Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Circle Master
Kate was radiant up on the stage.

She wore the gown Cole had made to measure for her, every inch of her preening like a peacock.

When she noticed me watching, her fingers drifted instinctively to the moonstone at her chest — a small territorial gesture.

Cole caught me looking at her and rushed over, anxious.

"Wendy, don't bother with her."

"When we hold our ceremony, I'll have something even better made for you."

Before I could say a word, Kate made her way to my side.

Her head was bowed, every trace of superiority gone.

She shrank behind Cole as though frightened, peering out from behind his shoulder, eyes wet.

"Wendy, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize how much this necklace meant to you. I'll take it off right now."

I could see from the way she fumbled with the clasp that she had no intention of actually returning it.

But I wasn't going to interrupt her performance.

In the end, it was Cole who stepped in and stopped her hands.

"Don't. Wendy's not petty."

"What's given is given."

As though he wasn't sure that was enough, Cole pitched his voice so the whole room could hear, turning to Kate.

"That necklace is my ceremony gift to you. Wear it well. It stands for the love between us, faithful and unshakeable."

The corners of Kate's mouth curved upward.

Her fingers tightened around the moonstone.

The timid look she'd aimed at me a moment ago was gone, replaced by something self-satisfied.

The crowd around me broke into applause.

"Finally! They're bonded at last!"

"Cole and Kate, childhood sweethearts, what a love story. I'm so envious."

"With an Alpha and a Luna like this, our pack is going to thrive."

Cole's brow creased. He moved quickly to my side, lowering his voice.

"Wendy, don't listen to them."

"You'll be Luna of my pack. You know that. Everything I'm doing right now — I'm just playing along for Kate's sake."

When I didn't respond, he grew more urgent.

"Wendy, there's nothing between me and Kate."

"She's just someone I grew up with. I couldn't bear the thought of her dying with regrets."

I watched his face — the anxious set of it — and something strange stirred in me.

I had said it early on: the bonding ceremony was everything to me.

Blood Moon Pack held purity of heart and character above all else, and as its princess I had been raised on that belief.

When I found out Cole was my fated mate, I had been terrified, because I already knew about Kate.

But what had Cole told me back then?

He said his love for me was absolute, that it would never waver.

He gave me everything he had.

He sent Kate away to another pack so I wouldn't have to worry.

When I was badly ill, he climbed a cliff face to pick medicinal herbs, coming back bloodied and bruised.

To help me recover, he fought the most dangerous beast in the territory just to bring back a bowl of its blood.

And then, at the very moment I trusted him completely and was ready to give myself to him — Cole chose Kate as his ceremony partner without a second's hesitation.

I was about to leave when the crowd's chanting came at me from every direction.

"Alpha, why aren't you kissing your mate? Are you shy?"

I stared at him. Held his gaze.

He was awkward at first. But the moment he caught Kate's hopeful eyes, he kissed her without hesitation.

I drained the rest of my champagne in one swallow, then called over one of my people.

Earlier, to satisfy Cole's fragile ego, I had personally arranged with the Alliance chairman to grant his pack the exclusive privileges that only Blood Moon Pack was entitled to.

First-purchase rights. Priority bidding on resources. Sacred Spring access.

All of it just to make him feel like he could stand at my level.

But now he had taken all of it for granted — and apparently felt entitled to trample my dignity in front of everyone.

"Publish an announcement that Cole has completed his bonding ceremony. Make sure every member of the Alliance knows his mate is not me."

"Tell the Alliance chairman: revoke every one of Cole's privileges. Effective immediately."

Everyone was watching Kate hold court in the middle of the room, and they were shaking their heads.Someone nearby took pity on her and spoke up."Kate, you shouldn't have come. Are you really trying to embarrass yourself?"Kate didn't follow."Embarrass myself? Wendy's the embarrassment here. She wanted him and couldn't have him, and she's been pulling every cheap trick she knows.""What does any of this have to do with me?"I took a slow sip of champagne and glanced at Cole."All right, everyone. You know the situation.""It's time to pick a side. Cole's, or mine.""Don't forget — I'm known for my cheap trick."I let the last words linger. Kate lifted her chin, certain the room would tip toward her. It didn't.Every single person moved to stand behind me.Kate looked around, confused. She walked up to one of the people she recognized."Why are you standing behind her?""Don't forget, your pack has been using hides from ours this whole time.""And you!""Without our pack's supplies, h

