ENID

“What if she got a call from a family member?”

“She would have said something.”

“She would only take off like that to protect us.”

“She can take on anything.”

“Everyone has their limits, what if she’s overrun?”

“It must be Hyde, right? He lured her out somehow.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose with my fingers. If I squeeze hard enough, maybe they'll be quiet.

“SILENCE.”

“Thank you, Agnes,” I tell my sister. “If everyone can stay quiet, I can focus on this hair Agnes plucked off Billie when she was acting strange and figure out where she went.”

I wrap the hair around my forefinger, close my eyes, and concentrate on its owner. I can see Billie standing in front of the Lunacy Asylum. There are two cars in the parking lot, so we may not be facing more than we can handle.

“Agnes. Get on the phone and call Thorne. Tell him to have the Tidepool Cove boys meet us at the Lunacy Asylum. We're going after her.”

“All of us, right?” Rachel asks.

“All of us. Strength in numbers. And we need to

  • Alpha's Feral Kitten    EPILOGUE

TRISTAN The day our pack becomes official dawns bright and early, a Midsummer day. For Billie and I, this day will be as important as the day we become handfasted–still six months away. Today will solidify our family. Our extended, artistic, creative, obsessive, insane, over the top family. This is a ritual every pack goes through to become official, and which every Alpha dreads as the last moment he could be rejected by his Pack. This is it. The final vote on my leadership, the final show of confidence. This is when I find out if they really believe in me. We took a vote and decided on a name for our newly registered pack, the first in this generation of Crescent University packs to become official. The campus secret society we're connected to will still go by the Underground, but our pack, our family, will be called Black Rose Pack. Our Luna, Billie, is our black rose, beautiful and sinister to her enemies. She stands on the dais of the Rock House Reception Center, dressed in

BILLIE The trip Tristan and I take to the coast is like a dream. Just the two of us, following each other's rhythms, making love in inappropriate places, eating crepes and Irish stew and Mediterranean food made by the live-in housekeeper/caretaker/cook, spending hours in the Jacuzzi. We needed this time to recharge as a couple without anyone else around. Some days, we couldn't stop talking, as if the words would never get loose quick enough. We talked about our families, our childhood, our philosophy on life. Our favorite music, favorite books, favorite colors. All the things we hadn't said yet. And some days, we barely said a word, basking in each other's nearness, making love in the middle of the day and the night, listening to music while we held each other. We fell deeper in love every day. When we finally return to campus, refreshed, it's to find Dom and Fleming have everything at the Rock House under control. There haven't been any skirmishes with Lunacy. Dom had taken my

TRISTAN Campus police need Billie to give a statement, but I insist she be allowed to give it from the Rock House with access to soft blankets and hot cups of tea. She sits in the common room wrapped in a weighted blanket holding a cup of Earl Grey (made by Raven just the way she likes it with lavender syrup, sugar, and frothed oat milk) for dear life. She goes over the harrowing realization that Hyde is a psychopath beyond all reason, and I have to turn away before I startle everyone with my growls. Doctors from the Werewolf Health Institute show up to look her over to make sure grabbing that cattle prod didn't do any damage. “Another record broken, Billie,” her main doctor says, with a hint of pride in his voice. I'm proud of her, too, but all I want to do is wrap her in cotton and soothe her nerves. I want all of these people out of our home so I can take her to her nest and we can comfort her. Soon enough, they give us what we want, and the guys help me get her up to bed. We s

BILLIEThey have my mother. Someone connected with Lunacy–maybe all of Lunacy, or maybe just Hyde and his minions. We'd gotten word that Lunacy was splitting up into two groups, but we didn't know how many were in each group.I had no idea what I was going up against. The first thing I do is call the rehab. They tell me my mother was picked up for a shopping trip this afternoon. “Billie?”I jump out of my skin at Agnes's voice. She's standing at the crack of the door. “Hey. Agnes. Sorry, I have to leave early. I have to go.”“Is everything okay?”“Everything's fine. Abby can get Sophie and Rachel home. I have to go.”And not wanting to waste anymore time, I take off towards the front door with a jog.The path to the Asylum is twisty and long. Once I've finally made it there, I can see two cars parked in their lot. All the rest must have splintered off away from Hyde.I walk straight up to the front door and yank the screen off its hinges, then burst through the door barely out of bre

BILLIE “Where are you headed to tonight?” Dom asks me as he walks me home from the library. The early evening is bathed in half-dark twilight, the giant moon rising in the sky as the sun sets.“Just the House of the Children of Diana. I'd ask you to come but we're planning out patrols and we won't have time for any training.”Tristan has been gone for two days, and Dom is climbing the walls, making everyone anxious.Enid threatened to curse him if he didn't calm down at the Rock House gym yesterday during a demonstration of a throw. Then she offered him a natural anxiety medication. He said no, politely.I think we're all afraid of Enid's plants and the things she makes with them.“I'm just stopping by the Rock House to drop off my books and pick up Sophie, Rachel, and Abby. We'll go in a group. Don't worry about us.”“Okay, okay. I know when I'm not wanted.”“Dominic.” I wait for him to look at me. “You’re always wanted. We're just focused. And as much as we love your help, this is
