“ ugh…. Do I hate her.” One of the maids says, looking at the door. “ Who does she think she is? I think she needs a reality check to know she is just a human and nothing more.”
“ You know she sleeps with them willingly, having some guards wrapped around her fingers.” Another voiced out, siding with the first maid. “ I think it’s best we all get back to work, instead of discussing what Saoirse does and doesn’t do.” An elderly maid says, butting In on the conversation. “ You do know we have a deadline to meet.” Her words put an end to the conversation with the rest of the maids carrying on with their work. When we were done with our respective works, we were called back into the hall where Madam Perrine was going to give us the final decision about the routine change. We stayed in lines, waiting for her to come into the hall for the second time that day. Like in the morning, we didn’t have to wait long, before she walked with the same trio trailing behind her. “ Heads up.” She commands. “ The decision has been made concerning the routine change. Prior to my announcement earlier today, a selected few has been chosen to work in the King’s, while some of you get a new task given to you.” “ The list would be placed on the table over there.” She points to a small table at the side of the entrance of the hall. “ You are expected to check where you have been assigned to and be prepared the next morning. That’s all for today.” The head maid said, given us one distasteful look, then left the hall with her entourage following behind her as the female among them placed a paper on the table, walking out. We all moved in line to the table, checking out the list. I kept my focus on the table, my heart beating faster with each step I took. I sighed when it got to my turn, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath. I never knew I would be this scared to check my name on the list. Slowly I peeled my eyes open, looking down at the list. My finger traced down the name and I gulped when I got to mine. Micaela Whitlock. I traced my name, moving my finger to the right side. The King’s Palace. No, Please No. This can’t be real. I can’t be assigned to the King’s Palace, this was all a dream. A bad dream. I could feel my heart beating rapidly along with the panic that sat at the back of my throat. “ Can you move out of the way, So that the rest of us can check the list Instead of standing there being dramatic.” Saoirse, venomous voice, spat behind me. I didn’t get the time to move out of the way, since the queen bee thought it was funny to push me aside, catching me off guard. Loosing my footings, I fell flat down on the floor, my but hitting the floor hard. A loud groan escape my lips, I stayed sifted on the floor trying to ease the pain knowing for sure that it would bruise After managing to lift my body up a little, a loud shriek filled the room, and I was pushed back down with more force than before. My teeth clenched tightly together, holding back a groan. I felt a figure tower over me, causing me to lift my head up, coming face to Saoirse pissed off face. “ I don’t get it. Why would they pick you, when clearly I’m a better fit than you? Why why why.......” She screamed, straight on my face. “ Do you think I wanted to get picked.” I whispered, looking at her dead in the face. “ I prefer enduring whatever tortured given to me here then be in the other side of the Palace.” She scoffed, folding her hands to her chest. “ I guess you won’t be pleased, I mean, it’s best to say your last prayer. There is no way you are going to make it through the day.” She smirked cockily. “ Good luck, not.” Saoirse rolled her eyes, walking out of the hall with Roselani following behind her. The other maid passed by me, some gave me a cold smirk while others held pity. I got up from the floor, dragged my legs out of the hall, down the stairs, going back to my room. There was no way I would have any appetite to eat, not after the list. I walked to the bed, laying on it without getting out of my uniform. My body was cooped up like a foetus, my hands hugged my body and I laid there thinking about what my faith might be. Numbness filled me, my mind refused to work. I didn’t know if it was due to confusion, fear, denial, or it was the three put together. Saoirse was right, there was no way I could last a day. I was going to die. I guess my time was up, maybe it won’t be such a bad idea. Now, I can finally join my Family and Tatiana in paradise, if there was one. ♧♧♧ It was the next morning and everyone expected to be at the King’s Palace, stood at the entrance of the second Palace, waiting for the guards in charge of taking us over there. We set out to the other Palace which took about half an hour since we had to walk over there. On getting there, we all had to write our names down, including our age and gender. Then we were directed to the slaves quarter. A few minutes later, an elderly looking woman, clearly one of them, walked into the quarter, standing in front of us. “ Alright, listen up. I am madam Despina, the head maid for this Palace, “She spoke fiercely and filled with confidence. “ From this moment on, you all belong to the king. Forget about your old lives you lived an hour ago. Forget about whoever was your master. Know that you belong to the king and queen. Your only purpose here is to serve and please your master all the days of your miserable lives.” She smirks. “ You all are privileged to serve such great master like his majesty, King Orpheus Selinofoto.” There it was again. That word. Why do they keep telling us that? It was obvious how well they loved and respected their king, they didn’t have to force us humans to like them? Not after everything they had done and still doing to my kind. They were monsters. Nothing was going to change my thoughts about them. I kept my face passive, looking at the new head maid, Madam Despina as she spoke, this time it was about a rule we were meant