Ellie’s POV

John looked at me curiously as I approached the front desk of the police station. “How can I help you, Ellie?” He inquired.

“I need to inform you of a case of animal cruelty.” John lifted his pen, ready to take down some basic details. As he began asking me questions, the door opened behind me.

“I can’t believe you came,” Noddy spoke from behind me. “I want to file an assault charge against that bitch. She broke my nose,” he shouted over me. John looked up at his clipboard, giving me a questioning look.

“I will be with you in a minute, Noddy. Wait your turn,” John said before looking at me. “Now, what were you telling me about Ellie?”

“A German shepherd was brought to my clinic. He had been bound and left to die.” I told John. Noddy went quiet. John won’t ask any further questions. He is just taking the most basic of details from me. But I want Noddy to be scared because he should be. Noddy only came to town a few years ago.

I have seen Dastin a few times, which is how I

Sam’s POV I was still upset about Dastin when Ellie came bursting through the door. “Get home, get some stuff. We have to get you out of here.” She yelled at me. I didn’t understand her tone or her urgency. Not until she told me Jaxon was looking for me. Sheer terror stopped me dead in my tracks. I started to shake, fearing he would drag me back to the Shadow pack if he found me. Just as I was about to break down, Ellie grabbed my arms. “Get your stuff. We’re getting you out of here.” She said before pulling me toward her. “Ellie will take care of you,” she said, gently stroking my hair. “Ellie will make sure you’re okay.” I know her gift that calmed me. She always refers to herself as a third person when she does. But I needed it. Ellie told me she was getting me out of South View and that it was not a time to panic. That panicking wouldn’t help us right now. “I can’t leave Dastin like this, though. But as soon as I have finished laying him to rest, we need to leave.” She said as s

Sam’s POV Ellie left this morning, but not before leaving me with cash and a mobile phone. She promised to return on the 1st of every month, regardless of what day it was. I would see her then. Since it was only the 14th today, two weeks seemed like a long time to wait. “How had our lives come to this?” I spoke to Zola as I stared at the ceiling, “I was supposed to be the Luna of the pack, not dependent on others living in the human world.” I didn’t know because I had never done anything bad to anyone. Mischievous, maybe. But never bad. “It’s not about you, Sam,” Zola told me. “It’s about those who surround you. People with good hearts always end up losing,” she said knowingly. “You gave more than you received and always forgave, even when you knew better.” “Well, that bit me in the ass, didn’t it? But no more. From now on, I will help myself,” I said, thinking of Lily. Zola snickered. “You were born to be a Luna. It’s your kind heart that sets you apart from everyone else. Ell

Sam’s POV It’s amazing what you see when you stand and watch. With my bag of clothes in my hand, I leaned against a wall, watching and waiting. It didn’t take long to see the sort of man I was looking for. “Be careful,” Zola warned me as I followed him. Considering the size of the guy, I lost him twice, only finding him because of his scent. His odor stood out among the vast majority of people around him.Pete’s powerhouse was the name on the door. As I pushed open the door, I got hit by the smell of sweat. It made me scowl. Pete could open a window every once in a while. As I walked inside, the smell got worse. But I wasn’t here to critique anyone, I had a purpose. There was a boxing ring that occupied one corner of the room. Weights, punching bags, and other heavy equipment filled the remaining space. There were at least a dozen men there, including the one I followed. They all stopped what they were doing and looked at me, snickering.“Are you lost, love?” a man approaching me ask

Sam’s POV I was sitting on the stairs waiting for Ellie to arrive. Talking to Zola about anything, trying to distract myself. My legs shook nervously as she was late. I could smell her before I saw her. When I saw her face, it was like seeing a beautiful sunrise for the first time. I was ecstatic. I rushed down the stairs and threw myself at her. I wrapped my arms around her, crying. I hadn’t known Ellie that long. But it felt like she’s been in my life forever. “Are you happy to see me?” Ellie asked me as she held on to me.I tried to pull away so I could tell her exactly how much I missed her. But she didn’t loosen her grip. “Because I missed you.” She whispered into my ear and kissed my hair. This act of affection made me cry even more. I love her. Reaching my apartment, I excitedly showed Ellie the thrift store treasures I had bought. I told her about my encounter with the men in the alley and how that motivated me to join a gym, and now that’s how I start and end my day. “It’

Sam’s POV Without fail, Ellie comes to see me on the 1st of every month. I don’t know what Zola and I would do without her and her support.I have adapted well to human life. Tony has helped me build myself up physically at the gym, offering me training sessions. He has been quite protective since he saw my scars. He shoots down anyone that tries to belittle me. Much to his delight, I joined the boxing club and a local karate dojo. I surprisingly earned a blue belt quickly. My sensei believes I’m a natural. But he doesn’t know I have been doing a basic version of this all my life.I still help in the diner whenever they are short-staffed. Edgar avoids asking for my help because he thinks it’s unfair to me. Despite his reservation, the staff are not afraid to ask. Especially because I take payment in food. Which I give to Frank, who has been looking healthier lately. The only thing I’m struggling with in my new life is Zola. She won’t admit it, but Zola is struggling emotionally, so m

