ASTRID

Two maids guide me through a maze of corridors, twisting and turning so frequently I can’t help but suspect they’re trying to confuse me.

Finally, we arrive at a large wooden door inlaid with silver. One of the maids knocks, waits a second, and then grasps the handle, carved to resemble a wolf’s head. When we enter the bedchamber, it’s empty.

“The prince will be with you shortly,” the maid says, keeping her head bowed.

“Wait,” I say as they file out, but they don’t even acknowledge that

ASTRIDIt’s never been lost on me, how large Cayden is, but as we make our way to the bathhouse, him leaning heavily on my shoulders, his size is painfully apparent. For one wavering moment, I think we’re going to tip over before we make it through the door. But we don’t, and when we finally get inside, I see a servant has already stoked a fire and hung a pitcher of water to heat. Small blessings.I start to undo the fastenings on his tunic, but he stays me with a hand.“You first,” he says, his eyes wandering over my body, hungry, which is how I know he must be absolutely shitfaced. He slumps back onto an upholstered bench, ready for a show. His gaze is so steady, while the rest of him is so unsteady. The effect is unnerving. Still, I push the straps of my nightgown from my shoulders, letting it slip down my body and to the floor. My underclothes, insubstantial pieces of material, quickly follow.I shiver, despite the warmth coming from the brazier. The stones are still cold beneath

ASTRIDSparring with Jace does little to bolster my confidence. These last three rounds are brutal, every muscle in my body screaming for me to just give up already.Jace isn’t even breathing hard, go figure. My deftest knifework barely nicks his tunic; meanwhile, he’s poked and prodded me with his wooden blade so many times, I’m afraid I’ll wake up tomorrow bruised like a banana. If this were a real fight, I’d have been skewered ten times over.My arms are quivering, my knife shaking in my hands.“H-hold on,” I gasp, gulping down air. “I can’t catch my breath.”Jace knits his brow in concern and steps over, holding out his hand to steady me.I grab it—and yank him toward me, my faux dagger held in my other hand, extended outward. But fast as a cat, he pivots, slipping behind me.“Very clever,” he says, “but you’ll have to be faster than that.”Before the sentence is out of his mouth, I’ve whirled around, tracking his movement.I see my in—his elbow is raised, exposing his ribs—but I’

ASTRIDIn the evening, Cayden summons me to serve him once more. I bathe him, prepare his bed, and then read him to sleep from Jules’s story collection. The next night, he requests the same. And then again, the following night. We settle into a routine, and I would be fine with it—compared to what other pets are subject to on the daily, this is beyond tame, I know—except he keeps me reading so late that I haven’t been able to slip out of his quarters and return to the courtyard. It’s probably for the best, I tell myself. Who knows what Jace truly had planned? But I can’t keep myself from thinking about the way his smile flashed in the darkness, the way he threw his head back and laughed with abandon. It’s so rare to see honest emotion displayed in this place. The upside of my new routine with Cayden is that, as the days pass, he becomes more and more used to my presence. He isn’t complimentary, exactly, but he also tends to refrain from outright cruelty, which I consider a win.One ni

ASTRIDCayden’s in such a rotten mood, I can’t even appreciate his body as I bathe him. He dangles a crystal goblet by its stem, wine splashing out onto the floor around us, and seems utterly uninterested in my presence.Unlike the last time I soaped him down, his body doesn’t respond to mine at all.His mean streak certainly has no issue flaring up, though.“This counts as clean to you?” he snipes, examining his arm. “I guess you did grow up in a gutter.”I bite back a retort.I’ve done enough snapping back tonight; I’m lucky Jace seemed to find the whole situation humorous, or I could have been kicked back out to the slums by now.Maybe Jules has a point about me studying up on my manners.Cayden stretches his arms above his head, then grips one wrist and leans to the side, arcing his ribcage out, showing off his well-defined obliques. He exhales, long and low.“I can feel this last hunt in my bones,” he groans. “I need a massage.”At first, I don’t even realize the order is directe

ASTRIDIt felt silly, at first, imagining Noah as my sparring opponent, but half an hour into my regiment, I swear I can almost see him.We used to spend hours this way, whole afternoons dedicated to footwork and knifework. Father had mixed feelings about this.On the one hand, he didn’t believe a battlefield was any place for a girl. On the other hand, he knew how important it was for said girl to be able to protect herself while walking around the slums at night.Mother simply turned a blind eye to it all.As my focus turns to danger, Noah begins to shift, and soon, it’s not my brother that I’m mentally sparring with but Bruno.I grip the stick-as-knife tighter, zeroing in on my technique, how I might slip up behind him, silent as the dark, and draw my blade across his throat. How I might whisper Luca’s name while I do so, letting Bruno’s hot blood spill onto the ground in ritual sacrifice. Not to bring my brother back—nothing can do that, I know—but to properly mourn how his soul w

CAYDEN“Well why not?” Valerius responds, grinning. “Princess Charlotte is the apple of King Werin’s eye, after all, and rumor has it that her only brother is in poor health. If she ends up being appointed queen, that would make you king consort of Werin—a very useful title to have.”“Useful for me?” Cayden says. “Or useful for you? I figured you’d stand in the way of this arrangement with Charlotte.”Valerius swats Cayden’s words out of the air. “You thought I’d be jealous? It’s been a long time since I’ve dreamt of a Werin princess of my own. I’m quite content with my life as it is. And for you, dear brother, I only want the best.”Cayden narrows his eyes. There was a time when he would have believed this sentiment. There was a time when he would have believed anything Valerius told him. He’d taken Cayden in after Annie’s death, after all, sheltering him from the worst of the retribution and properly schooling him on the ways of court. A bastard, he understood what it meant to have
