Chapter 5

Alan Baker worked as a spy for a top secret organization run by ghost individuals, people with enough power and wealth to buy countries. As far as he knew this people got anything they wanted even if it meant sacrificing a few lives. Fortunately, Alan’s department was that, he was what you would call an Informationist, in his case he dealt with collection of information by directly relating with the targeted person just like he did with Emma.

Since the time he had spent working at the organization, he had never questioned the decisions his Boss made or the missions he was assigned to. But things were taking a change in his mind as the topic of Alpha Emmaline remained in his mind.

He found it hard to believe that all they wanted to take from her was her title as Alpha of The Golden Wolves Pack. He was of the opinion that they were after so much more. But he couldn’t ask around or else he will be under suspicion by the firm and that was far worse than any punishment.

His mind went back to the conversation he had with the man they identified as Emma’s mate after he was dismissed from the meeting with the higher-ups. His name was Caleb Jalvin and if he had to guess he’d be around the same age as Emma but what really baffled him was how anxious the guy seemed to be on taking Emma’s title.

It had led him to ask the question, “Aren’t you concerned that she’s your mate?”

Caleb looked at him like he asked the most stupid question on the planet and answered mechanically, “Emmaline Stone is just a woman I happen to share a connection with and it isn’t going to stop me from doing my assignment.”

It was at that moment that Alan knew that there was something more to Emmaline Stone that only Caleb and the higher-ups were aware of.

******

Three days had passed since Emmaline Stone took the unconscious man to the house at the far edge of the pack territory. She didn’t take him to the pack’s clinic because she wasn’t sure how the news would be received that she found her mate at the brink of death outside pack territory.

And she hadn’t told anyone yet, not her parents and not even her best friend Lincoln.

Emma viciously stared at the clock mounted on the wall in her office, they were a bunch of documents that needed her attention right in front of her but she couldn’t focus on them instead she was counting down the minutes until she would leave under a guise to inspect an ongoing construction so that she could see her mate.

It was hard to believe at first, like after the first night she helped the man. The thought kept ringing in her head and she found it hard to get some sleep. The next day when she went to check on him, realization fully sunk in and she cried tears of joy because she finally had what she had long been waiting for.

Now she didn’t want to do anything but stay at his side to make sure that she was the first person he would see when he work up from his coma. She shut down the laptop in front of her deciding to round up an hour earlier than the time she promised herself earlier in the morning.

Lincoln opened the door to her office and walked in with even more files in his hand. Emma resisted the urge to groan as he noisily dumped them on her table.

“Where are you going?” he asked in suspicion. Emma ignored him and continued packing the bag she prepared earlier in the morning. “Is everything okay? You’ve been kind of slow on work.”

Emma sighed, Lincoln was right it was unlike her to let work spill over to the next day. Normally she’d tackle it out even after midnight if she had to but now she was cutting things halfway to meet her mate that was still unconscious.

Guilt attacked her as she stared at Lincoln’s worried expression, she knew without a doubt that he would be hurt if he found out later but for now…it was best no one knew.

“I’m going to be out for a while,” Emma made Lincoln know, after adjusting the strap of the bag on her left shoulder she added, “Just leave everything on my desk I’ll come back to handle them.”

Lincoln furrowed his eyebrows and watched Emma leave the side of her table. The last time she had acted this standoffish to him was when she stained her dress on her period and that was more than ten years ago because they were about 12 years old.

It wasn’t until she reached the door that Lincoln found his voice to ask once more, “Is everything okay Alpha?”

Emma smiled and faced Lincoln, “Nothing has ever been better Linc.”

Twenty minutes later Emma arrived at the small cabin she used to hang out with her friends when they needed space away from everyone because being a teenager and being reminded of your future duties was tasking enough.

“Good old days,” she murmured to herself as she pushed in the key to the lock of the door so that she could unlock it. She couldn’t take the risk of leaving the door unlocked so that her mate wouldn’t wander out into the pack when he woke up. The pack members and security might think he was an intruder when he really wasn’t.

If that happened she’d have to make explanations that she didn’t want to, so the safer option for both of them was to keep the door locked whenever she left him.

The door made a click sound and Emma pulled down on the door knob, she opened the door and stepped inside swiftly closing it shut gently behind her.

From across the room sparkling green eyes stared back at her. And like as if she was in a daze she whispered, “You’re awake.”
