Chapter 2

مؤلف: Saltwater Fish
I slid into the passenger seat.

In the rearview mirror, Damon was pressing a hand to Ella's forehead. His touch was so gentle that it made my chest tighten.

They were speaking in Old Wolf Tongue in low voices, but I understood every word.

Ella's voice held a note of curiosity. "Is she your mate in the pack? Her scent is strange. Suppressed, almost. You two don't match well."

Damon paused. His tone was indifferent. "It doesn't matter if we're a good match. What matters is that we're compatible. Besides, she's just a nominal mate."

They thought I couldn't understand what they were saying.

However, six years ago, I had learned Old Wolf Tongue for him.

I closed my eyes, hands clutching the ultrasound report in my bag.

The edges of the paper were damp with my sweat.

A clawing pain tore through my lower abdomen, as if something were ripping inside me.

I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to stay silent.

When we reached our destination, one of Damon's friends opened the car door for me.

"Selena, you look terrible. Are you okay?" the friend asked, startled. "And you're soaked through. Damon, why didn't you get her anything to change into?"

Only then did Damon notice my condition.

He frowned, as if just remembering I existed. "Wait in the car. I'll get you something to wear."

I sat alone in the car. Rain was dripping from my hair onto the seat.

The pain in my lower abdomen came in waves, each one stronger than the last. I curled in on myself, both hands cradling my belly.

20 minutes later, Damon returned holding a luxury shopping bag. The designer logo was glaring.

I knew better than to see his brief concern as a change of heart. He was only being nice because Ella had invited me along.

He didn't want a disheveled woman causing trouble at Ella's birthday party.

"Change into this," Damon said, handing me the bag. He stayed three steps away, as if I carried a contagion.

The car door then slammed shut behind him. I was left with the sight of him walking away with Ella.

After changing and stepping outside, I received a message on my phone.

The text read, "It's Ella's birthday today. I went ahead. The private room is on the 16th floor."

It was the longest message he had sent me in six years.

When I found the private room, I paused at the door and took the ultrasound report out of my bag.

I was about to push the door open when a cheer drifted out first.

I froze instinctively.

Through the narrow gap in the door, I saw Damon handing Ella a bouquet of silvermoon flowers and a delicate gift box.

Silvermoon flowers were meant for one's lifelong love.

"Silvermoon flowers aren't even in season. Where did you get them?" someone asked in bafflement.

"Do you even need to ask? If Ella wants something, Damon would move heaven and earth to get it."

"Exactly. You clearly still love Ella. Why did you mark someone else?"

"Everyone knows he came to the Overseas Alliance for Ella. Her leaving the country back then was just a misunderstanding. Since they love each other, why not be together again?"

"And Ella's abusive former mate has been sent into exile. No obstacles now."

Damon didn't contradict them. He just smiled. His eyes were soft as they rested on Ella.

"Some flowers bloom only for certain people," he murmured.

I stood outside the private room. I was still clutching the ultrasound report.

My sweat was making the paper crumple.

In the mirrored surface of the private room door, my reflection looked pale, and my lips were colorless. The ill-fitting dress made me look even more haggard. I offered a stark contrast to Ella, who was glowing amid the crowd.

Suddenly, a sharper pain ripped through my belly.

I gritted my teeth and tried to turn away.

However, my legs wobbled beneath me. I lost my balance and stumbled straight through the private room door.

"No! I didn't!" Ella screamed in denial, backing away with every word. From my sleeve, I pulled out a small, clear vial.Inside was a liquid extracted from the carpet residue in the lounge that day.I shook the vial. "The High Priest has already tested it. It's wolfsbane extract that was mixed into the drinks. Just a whiff of this is enough to cause severe hemorrhaging in a vulnerable pregnant body."The crowd erupted instantly."Monstrous!""Poisoning the offspring of a descendant of the red-gold bloodline!""Death penalty! She must die!"Ella collapsed completely to the ground.Damon, who had been dragged to the doorway, had heard it all. He struggled to lift his head. His eyes were fixed on Ella and almost bulging out. "It was you…"His voice cracked as he spat blood foam from his mouth. "You killed my pups?"Seeing that her scheme had been exposed, Ella stopped pretending. She rose from the floor and spat at Damon. "If it weren't for your useless indecision and refusal t

