unpleasant surprise

I descended the stairs gracefully, lifting the trail of my dress and careful not to step on it. That would be fatal.

The hall was filled with people from different packs.

This year, Theo decided to make my birthday special so we booked an hotel to celebrate it.

The party was being held at the hotel and not the pack.

He also made sure to invite the Alpha from the midnight pack and even from other regions to join us in the celebration. It's said that Alpha Killian from midnight pack is unfeeling and ruthless. He kills without a second thought but only his enemies.

Actually, I never wanted anything grand but Theo insisted.

" You are my Luna and the Queen of my heart. You only deserve the best." He had said to me and I agreed, albeit reluctantly.

To me, I'd rather spend my birthday with my family which ofcourse is Theo alone.

But Theo shared a different opinion so here we are.

As I made my way down the stairs, my eyes remained glued to my husband who was waiting for me at the base of the stairs.

Looking at him smiling so pleasantly at me, my heart skipped a beat.

His smile always makes me have a reason to look forward for the next day. His love for me gives me a reason to live.

He is my life and my life and I have never been ashamed of letting him know that.

As I took my last step, Theo outstretched his hand and I took it.

Pulling me to the center of the hall, we performed the opening dance.

As I followed his lead, I could not control the sweetness in my heart.

" I can't wait to rip off this dress after the party and make love to you till day break." Theo whispered into my ears, a tingling sensation running throughout my body making me swallow.

My core throbbed with need just imagining the things that he'll do to me.

I didn't say anything. I didn't trust myself to say anything.

After the opening dance, the party officially started.

One minute to midnight, the lights were turned down and the countdown started.

When the clock struck midnight, I was supposed to cut the cake.

" One, two, three… nine, ten!" The last digit was said and immediately, the clock showed that it was midnight.

The lights were switched on and gasps filled the hall.

The scene that greeted me had me taking a step back and almost stumbled to the ground.

My husband, Theo, was entangled with a female as they kissed passionately

Then I heard it, the word that shattered my heart and had my world come crumbling down.

" Mate!" Theo growled possessively.

I tried to shake my head even closed my eyes hoping that everything was a dream but there it was, the reality I didn't want to accept.

Amidst the soft murmurs and the pitiful glances thrown my way, I caught a gloating face.

She had a smirk on her face, as if she was pleased by the show.

I didn't know how to react after seeing my husband kissing another woman infront of so many people and confirming that she was his destined mate.

The first reaction that came to mind was to escape so I turned around and practically run away.

I stumbled upon the way and fell but I stood up and continued running.

I could hear faint footsteps following me but I didn't dare turn to look back. One thing was for sure, whoever was after me wasn't Theo.

How could it be him? He was so immersed in making out with his mate that he forgot about his wife.

As if the skies were mocking me, lightning flashed, followed by thunderstorm and a heavy downpour graced the earth.

The tears I had tried to hold back fell, mixing with the raindrops and being washed away.

I walked aimlessly, I didn't know where I was going.

The city was calm, only the sound of thunder and occasional lightening accompanied me.

Exhausted from crying and walking for long with my high heels, I slumped on the ground, lost in misery.

I had cried myself into exhaustion and I felt numb.

I could not help but lament at my cruel fate.

Theo and I never discussed anything about finding our fated mates. Since he chose me, I never brought that matter up. Looking back at the scene at the hotel, I don't know how to face the future.

' What will happen to us?' my wolf, Lily, asked and I didn't know what to answer her.

I wish I had the answer to that question. I was as clueless as her.

Lost in despair, I did not know when someone shielded me from the harsh rain with an umbrella.

Struggling to look up, I didn't recognize the person but the smile on his face was beautiful.

If only I was in a good mood,I would have smiled back at him. Too bad,I think even lifting the corners of my mouth would be troublesome.

" The floor is cold. You will catch a cold." The man said in the most gentle voice I have ever heard.

His gentle reminder had my tears welling up again.

But what was the use? What difference would it make if I caught a cold? Compared to my situation right now, catching a cold was the least of my worries.

Seeing that I didn't intend to sit up, the man pulled me up.

" Just because things turn out differently than we expected doesn't mean we should give up on ourselves." His voice had a hint of helplessness and anger…? I couldn't tell clearly.

After helping me up, he led me to his car and I followers without asking a question.

I was surprised when he pulled out at the entrance of our pack house.

" I can only send you back. He was never yours to begin with. What's the use of crying over him?" With that, he drove away. I didn't know whether to thank or curse him. How could he be so heartless as to say such words to me? But his words had some truth in them. Theo was never mine. We aren't fated mates. Just because he proposed to me, I should have considered what would happen if he found her, his destined one.

I headed straight to the house looking like the mess I was but at this point, I didn't care. Sooner or later, everyone in the pack will learn about their Alpha finding his true mate. When that time comes, I don't know if I'll be ready to face the scorching and bitter reality.
