The world is a pleasant, woozy blur, the expensive whiskey in my veins humming a warm, heavy tune. The VIP room is a cave of velvet and shadow, the only light a faint, crimson glow from behind the bar. I can’t see his face. Just a tall, broad silhouette, the scent of him cutting through the haze—pine and cold night air and something wild, something that makes the animal in my own blood stir and sit up, alert.

His hand finds my waist, a claiming, possessive touch that doesn’t ask. My breath hitches. I’m not supposed to be here. Not like this. But the moon is a silent scream in my bones, and the drink has melted my inhibitions into a puddle at my feet.

“You smell like trouble,” his voice rumbles, a vibration I feel in my chest more than hear. It’s rough, edged with the same hunger coiling low in my belly.

“Maybe I am,” I slur, the words thick on my tongue. My hands slide up the hard wall of his chest. “Maybe you are, too.”
