Chapter 1

Damon Shadow was the strongest in the Shadow pack. He was the Alpha.

However, he had a peculiar reaction whenever I came near. His muscles would stiffen, his breathing would become shallow, and he would sometimes retch.

We had been to countless hospitals, but none of them could help.

Finally, the High Priest of the Moon Goddess Temple, Jasper Lane, gave a diagnosis. According to him, it was a miswired fated mate bond.

He said, "This happens once in ten thousand years. You're indeed a fated pair, but the bond had formed incorrectly. Damon's body instinctively rejects you, yet his wolf cannot leave you.

"Forcing a separation would strip Damon of his wolf within three months, possibly killing him. The only solution is to maintain the bond and let time slowly repair it."

"How long will it take?" I asked.

Jasper shook his head. "Maybe a year, maybe ten, or maybe a lifetime."

At that moment, I should've understood that our marriage had been a curse from the start.

Damon couldn't live without me, yet he loathed me. And I loved him enough to become his remedy.

For six years, we kept a marriage without physical contact, except during unavoidable heat cycles.

His wolf needed my presence to remain stable, but his body couldn't endure my closeness.

On the sixth anniversary of our marking, I found out I was pregnant.

The two lines on the test froze me for a long moment.

This pup was a miracle, conceived during the last heat period.

The doctor said, "Ms. Stone, congratulations. You're having twins. Both pups have strong heartbeats, but your body is too weak to support them. Don't strain yourself, don't overstimulate, and avoid overexertion.

"Also, your estrogen levels are unstable. Avoid using suppressants for now and let your body regulate naturally."

I stood at the hospital entrance, clutching the ultrasound report. I stared at it for a long time.

Maybe this was a gift from the Moon Goddess.

Maybe the arrival of the pups could fix the broken bond between us.

I sold the last keepsake my mother had left me, an old brooch. The jeweler said it wasn't worth much and gave me only 300 dollars.

It was enough to get me across three thousand miles to see Damon.

I also stopped by a craft shop, where I bought the softest cashmere yarn. I was planning to knit tiny socks for the pups myself.

I even prepared a bouquet of his favorite moonflowers.

My wolf stirred restlessly, as if warning me of something, but I assumed it was just a typical pregnancy symptom.

Then, I saw it at the entrance of the Overseas Alliance headquarters. Damon was crouched in front of a she-wolf, carefully removing her rain-drenched boots.

His movements were gentle and focused.

I had never seen him like this in six years.

He wiped the mud off her calves and even laid his coat under her feet.

Rain soaked his clothes, yet he smiled warmly.

At that moment, I realized the so-called rejection syndrome might never have been an illness at all.

It was simply the most direct way his body could tell me he didn't love me.

I stood in the downpour, holding the bouquet of moonflowers. I had only finished knitting one of the little socks; the other ball of yarn rolled to my feet.

A sudden pain ripped through my lower abdomen, sharp and tearing.

I gritted my teeth and braced the wall with one hand. With my other hand, I protected my belly.

"Sweethearts, don't be afraid... I'm here…" I murmured. Sweat and rain mingled on my cheeks, impossible to tell apart.

After a long moment, Damon noticed me standing in the rain.

He tucked away his smile, spoke briefly to the she-wolf, and then approached with an umbrella.

He didn't shield me with it, though. Instead, he frowned and stopped three steps away.

"What are you doing here?"

He instinctively stepped back half a pace, his throat convulsing—it was the familiar rejection reflex that always flared when he came near me.

I took a deep breath and forced a smile. "Happy sixth anniversary."

I handed him the moonflowers, reaching with my other hand into my bag for the ultrasound report. "Damon, I have something very important to tell you—"

Before I could finish, the she-wolf's voice broke through softly.

"Damon, I feel so dizzy…"

Damon's face changed instantly. He immediately spun around.

"Ella!" he shouted and strode back to support her. His eyes were full of worry.

I stilled, and my hands were frozen in mid-air. The ultrasound report was still in my bag.

The bouquet slipped from my hand and got drenched.

Damon glanced back at me, annoyed. "Go back. Don't cause me trouble."

Ella Zimmer, whom he was cradling in his arms, said gently, "Damon, it's my birthday today. If she has something to say, why rush her away?"

I stood rooted to the spot, stunned by the display of their intimacy.

Then Damon's irritated voice rang out once more. "What are you standing there for? Don't you know how to walk on your own?"

By the time I snapped out of it, they were already at the car. Rain poured down, yet Damon's umbrella kept it from touching her.

I bent down to gather the flowers and saw that rain and careless feet had already flattened half the petals.