Ellie’s POV I initially thought Sam had lost her mind as she ran towards me naked, waving her arms around and yelling. That was until she got close enough for me to hear her words. “There’s an injured shifter in the woods. He’s in a bad way.” I think she thought I was going to follow her as she ran back to the woods. But although my gift may help calm him. It is a last resort. If there is a chance of saving the shifter’s life, I need the tools of my trade. I ran back to my truck and grabbed my black bag. It doesn’t have much in it, but what it has in it. It has saved quite a few animals over the years. Knowing there was an injured shifter in the woods, I ran as fast as I could to the tree line. Shoving my dress into my bag and quickly shifting. Kiki picked up the bag handle in her mouth and raced after Sam. “I just hope he is still in his animal form,” I told Kiki. For me, it will be easier to care for him. “We’re almost there,” Kiki told me as the wind carrying the scent of blo

Sam’s POV As the words came out of my mouth, Zola questioned whether I had lost my mind. I know I sounded crazy. But as I stared at the black wolf lying on my floor. I could not help but see his future, or the lack of it. He would be a dead man if he returned to his pack handicapped. He would either be challenged and killed or banished. No self-respecting Alpha would remain in a pack after being defeated. He would become a rogue and then what? Zola said nothing. Although she had her concerns, she knew I was right. “Have you considered the possibility that he’s a bad Alpha?” Zola asked. “Have you considered the possibility that he’s a good Alpha?” I countered. She sighed, but I was adamant I wanted to do this. “I guess we will find out when he wakes up.” “I will keep him safe until he can make a life for himself. I’m going to help him, just like you help me.” I told Ellie, who was still convinced this was a bad idea. I didn’t tell Ellie that he might be able to offer Zola the wolf

Sam’s POV “Do you remember anything about who you are?” I asked him hopefully. He tried to speak, but no words came out. Eventually, he admitted defeat and shook his head.“It’s like there is a block stopping me from remembering. I know they are there. I just can’t get to them.” He pulled his hair in frustration.“My sister told me she had amnesia when she was young. The doctors told her that her memories would come back in time.” I told him, repeating what Ellie had once told me.“How long did she have to wait until her memories returned?” he asked hopefully.“It must have been 20 years ago, and they still haven’t returned,” I told him truthfully. He shook his head again, then covered his face with his hands. “Despite not knowing who she was or if she had a family. She made a life for herself, a place to call home, and a job she loves. Not to mention an amazing sister.” I say, touching my chest. “What I am saying is, she may not have her memories. But that didn’t stop her from becom

Sam’s POV It was three days until Frank’s funeral and only five days until the full moon. Five days until I will be marked. I still have my apprehensions, but Zola didn’t. She felt Caspian was my true mate, but to find him, something dramatic had to happen. Whereas I think it’s the goddess trying to make amends.Reagan and I planned on travelling to South View after the funeral, so that I could share my news with Ellie. I didn’t know how she would take it, as I still hadn’t told her about Caspian. I was hoping she would come back with us as Ellie will want to meet Capsian. The main concern I have is that she’s not a social person. But then again, she hasn’t been around many wolves. What if they insult her? She’s likely to kill someone with that power of hers. But that is a worry for another day.But what would happen afterward? Will I want to share Caspian’s life with him at the palace? It’s nice and all, but I am constantly escorted around, and it doesn’t have the freedom a home sho

Reagan’s POV “I believe this is bigger than I first thought,” Richard told me. I grew concerned about my old friend. “Be careful and keep me updated,” I told him. If what he discovered was worth killing me over. He may paint a target on his own back, and with him being out there alone, no one would know for a while. “I will,” he said before he hung up the phone. I spun the chair around and stared out of the large window. The view from here has always been a favorite; that’s why I made it my office. “I should help him,” I told myself. But if the intention was to kill me, I could be giving them another opportunity. If the intention was to dethrone me as the Alpha King, then mission accomplished because the title has been handed over. But I didn’t know which one it was. The door bursting open behind me pulled me from my thoughts. Caspian rushed through it with a huge grin on his face, and he was dragging Sam behind him. She hadn’t come to our suite last night, so perhaps Caspian’s pl

Sam’s POV I rolled over and thumbed the hard lump under my head. But I hit something solid, something that moved. I instantly freaked and thrashed about, screaming, fearing the worst. “Sam, Sam. It’s OK,” a voice told me. I quickly recognized that it belonged to Caspian. As I calmed myself down, Caspian threw his arm over me and dragged me to him. The closeness to him helped me relax.“What am I doing in bed with you?” I asked him when I was ready. He moved a piece of hair off my face. “You fell asleep last night, and I didn’t want to wake you. So I carried you to bed.” He sniffed my hair and then kissed the top of my head. “I haven’t slept that well in a long time,” he told me gently.I want to be annoyed with Caspian. This wasn’t the deal. We move at my pace. But how could I be mad? I had the best dream. I was in my family home with my mom and dad. We were eating dinner at the table. It was an ordinary family event, and the meal was nothing special. But they were there, and we were

