Chapter 3

Author: Peachy
Three days after moving out of the pack house, I rented an apartment downtown.

No Alpha pressure, no pack duties, no endless healing. For the first time, I actually felt some peace and quiet.

I was on my balcony, enjoying a coffee, when my phone rang.

"Sophia!" Marcus sounded frantic. "You have to come back!"

"What's up?" I asked, not really caring.

"The full moon ceremony! The full moon's in four days, and..." His voice was shaking. "The preparations are a disaster!"

I almost laughed.

"Not my problem, Marcus. You guys have a new Luna."

"But Vivian doesn't know what she's doing! The herbs for the sacred ritual, the blessing chants, how to even speak to the Moon Goddess... she's clueless!"

"And what does she have to say about it?"

Marcus paused. "She says she'll learn... but we only have four days! Sophia, if the full moon ceremony fails, the whole pack will lose the Moon Goddess's blessing!"

I took a sip of my coffee. "Yeah, that does sound pretty bad."

"So, will you come back and help?" Marcus pleaded. "Even if it's just to show Vivian the ropes..."

"Give me the phone."

A shrill voice snatched the phone. Vivian.

"Sophia, don't listen to Marcus's whining," she snapped. "I've been studying for three days. The full moon ceremony isn't that hard. It's just chanting some words and lighting a few candles, right?"

I nearly choked on my coffee.

"Vivian, are you sure you actually understand what the ritual is for?"

"Of course! I'm not an idiot," she said smugly. "And I've already got everything ready. You just wait, you'll see how perfectly I handle it!"

She hung up.

I just shook my head and went back to enjoying my quiet afternoon.

Three days later, my human friend Sarah was getting married.

I wore a light blue dress. By the time I got to the hotel, the ceremony was already starting.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please be seated," the officiant's voice echoed through the speakers. "We are gathered here today to witness the sacred union..."

I found a seat near the back, ready to listen, when I suddenly heard a familiar voice.

"Moon Goddess, please witness our mate bond..."

I whipped my head around and nearly jumped out of my seat.

In another ballroom at the same hotel, Ethan, dressed in a black tux, was holding hands with Vivian in a white wedding gown. They were having their mating ceremony right there in front of everyone.

They'd actually picked the same hotel!

"...grant us eternal love and prosperity for our pack..."

Ethan continued with his vows, totally oblivious to me.

I was about to sneak out, but then Vivian's shrill voice cut through the air:

"Sophia! What are you doing here?"

Everyone turned to stare at me.

Ethan's face paled. "Sophia? Why are you here?"

I stood up, trying to stay calm. "I'm here for a friend's wedding."

"A friend's wedding?" Vivian eyed me suspiciously. "You're not here to ruin our ceremony, are you?"

"Ruin it?" I scoffed. "Why would I want to do that?"

Ethan rushed over to me, his eyes flashing with... something complicated. "You... you're mating someone else?"

I blinked, then realized what he thought.

"No, Ethan. I'm just here for my friend Sarah's wedding. A human wedding." I gestured to the ballroom next door. "It has nothing to do with you guys."

"Then why this hotel?" Vivian shrieked. "There are tons of hotels in the city. You had to pick this one?"

"Because the bride picked it," I said calmly. "Besides, I figured you'd be at a traditional mating site, not some human hotel."

Ethan flushed. "We... we wanted something more modern..."

"Modern?" I looked around. "Then why isn't a pack Elder officiating? Why have the hotel event planner read a script? At least the Elders actually represent the Moon Goddess."

Vivian's face got even redder. "All those old rules are such a hassle!"

I shook my head. "You don't even have basic respect, and you expect the Moon Goddess to acknowledge your bond?"

"We don't need your approval for our bond!" Vivian fumed. "And I'm all set for the full moon ceremony. I'll show everyone I'm a perfectly good Luna then!"

Ethan puffed his chest out. "That's right. Vivian's a natural when it comes to rituals."

Just then, Ethan's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen, a smug look on his face. "That'll be the Elders' Council. They're probably calling to say how impressed they are with Vivian's ceremony prep."

He confidently hit the speakerphone button.

But the next thing we heard was Elder Grace's furious voice blasting from the speaker, loud enough for the whole ballroom to hear.

"Alpha Ethan! What in the blazes have you two done?!' Elder Grace's voice was shaking with rage. "The sacred ritual is a total mess! The Moon Goddess's blessing has completely GONE from our pack!"