When I got back to Blood Moon Pack and saw my parents, I lost it.Tears came without warning, without permission. They were alive. My parents were alive. Everyone in my pack was safe and happy.Seeing me cry, my parents pulled me into their arms the way they used to when I was small. My mother's voice was soft."I heard everything, baby. Don't be sad.""There are so many good people out there. It's okay."I shook my head. These weren't tears of grief. I was overwhelmed with relief — it had nothing to do with Cole.I wiped my face and looked at her."Mom, would you and Dad support me no matter what I did?"That clearly wasn't what she had been expecting. She looked at me with worried eyes, assuming I was still hurting over Cole."Wendy, don't do anything you'll regret. Cole has a mate now.""No, Mom. What I want right now is Cole's pack.""What do you mean?"My mother's face was pure bewilderment. But my father, beside her, let out a low, delighted laugh and shot me an approving look.T

"What do you mean?"I turned a strand of hair around my finger, completely at ease."I mean you and I are done. This life, next life — not happening.""And your pack won't survive the winter."Cole looked at me, shock moving across his face. Then it curdled into something cold and furious."Wendy.""Stop this.""I held a ceremony. That's it.""I never said I was done with you."I cut him off, my voice light."Watch your words, Cole.""Werewolves are loyal to one person their whole lives. I honestly can't imagine being the person on your mind while you were up there with Kate.""That's disgusting.""And for the record — you're not walking away from me. I'm walking away from you."Cole took two steps back. Kate was the first to read his expression. She pressed a hand to her chest, breathing hard."Wendy, what are you two talking about?""I knew you weren't here to bless us."A pack member turned on me."Wendy! Kate is already our Luna.""You've got no shot anymore. Trying to hold resourc

Of course Kate didn't want me to.I had come to hold the ceremony with Cole, showing Blood Moon Pack's finest — my best jewelry, my best gems. Along with three years' worth of supplies for his pack that they hadn't come close to using up.Kate had her eye on every last crate of those jewels, and she knew it.Catching herself, Kate pulled back the outburst and steadied her voice. She slipped back into the fragile, sickly act."Wendy... I had no idea you were like this.""So all the support you gave us — it was only ever because you wanted to be Luna of this pack.""If I'd known... we never would have accepted any of it."The pack members around her started picking it up."God, if we'd known, we would have sent it all back.""A woman this calculating — our poor Luna Kate."Kate listened to the voices around her, the corners of her mouth rising despite herself. She turned back to me, her expression all suffering."But Wendy... you can't force love.""It's not something you can buy.""Was

The shouting from the pack pressed in on all sides. The crowd surrounded me, hurling every ugly word they had.I was just about to leave when someone's hand shot out and grabbed my arm.A man's voice, loud enough to rattle the walls."You're not going anywhere.""If Luna Kate suffers any harm because of you, you will answer for it."His words dropped a sudden quiet over the group. Then they all moved at once.Someone wrenched my hair back. Someone else pinned my arms."How dare you go after Luna Kate.""You're coming to the pack hospital right now.""If anything happens to Luna Kate, you're not leaving."By the time we reached the hospital, Kate was already in bed, looking fragile against the white sheets.Cole was beside her, stroking her hair. From a distance, they looked exactly like two people the Moon Goddess had meant for each other. When Cole noticed me, every bit of softness left his face."Wendy! How do you have the nerve to show up here?""Do you have any idea how close she c

When the crowd's noise died down a little, I glanced over at Kate. She was leaning against Cole, content and glowing, soaking up the congratulations flowing in from every side.I walked over too, my voice even."Congratulations."But the moment I moved toward her, Cole stepped instinctively in front of Kate. That reflex — that shielding of her from me — landed like a blow. What had I ever done to make Cole this defensive, this convinced that the next thing I'd do was hurt her?A bitter smile crossed my face."Relax, Cole. I mean it."A mess of emotions moved through Cole's eyes.I could see both impulses at war in him: the urge to apologize for what had just happened with Kate, and the instinct to keep his guard up in case I did something reckless. But right now, all I wanted was to hold on to the last shred of dignity between us.To say a proper goodbye to this damn love.I reached for a fresh glass from the tray beside me. I swirled the champagne in my glass, smiling like the sun.Cole blinked. Something flickered in his expression, and then he let go of my wrist. The fury that had been written all over his face a moment ago shifted into something uncertain, almost awkward. He cleared his throat twice and apologized f