Reagan’s POV Sam and I have slept in the same suite since we arrived. Sam takes the bedroom, but she leaves the door open as she likes to know I’m around. This upsets Caspian, as she is still closer to me than him. But should that change, he is more than welcome to sleep on the couch.A positive outcome of Sam spending time with Caspian is that her nightmares are less intense. I know she still has them, but she doesn’t wake up screaming.Whereas in my dreams, my dark-haired mystery woman continues to taunt me. When she touches me, I feel alive even though I can’t move or speak. She runs her fingers through my hair and over my skin, sending sparks of electricity to my core. Although I have had many sexual encounters in my life, none of these women has ever made me feel the way she does.My dreams are so intense that I have to rush to the bathroom most mornings. So Sam doesn’t interrupt me while I deal with my erection. I like to think that the mystery woman is my mate, and I am dreami

Reagan’s POV It took Caspian and me several days to review and fix all those files he signed. Like hell was I doing it alone, as I wasn’t the Alpha King anymore. Caspian needed to learn how to fix his mistakes. The Wolf Council was not happy either, as their workload had just increased. But they should have done their damned jobs in the first place. “I hope you have learned from this,” I told Caspian.“Reagan. I’ve taken full responsibility for my screw-ups. But I don’t know how these files made it past these reports got past the Wolf Council without being investigated.” He told me this daily, and he raised a good point; whoever was responsible for the investigation knew they were passing incomplete files to Caspian. I just can’t figure out how they got him to sign them off. One, maybe two, could have slipped past him in the early days. But there were dozens, and it had been going on for weeks.“Could you live with yourself knowing an innocent person suffered or died because of your

Sam’s POV Caspian was beaming as he invited me to see the private palace gardens. “Won’t you get in trouble with the Alpha King? What if he finds out I’m there?” I told him I would offend him unintentionally. Zola also had her concerns. “If he tries to have me sent to the dungeons again, I am out of here!” Caspian looked like he was thinking, and then told me the Alpha King was with Reagan. “I only got the head of security job because Reagan went missing. I was the second choice for the position. I never thought I would get it. Now Reagan’s back, and classed as my advisor, the Alpha King prefers to talk to him rather than me,” he said, snickering.I followed Caspian as he walked along the empty hallways. Then he stopped in front of a glass door. I felt naughty as I walked through it. But once I took a few steps outside, I forgot all about the Apha King. It was beautiful. Everywhere you looked, there were beautifully pruned flowers in every imaginable color.Caspian walked beside me

Reagan’s POV Although I have never needed the services of Dr. Monroe, I have met him many times over the years. I have relied on him for his medical knowledge more than anything. He is also an asset to have around for those people who are wolfless or pregnant. At first, he felt awkward, and he kept calling me ‘your majesty’. I was no longer the Alpha King, and I had to keep correcting him. In the end, he settled for calling me ‘sir’ as he didn’t feel comfortable calling me by my first name. To distract himself, he talked about the pregnancy spike within the kingdom. It was good to hear, as new pups meant the next generation was being born. He measured multiple parts of my body with a tape measure. “Do you have a preference on what style of leg you would like, sir?” I hadn’t even thought about it.“What are my options? What is your opinion?” I asked him.“This is not the sort of thing we offer in the wolf kingdom, so when I was asked about it. I did a quick bit of research on what hum

Reagan’s POV It felt strange walking into the Alpha King’s office. It was once a place where I spent a lot of my time. But now I am no longer the Alpha King, and it belongs to Caspian. So much has changed since I have been gone. Yet this room remained the same; Caspian hadn’t changed a thing. But everything in this room is a memory for us both. Portraits of our elders, pictures of our parents, and photos of us from our youth. There is even a picture of the family we were so close to once upon a time. I cherished that picture; it was our mom’s last photo before her murder.A man was sitting at Caspian’s desk. But my business here was to meet the Wolf Council. Phillip opened the door for me, and I made my way inside. Every man got to his feet and bowed his head in respect.I am no longer their superior, but they treated me as if I were. I took a seat opposite my brother, who now sits at the head of the table. Everyone sat down, except for George. He was a senior member of the Wolf Coun

Sam’s POV I dreamed I was still in the dungeons. Tears filled my eyes about what those guards did to me down there, and when I woke to the smell of something I didn’t recognize. I sat up, terrified that my rescue was a dream. As I fought with the bedsheets, I remembered what happened later that day, about Caspian and the mate bond. It had to have been real.As I calmed myself, I heard running water. Hearing Reagan curse from the bathroom soothed me, as having him around offered me peace of mind that I was awake. Yesterday was extreme, and I’m still not fully sure that I understood everything that happened. While I waited for Reagan, I lay back on the bed and talked to Zola about Caspian. He seemed nice, but so did Axel in the beginning, and look how that ended. “So we proceed with caution and any red flags. We are out of here,” I told her. She was pleased I was willing to give him a chance. Then we both agreed that we don’t like the Alpha King or his methods.Being in his home and bei