"No."My answer was simple and firm.Vivian stared. "What?""I don't love him anymore," I said calmly, looking at her. "Not at all."The room was dead silent.Vivian suddenly broke down, tears streaming."You don't understand! It's not just about the Alpha position!" she cried. "The Elder Council said if the pack is destroyed, Ethan will be permanently banished! He'll lose all territory, become a rogue wolf!"Ethan’s face grew even paler."And..." Vivian sobbed, "I spent most of the pack treasury...""What?" Elder Grace shot up, horrified."All those jewels, those trips, those luxury items..." Vivian cried harder. "I thought being Luna would cover those expenses, but now...""How much did you spend?" Ethan’s voice trembled."Eight hundred thousand dollars," Vivian whispered.A wave of angry shouts erupted in the room."Eight hundred thousand?" Marcus roared. "That was our emergency fund for three years!""I'll pay it back!" Vivian shrieked. "Once things settle down, I'll pay it back!"

"Sophia, I know you're still angry, but..." Ethan started."Angry?" I scoffed. "Ethan, you think what I'm feeling right now is anger?"He looked taken aback. "Then what is it?""Indifference," I said calmly. "I'm completely indifferent to your pack.""That's impossible!" Ethan said, agitated. "This is your home, we're your family!""Family?" I scanned the room. "When I needed support, where was this family?"Everyone looked down."Sophia, we admit we were wrong," Elder Grace said. "But now isn't the time to settle personal grudges. The whole pack is facing extinction!""Personal grudges?" I walked towards her. "Elder Grace, you think betrayal and deception are just 'personal grudges'?""I didn't mean it like that...""You run this pack into the ground, and then you expect me to save it." I cut her off. "Do you think I'm obligated to do that?""What good does it do you if the pack falls apart?" Ethan asked angrily. "These people are innocent!"I looked at him and couldn't help but laugh

After Sarah's wedding, it was ten PM by the time I got back to my apartment.Eighteen missed calls on my phone, all from Ethan. And a string of texts:"Sophia, we need to talk.""The pack's situation is getting worse.""Blood Moon pack sent an ultimatum this afternoon. We have 48 hours to hand over the territory.""Silver Fang pack sent people too. They're demanding immediate surrender.""Sophia, I know you're still mad, but this isn't the time to be stubborn.""Answer me! That's an order!"That last message really set me off.An order?I blocked his number straight away. The next morning, I was drinking coffee when the doorbell rang.I looked through the peephole. Marcus and Elder Grace were outside.I opened the door. "What can I do for you?""Sophia, we need to talk," Elder Grace said, looking exhausted. "About the pack's future.""I've already said, pack business has nothing to do with me.""But things are really serious now," Marcus said urgently. "It's not just Blood Moon and Sil

Ethan's voice, laced with Alpha command, boomed behind me.I stopped and slowly turned around."You think your Alpha command still works on me?" I sneered. "We broke the mate bond, remember?"Ethan's face changed, and he reined in his aura. "That's not what I meant...""Then what did you mean?" I looked him straight in the eye. "Using your Alpha power to force your ex-mate to obey?""I just want you to think about the pack!" Ethan's voice rose. "You can't be this selfish! So many lives are on the line, and you only care about some human's wedding?""Selfish?" His words ticked me off. "Ethan, who are you to call me selfish?"Vivian walked over then, looking smug. "That's right. As the former Luna, you have to help the pack through this crisis. It's your duty!""Duty?" I looked at Vivian. "Excuse me, current Luna, that's your duty, not mine.""But I don't know how..." Vivian said, as if it were obvious."That's your problem," I cut her off. "If you don't know how, then learn. I looked at him coldly."Start over." Ethan took a deep breath. "Today's mate ceremony doesn't count. Me and Vivian, that was just to keep the pack members calm. You're the one who really matters."Vivian’s eyes widened. "Ethan, what are you saying?""Vivian," Ethan turned to her, his tone stern, "go apologize to Sophia. Apologize for screwing everything up.""Why should I apologize?" Vivian shot back, her voice shrill. "I tried my best!""Tried your best?" Ethan fumed. "Your 'best' almost destroyed the entire pack! Now apologize, or all those designer jewels and limited-edition handbags are going back!"Hearing "designer jewels," I couldn't help but sneer.I remembered three years ago, I’d wanted a simple white gold necklace, three thousand dollars. I wanted to buy it for our mate anniversary. What did Ethan say then?"Sophi

I froze."What?"Vivian realized she’d let something slip and looked at Ethan, flustered."You've messed up healing rituals before?" I pressed."Th-that was just an accident..." Vivian stammered.A memory flashed in my mind. Two years ago, a bad infection swept through the pack. I was away at a medical conference, and the pack needed urgent treatment.By the time I got back, three pack members were dead, and a dozen more were seriously ill.Ethan told me it was because "some trainee healer used the wrong potion formula."That trainee healer was kicked out immediately, and no one ever mentioned her name again. The Elder Council chewed me out, saying the tragedy was due to my "lack of oversight." My Luna rank was dropped a level, and it took me a whole six months to get it back."It was you." I looked at Vivian. "That trainee healer two years ago, that was you."Vivian’s face went pale. "I...""You mixed up the silver root and wolfs bane, turning the potion into poison." I walked towards
