice barely above a breath but more menacing than any bellow could possibly have been. "I didn't come here for more riddles or koan truths. You must know something concrete, something useful. You always do. I have seen the way truth distorts around you like light around a star."The seer tilted her head, the movement bird-like and unnerving, her gaze boring into me as if I were crystal. Her voice, when she spoke, had a new weight, a new strength behind it that warped the air between us to lean in and listen."Zaira asserts that what she desires is hers by birth and blood and ancient pact," she stated, each word placed with care. "Auren is better than your son or Draven's heir." "He is a key, forged in prophecy and blood and powers beyond memory, and such k

Thread of FateNyra's POVThe path to the seer's residence was slender, half-hidden by gnarled roots and the heavy canopy above that swallowed even the thunder of my steps. Massive oaks lined up in groups like friends, arms clasped together to form an alleyway of shadows that hummed with secrets.I hadn't told Draven or Auren where I was headed. If I had, Draven would have silenced me, his instincts prevailing over any understanding of my desire for solitude. And Auren… he would have followed behind, obstinate and guardian-like as always, his child's eyes already too attuned, too haunted by prophecies he knew too little of.But I needed isolation. I needed truth that had not been tainted by hope or denial, untinted by the fierce passion that blinded my senses when it was a question of shielding my family. The atmosphere was thick with an abnormal power as I drew near, vibrating like the hum of a bee from some distant flower, perpetually present in this location like a mist on a mornin
