Chapter 3

The next day was a Saturday which meant more sleep and rest for Emma than she usually allowed on weekdays but because of the routine she had religiously followed for more than three years now she often found it hard to sleep in on Saturday like she wished so she kept trying her luck.

She turned on her side and backed her closed windows snuggling deeper into the mountain of blanket she had thrown on her body when she stumbled into bed at 2am the previous night. She closed her eyes for a few minutes and maybe as a reward for the work she had done the days before sleep came to her with ease.

Emma woke up with a jolt when the ringtone of her phone blared out into the quiet atmosphere. She picked up the phone and pressed the green call icon and the loudspeaker option.

Lincoln’s voice filled the room a second later, “Alpha Emma, there’s a problem.” Emma sat up and kicked the covers off her body “Well what is it?” she asked just as worried as she felt by Lincoln’s voice.

“Alan Baker has escaped.”

Hours later it was concluded that Alan Baker was not a rogue. Emma’s previous interrogation led her to believe that he saw a spy along with the silent manner he escaped from his cell. The news of an escapee was limited only to the elders of the pack, the former leaders and Emma’s Beta and Gamma.

With strict orders from the Alpha herself they were all told to keep the information to themselves and not to share it to the public for their safety. Currently she was with her father who was particularly alarmed at the escape of the captured rogue.

“Why haven’t you ordered a search party for the man that escaped?” her father asked again for the second time after Emma had pretended to ignore him. Emma sighed and gulped the entire glass of whiskey her father had poured out for her.

She loved her parents to death which meant that she would do anything they asked of her to make them satisfied and happy with her. But when she was crowned Alpha of the pack she soon realized that doing all they asked of her would be impossible reason being because it went against what she believed or it would seem extravagant to the pack members.

One of those instances was now, Alan Baker was a spy sent to gather information on the pack no doubt. With an organization backing him it would be purely futile to send out a search party for a man whose trail was practically non-existent the moment he stepped foot outside the pack’s borders.

Emma could see that, she just wondered why her father couldn’t. She replied him, “Because it would be useless Dad.”

Her father tsked in disagreement, “You won’t know that until you try”

By the tone of his voice, Emma could speculate that he would soon go into one of those fits when he claimed that she hardly ever listened to him. Not in the mood to be a recipient of that attitude she stood to her feet and thanked her father for the drink, “Thanks for the drink Dad, but I’ve got important things to do.”

Somewhere on the planet Earth

Alan Baker put the papers he was going to submit to his Boss together. A few hours ago he was in a cell contemplating his life choices, now he was back to the place closest to home – he was back at his company’s building. The very place he was trained to become the man he was.

At the familiar clicking of heels he stood to his feet to pay respect to his Boss, Jenny Wolffe. She was a middle-aged woman that only cared about getting the job done, frankly if you lost an arm or a leg in a failed mission she didn’t care one bit neither would she give the tiniest bit of sympathy.

“You did a good job Alan, I’m glad you didn’t mess this one up,” she said her thin lips stretching in a genuine smile. Alan mumbled, “Thanks” and shook the hand that she outstretched.

“The higher ups will take your report now,” she stated showing him the door that she had just walked out of. Alan adjusted his shirt and tightened his fingers around the file he was holding.

The guard stationed at the door opened the door for him and he stepped in with all the confidence he had. To his surprise all the sacred higher-ups were wearing fanciful masks, it took everything in him to not ask if he was missing something.

He took the only empty seat on the round table and put the document in front of him. The closest person to him grabbed the document and passed it to the masked person at the head of the table.

The person at the head of the table removed the contents of the file and skimmed through it. “Tell us something we don’t know about this female Alpha.”

Trained to not stutter or break under pressure he immediately replied, “She’s very clever sir and she’s very observant. She was able to point out that I wasn’t a rogue like they thought I was at first contact.”

“First contact?” one of the masked females asked.

“Yes,” Alan replied. “And if I may say she’s diligent and intuitive about everything around her. She seemed perfect except for her mate-less situation.”

“So what are you saying Alan?” asked another one of the masked female. Alan felt like his answer would determine an important part of what they had planned, nevertheless he gave what he thought was the best answer.

“I’m saying that we could get more if we distract her with a mate or at least someone who she might have interest in.”

Murmurs broke out among them at the end of his statement. He was right, his answer was going to help them decide their next line of action.

The man who held the file snapped his fingers and immediately silence returned to the room. “Then it’s time we let Emmaline Stone meet her mate.”
