Chapter 3

Author: Circle Master
When the crowd's noise died down a little, I glanced over at Kate.

She was leaning against Cole, content and glowing, soaking up the congratulations flowing in from every side.

I walked over too, my voice even.

"Congratulations."

But the moment I moved toward her, Cole stepped instinctively in front of Kate.

That reflex — that shielding of her from me — landed like a blow.

What had I ever done to make Cole this defensive, this convinced that the next thing I'd do was hurt her?

A bitter smile crossed my face.

"Relax, Cole. I mean it."

A mess of emotions moved through Cole's eyes.

I could see both impulses at war in him: the urge to apologize for what had just happened with Kate, and the instinct to keep his guard up in case I did something reckless.

But right now, all I wanted was to hold on to the last shred of dignity between us.

To say a proper goodbye to this damn love.

I reached for a fresh glass from the tray beside me. I hadn't even opened my mouth yet when I felt a hard shove from behind and stumbled forward.

The champagne flew from my hand and hit the floor. Kate screamed.

Cole threw himself in front of her and turned on me with hatred in his eyes.

Without asking a single question, he picked up a glass and drenched me with it.

"Wendy! Why would you do that to Kate?"

"She hasn't done anything wrong!"

"Maybe it's time you took a hard look at yourself and that jealousy of yours."

Kate was buried in Cole's arms, crying in great heaving sobs, looking like she had suffered some tremendous injustice.

"Wendy... what did I do to deserve this?"

"Why are you trying to ruin my ceremony?"

Before she could finish, the color drained from her face and she went limp.

Cole shook her, cursing me in a steady torrent.

"Wendy! I told you she was fragile!"

"If anything happens to her, we're done — you and me, finished."

"And your pack will never see a single piece of hide from ours again."

"I never thought you'd turn out to be this jealous."

Cole walked out without a backward glance, Kate in his arms.

Just before they disappeared, Kate opened her eyes.

The second her gaze met mine, her lips moved in a small, deliberate smirk.

It looked like: “You little bitch. Cole is mine.”

Then came the voices of Cole's pack members, closing in around me.

"We always knew the Alpha had some obsessed admirer."

"Has to be her. Deliberately trying to ruin their happiness."

"Look at her. Like Cole would ever leave sweet Kate for someone like that. You vicious witch!"

"Get out of our pack."

I pulled myself upright and looked around at all of them.

Three chances, Cole. You'd used every single one.

I had been willing to keep things civil. Since he'd chosen otherwise, he and his entire pack could answer for it together.

I sent a pack-wide message:

[All resource exchanges with Cole's pack are hereby suspended. Any pack that accepts resources from Cole's pack will be considered an enemy of Blood Moon Pack.]

Blood Moon Pack had never been short of resources. I had accepted Cole's exchanges only to make him believe our relationship stood on equal ground.

I hadn't wanted him to feel inferior.

Since he no longer needed that from me, I had every confidence he could manage his little remote pack just fine on his own.

Everyone was watching Kate hold court in the middle of the room, and they were shaking their heads.Someone nearby took pity on her and spoke up."Kate, you shouldn't have come. Are you really trying to embarrass yourself?"Kate didn't follow."Embarrass myself? Wendy's the embarrassment here. She wanted him and couldn't have him, and she's been pulling every cheap trick she knows.""What does any of this have to do with me?"I took a slow sip of champagne and glanced at Cole."All right, everyone. You know the situation.""It's time to pick a side. Cole's, or mine.""Don't forget — I'm known for my cheap trick."I let the last words linger. Kate lifted her chin, certain the room would tip toward her. It didn't.Every single person moved to stand behind me.Kate looked around, confused. She walked up to one of the people she recognized."Why are you standing behind her?""Don't forget, your pack has been using hides from ours this whole time.""And you!""Without our pack's supplies, h

When I got back to Blood Moon Pack and saw my parents, I lost it.Tears came without warning, without permission. They were alive. My parents were alive. Everyone in my pack was safe and happy.Seeing me cry, my parents pulled me into their arms the way they used to when I was small. My mother's voice was soft."I heard everything, baby. Don't be sad.""There are so many good people out there. It's okay."I shook my head. These weren't tears of grief. I was overwhelmed with relief — it had nothing to do with Cole.I wiped my face and looked at her."Mom, would you and Dad support me no matter what I did?"That clearly wasn't what she had been expecting. She looked at me with worried eyes, assuming I was still hurting over Cole."Wendy, don't do anything you'll regret. Cole has a mate now.""No, Mom. What I want right now is Cole's pack.""What do you mean?"My mother's face was pure bewilderment. But my father, beside her, let out a low, delighted laugh and shot me an approving look.T

"What do you mean?"I turned a strand of hair around my finger, completely at ease."I mean you and I are done. This life, next life — not happening.""And your pack won't survive the winter."Cole looked at me, shock moving across his face. Then it curdled into something cold and furious."Wendy.""Stop this.""I held a ceremony. That's it.""I never said I was done with you."I cut him off, my voice light."Watch your words, Cole.""Werewolves are loyal to one person their whole lives. I honestly can't imagine being the person on your mind while you were up there with Kate.""That's disgusting.""And for the record — you're not walking away from me. I'm walking away from you."Cole took two steps back. Kate was the first to read his expression. She pressed a hand to her chest, breathing hard."Wendy, what are you two talking about?""I knew you weren't here to bless us."A pack member turned on me."Wendy! Kate is already our Luna.""You've got no shot anymore. Trying to hold resourc

Of course Kate didn't want me to.I had come to hold the ceremony with Cole, showing Blood Moon Pack's finest — my best jewelry, my best gems. Along with three years' worth of supplies for his pack that they hadn't come close to using up.Kate had her eye on every last crate of those jewels, and she knew it.Catching herself, Kate pulled back the outburst and steadied her voice. She slipped back into the fragile, sickly act."Wendy... I had no idea you were like this.""So all the support you gave us — it was only ever because you wanted to be Luna of this pack.""If I'd known... we never would have accepted any of it."The pack members around her started picking it up."God, if we'd known, we would have sent it all back.""A woman this calculating — our poor Luna Kate."Kate listened to the voices around her, the corners of her mouth rising despite herself. She turned back to me, her expression all suffering."But Wendy... you can't force love.""It's not something you can buy.""Was

The shouting from the pack pressed in on all sides. The crowd surrounded me, hurling every ugly word they had.I was just about to leave when someone's hand shot out and grabbed my arm.A man's voice, loud enough to rattle the walls."You're not going anywhere.""If Luna Kate suffers any harm because of you, you will answer for it."His words dropped a sudden quiet over the group. Then they all moved at once.Someone wrenched my hair back. Someone else pinned my arms."How dare you go after Luna Kate.""You're coming to the pack hospital right now.""If anything happens to Luna Kate, you're not leaving."By the time we reached the hospital, Kate was already in bed, looking fragile against the white sheets.Cole was beside her, stroking her hair. From a distance, they looked exactly like two people the Moon Goddess had meant for each other. When Cole noticed me, every bit of softness left his face."Wendy!
