BILLIE

“Where are you going?” Tristan asks me. We’re finished with the week’s last tutoring session, and he had been friendly enough, if flirtatious as usual, so I tell him.

“I’m stopping in Raven and Thorne’s art class to see the painting Raven made when I agreed to model.”

“I forgot about that,” grumbles Tristan.

“I’ve never had someone paint me before,” I confess, feeling vulnerable. “Art wasn’t on my high school’s curriculum.”

“That’s different than the prep school curriculum, yeah,” he admits.

“So…so this is a new experience for me.” And I’m nervous, I want to add.

“I get that,” he says, and we’re there, at the classroom for Studio Art 105.

“Billie,” Raven says as he hugs me. I see Tristan stiffen.

Thorne is there, too, and takes my other side protectively. “Hey, big guy,” I tell him, and he says, “Hey, small girl.”

There’s a canvas on an easel facing away from us. “Is that it?” I ask.

“I’ve named it ‘Liminal’,” Raven says, and turns the portrait around.

I shake my head as if to say “it’s nothing” (because it is) and immediately start stuffing my mouth with food.He cuts into his steak and red liquid pours out. I make an involuntary noise.“No rare meat for you, huh?” He wriggles his eyebrows and, embarrassingly, I laugh so abruptly I snort.“Don’t worry, I have a strong stomach,” I tell him.“Let’s test that theory,” he says, and takes the bottle of ketchup, flips it open, and pours it on his eggs.“Oh ew,” I say, and cringe at how prissy I sound.“That’s what I thought. A total princess.”I concentrate on eating my normal breakfast since he’s got me so flustered, all my comebacks are dirty.Princess in the streets, whore in the sheets.Yeah, right. He was my first kiss and I ended it by slapping him.Which I still think was justified, but…“I’m sorry for slapping you,” I blurt out. “That was uncalled for.”“No, no no, it was called for. I’m sorr

BILLIEI spend the rest of the evening going through my new clothes. I finally pick out a knit red ribbed dress with a pleated skirt and a sash tied in the back, the moonstone necklace and earrings, a red scarf, and a red cloche hat to pull down over my ears in the wind. The next morning, I braid my hair in two braids, then put them in buns low on my head below my ears, so it almost looks like I have a bob, then pull my red hat over it. The effect is very 1930s Hollywood. I wear my black leather peacoat over my dress, and put on my brown ankle boots. I grab a pair of sandals to wear on the beach and stuff them in a black bag with my sunglasses, lipstick, phone, wallet, keys, and sunscreen. I take a deep breath and look in the mirror. “We’re just friends. This is a friend thing. I don’t need to be getting a massive crush on an Irish-American gang leader alpha werewolf with boundary issues.” It hits me then—what if he’s Irish mafia? Then I really don’t need to be getting a crush. And

TRISTANI’m already fucking it all up.When I saw that painting, I couldn’t take it. Raven is good, incredibly talented. He caught the essence of her and trapped it on that canvas, and it was so beautiful my teeth ached.I couldn’t stand it. She should only be that beautiful to me.No, that’s not right. She’s right. I’m a jealous, possessive asshole. Billie should shine in the light. I don’t want to drag her down into the dark where no one can see.Not all the time, anyway.Thorne pats my back. “Good job there, buddy.”I’d bite his head off, but I know he’s right. I fucked up.“What do I do now?” I ask them. “Grovel? I don’t know if I know how to grovel.”“First, she’s right. That was a head fuck back there. You can’t tell her she’s nothing and expect her to jump in your arms when you come back for her,” Raven says. “You need to get your head on straight. Is she nothing, or is she everything? Pick a lane. Don’t treat the omega like that.”I growl under my breath. “I know, I know that!

BILLIEI snap my jaws shut while Thorne gives me an amused but sympathetic look. I shake my head at him and follow Tristan down the stairs.“What’s with the helmet?” I ask.“You’ll see.”Talkative, this one.We walk outside over to a spot near the end and stop at a motorcycle. Not one of the huge, Harley Davidson, ear-splitting hogs from my old neighborhood, or a moped in fluorescent sport colors, but a stylishly small red and black roadster with the name Triumph on one side. It looks retro, like something Indiana Jones or Captain America would be riding around on during World War II. He helps me adjust the helmet on my head.“I should’ve known you’d ride in on a motorbike,” I tell him.He puts his own helmet on. “Definitely. It’s a Triumph Speed 400. It goes a little fast. Are you ready?”“As I’ll ever be.”He gets on and I carefully climb on behind him. He smells like musk and leather and that earthy spice that seems to be all his own. He takes my hands and wraps my arms tight aroun

TRISTAN“Tristan, don't forget to take the pan of brownies I made for the boys back to campus with you.” My mother, Luna Moira O'Donnell, takes the last of the supper dishes into the kitchen. My father, Alpha Conner O'Donnell of the Triple Moon Wolf Pack, is rinsing them and loading the dishwasher. Once a week, we have a private dinner here at my parents’ home in Tidepool Cove, and all servants are dismissed, so I'm treated to the unusual sight of the elegant Luna and powerful Alpha washing dishes. It's my favorite part of the week.Well, until I met Billie. Now every day I spend near her is my favorite.Which reminds me, I need to tell my parents.“Mom? Dad? I met her.”My mother drops a plate, which my father grabs with his incredible reflexes before it shatters.“You met the girl in the prophecy? Your fated mate?” he asks me.“Her name is Billie. I'm almost certain she's a hybrid. She ran into a little trouble with Lunacy, and we're protecting her.”“Those animals,” my mother spits