"No! I didn't!" Ella screamed in denial, backing away with every word. From my sleeve, I pulled out a small, clear vial.Inside was a liquid extracted from the carpet residue in the lounge that day.I shook the vial. "The High Priest has already tested it. It's wolfsbane extract that was mixed into the drinks. Just a whiff of this is enough to cause severe hemorrhaging in a vulnerable pregnant body."The crowd erupted instantly."Monstrous!""Poisoning the offspring of a descendant of the red-gold bloodline!""Death penalty! She must die!"Ella collapsed completely to the ground.Damon, who had been dragged to the doorway, had heard it all. He struggled to lift his head. His eyes were fixed on Ella and almost bulging out. "It was you…"His voice cracked as he spat blood foam from his mouth. "You killed my pups?"Seeing that her scheme had been exposed, Ella stopped pretending. She rose from the floor and spat at Damon. "If it weren't for your useless indecision and refusal t

Three days were enough to turn the Shadow pack upside down. The once-dominant Alpha, Damon, was now confined to a cell. He was haggard and hollow-eyed.Meanwhile, I stayed on the top floor of the Elder Council, surrounded by every mark of honor. The annulment ceremony was set for noon, when the sun was at its peak.I donned a red-gold robe, which was an heirloom from my mother. It was worn only by generations of successors. The elders escorted me to the altar with utmost reverence.Beneath the altar, the pack members crowded around. Their gazes were filled with awe—and something bordering on fanaticism.Damon was brought forward, flanked by two werewolves. In just three days, he looked ten years older. The commanding presence he had once carried as the Alpha was gone. His face was sunken, and his stubble was unkempt.Ella followed behind him. She was pale, but she clung to her composure.Damon's eyes flickered when they landed on me. "Selena…"He tried to step forward, but

I stood and pulled the tiny blood-stained sock from my bag. "Six weeks. Twins."My voice was calm and flat. "I had originally planned to tell him the good news. But at the headquarters of the Overseas Alliance, I saw him kneeling before another woman. He was helping her take off her boots."And then, at her birthday party, I miscarried. He sent me to the restroom to clean up with disdain in his eyes. He called my pain and suffering a pathetic act."Damon's face drained of color as his body swayed.Ella laughed suddenly. "Damon, you can't seriously believe her, can you?"She grabbed his arm and continued, "She's making it up! Who knows if those pups were even yours? A fragile little Omega like her could never carry an Alpha's pups."I looked at Ella, and my eyes blazed with molten gold. "What did you just say?"Ella was startled by the fire in my gaze and instinctively took a step back. However, she quickly recovered, lifting her chin defiantly. "Am I wrong? Damon hasn't even tou

The pack's Elder Council sat deep in the heart of the Shadow Forest.I followed the path guided by the crows. The ancient trees leaned to one side as if sensing my presence. Their branches lowered as a gesture of submission to my bloodline. The guards at the gates froze when they saw me, then dropped to one knee.I frowned but didn't speak, pushing open the heavy oak doors without hesitation.Inside, seven elders awaited. The head elder, David Jones, rose. His cloudy eyes were fixed on me for a long, measured moment."Let me see your eyes," he said, his voice heavy with age and authority.I lifted my head, no longer suppressing the power within me.Golden-red light surged from my pupils, flooding the hall. All the elders rose at once, stunned into silence."Red-gold bloodline…" David's voice trembled. "It's true! The Moon Goddess above… The last of the lost red-gold wolves…""No wonder Damon was forced to mark her all those years ago! It was her bloodline calling to him!" an

The storm outside the car window finally began to fade. I leaned back in my seat. I felt as though I had been thrown into a furnace.A molten, reddish-gold light surged from deep within my pupils, spreading through my veins, suffusing every inch of me. My bones shifted, tiny cracks echoing with each rearrangement. I bit down hard, and my nails dug into the seat's armrest, splintering the wood beneath. The driver flinched at the rearview mirror. "Ma'am… your eyes…""Don't worry about me."My voice was hoarse, low, and feral.Pain surged through me, sharper and deeper than anything I had felt during the miscarriage. However, this time, I could feel a long-dormant power stirring within me, breaking free of every chain that had bound it.For six years, I had thought myself fragile, but it had never been my own frailty. Something had been suppressing me all along. At three in the morning, the car stopped at the apartment I'd rented. I paid the driver and stumbled out.My phone buzz

Only after confirming that Ella was fine did Damon look at me again. The scent of wine was overpowering now—so strong that whatever trace of strangeness he'd caught earlier was completely drowned out."Next time you get your period, say something. Ella can't stand the smell of blood."With a frown, he glanced at the dark stain spreading across the floor and added, "Go to the restroom and clean yourself up. Don't ruin the carpet here."The undisguised disgust in his voice cut into me like a blade.Damon didn't even bother smelling the blood on the floor again. In his mind, I had always been weak. Irregular periods were normal, and there was always some minor ailment or ache to contend with. For six years, he had grown used to my weakness. So, even as I bled in front of him, it never once crossed his mind that I was losing the two pups we had created together.Ella hid behind him. She was holding a handkerchief over her nose, and she looked like she might faint. However, in the