to follow."Why don't we race back to the palace?" Joanna said. "We still have a lot to do." I gave a curt nod, and we both sprinted back into the forest and back to the training ground.I picked up my jacket as we both made our way back inside the palace, heading towards Joanna's room for the second half of the training."You won't be able to access all your powers because there are some procedures that you are required to go through as a Salem witch.""What are they?”"You don't have to worry about them now. Let's take it one at a time and start with controlling your powers so that you can take off the bracelet and won't have to worry about hurting anyone." I glanced down at my wrist with the bracelet wrapped around it before returning my attention to Joanna."We start with a simple spell, and I have just the book for you," she says, walking over to her bag.She searched through it before returning to where I stood with an old-looking book with a brown cover, handing it over to me. I took it f
"Hello Joanne," I said as I approached her on the practice field."Hi, Dear," she greeted me with a smile as I walked towards her. "How was your night?""Eventful," I answered, thinking back to the escapade Orpheus and I did all through the night, trying not to blush. "What about yours?""Peaceful," she answered with a smile.I no doubt liked Joanne and still think of her as a mother figure, but I still can't help but feel awkward around her, as I didn't know what to call her. Is it better to carry on calling her Joanne or Grandma? I wasn't sure but was certain that what I was feeling would pass eventually, and everything would be in place."Why don't we start then?. I know you had been training before the incident, which means you should be in good shape. Nevertheless, we are going to start with some physical training. You need to exercise your body first to master control. You need not just a strong will and mind but a strong body as well.” She explained, and I gave a nod, taking of
My eyes blinked as they grew accustomed to the situation. I felt someone firmly hold onto my hand, and when I turned to see who it was, I saw a child. I couldn't see the child's face, but for some reason, it felt familiar. I wanted nothing more than to protect whoever this child was.The toddler was leading with a string of laughs as we both made our way down the palace's hallway in the direction of Orpheus's study.I went after the child as it sprinted away from me in the corridor while still laughing, but for some reason I wasn’t able to catch up with him or her."Mama!" I attempted to move ahead as the child's voice boomed down the hallway, but the ground beneath my feet started to move backwards. No matter how hard I tried, no matter how fast I ran, he or she was still a long distance away."Mama?" The youngster was standing with its back to me, waving at me with its tiny fingers as it motioned for me to advance. He or she seemed content based on the tone of the voice.A smile spr
I was about to get out of bed and move away from Orpheus when he yanked me back by my wrist, forcing me to crash against his chiselled chest."Orpheus, stop.” I yelled, attempting to pry my hand from his grasp. "I have things I need to take care of.”He did let go of my wrist after he heard what I had to say. I raised my eyes to stare into his. I felt as though I would drown in his beautiful eyes for a second as he fixed me with a blank stare. He appeared to be contemplating his next move as he looked at me, trying to see if he could read my thoughts and what would be the best advice for him to follow. As his focus grew more intense on me, I turned my face to the side and cleared my throat, and my face clearly showed how uncomfortable I was feeling. He finally groaned and said in a casual tone, "Why won't you talk to me because you have things to take care of?. I feel a little jealous and lonely. It seems like you and Daniel are spending so much time together." When I turned to face h
During breakfast the next day, I was still in a daze. I couldn't believe that I had a family, an actual bloodline, which was Joanne. When I thought Joanne was hiding something from me, I never expected it to be that, yet it was, and to top it all off, I was a witch.I didn't even realise when the maids walked back to the dining room to tidy the table and was only brought out of my thoughts when I felt Orpheus's warmth on my hand.I gave a small smile as we got up from our seat and walked out of the hall. It had only been the two of us at the dining table since Joanne said she needed to settle some matters outside the palace before I began my training.Orpheus and I carried on down the hallway, and I gazed at our locked hands. My eyes shifted up to my wrists, staring at the bracelet, and it felt like something was stuck in my throat. Everything felt so overwhelming.Orpheus said that he would be working from his office, but I couldn't respond. Instead, I gave a nod as he pecked my
There was nothing special about the bracelet; it was just a pearl bracelet. I gazed back at her, puzzled at why she was giving it to me."The bracelet will keep you from getting out of control, like what happened two days ago,” she says."How did you…" I grumble with my eyes wide open.“I wanted to prepare you before telling you everything, but the attack happened, and I don’t know if now is the right time to let you in on the truth.” she said, worry dripping from her voice. “The last thing I want to do is overwhelm you, because your body is still weak, as the energy you displayed in the field took a toll on you.""No, Joanne, now I want to know everything about what is going on with me”. As I asked her these questions, my voice was filled with anxiety. “I keep blacking out every single time this happens. What if I end up blacking out one day and cause harm to the people I love, Joanne? I don't think I would be able to forgive myself. So tell me, Joanne. What is it you are hiding from