Three days were enough to turn the Shadow pack upside down. The once-dominant Alpha, Damon, was now confined to a cell. He was haggard and hollow-eyed.Meanwhile, I stayed on the top floor of the Elder Council, surrounded by every mark of honor. The annulment ceremony was set for noon, when the sun was at its peak.I donned a red-gold robe, which was an heirloom from my mother. It was worn only by generations of successors. The elders escorted me to the altar with utmost reverence.Beneath the altar, the pack members crowded around. Their gazes were filled with awe—and something bordering on fanaticism.Damon was brought forward, flanked by two werewolves. In just three days, he looked ten years older. The commanding presence he had once carried as the Alpha was gone. His face was sunken, and his stubble was unkempt.Ella followed behind him. She was pale, but she clung to her composure.Damon's eyes flickered when they landed on me. "Selena…"He tried to step forward, but

I stood and pulled the tiny blood-stained sock from my bag. "Six weeks. Twins."My voice was calm and flat. "I had originally planned to tell him the good news. But at the headquarters of the Overseas Alliance, I saw him kneeling before another woman. He was helping her take off her boots."And then, at her birthday party, I miscarried. He sent me to the restroom to clean up with disdain in his eyes. He called my pain and suffering a pathetic act."Damon's face drained of color as his body swayed.Ella laughed suddenly. "Damon, you can't seriously believe her, can you?"She grabbed his arm and continued, "She's making it up! Who knows if those pups were even yours? A fragile little Omega like her could never carry an Alpha's pups."I looked at Ella, and my eyes blazed with molten gold. "What did you just say?"Ella was startled by the fire in my gaze and instinctively took a step back. However, she quickly recovered, lifting her chin defiantly. "Am I wrong? Damon hasn't even tou

The pack's Elder Council sat deep in the heart of the Shadow Forest.I followed the path guided by the crows. The ancient trees leaned to one side as if sensing my presence. Their branches lowered as a gesture of submission to my bloodline. The guards at the gates froze when they saw me, then dropped to one knee.I frowned but didn't speak, pushing open the heavy oak doors without hesitation.Inside, seven elders awaited. The head elder, David Jones, rose. His cloudy eyes were fixed on me for a long, measured moment."Let me see your eyes," he said, his voice heavy with age and authority.I lifted my head, no longer suppressing the power within me.Golden-red light surged from my pupils, flooding the hall. All the elders rose at once, stunned into silence."Red-gold bloodline…" David's voice trembled. "It's true! The Moon Goddess above… The last of the lost red-gold wolves…""No wonder Damon was forced to mark her all those years ago! It was her bloodline calling to him!" an

The storm outside the car window finally began to fade. I leaned back in my seat. I felt as though I had been thrown into a furnace.A molten, reddish-gold light surged from deep within my pupils, spreading through my veins, suffusing every inch of me. My bones shifted, tiny cracks echoing with each rearrangement. I bit down hard, and my nails dug into the seat's armrest, splintering the wood beneath. The driver flinched at the rearview mirror. "Ma'am… your eyes…""Don't worry about me."My voice was hoarse, low, and feral.Pain surged through me, sharper and deeper than anything I had felt during the miscarriage. However, this time, I could feel a long-dormant power stirring within me, breaking free of every chain that had bound it.For six years, I had thought myself fragile, but it had never been my own frailty. Something had been suppressing me all along. At three in the morning, the car stopped at the apartment I'd rented. I paid the driver and stumbled out.My phone buzz

Only after confirming that Ella was fine did Damon look at me again. The scent of wine was overpowering now—so strong that whatever trace of strangeness he'd caught earlier was completely drowned out."Next time you get your period, say something. Ella can't stand the smell of blood."With a frown, he glanced at the dark stain spreading across the floor and added, "Go to the restroom and clean yourself up. Don't ruin the carpet here."The undisguised disgust in his voice cut into me like a blade.Damon didn't even bother smelling the blood on the floor again. In his mind, I had always been weak. Irregular periods were normal, and there was always some minor ailment or ache to contend with. For six years, he had grown used to my weakness. So, even as I bled in front of him, it never once crossed his mind that I was losing the two pups we had created together.Ella hid behind him. She was holding a handkerchief over her nose, and she looked like she might faint. However, in the
