Olivia

The man did not look at the empty cloth behind him. He looked at me.

"Come inside, Miss Jackson. Both of you." He stepped aside and gestured down the hall with one gloved hand. "Hector's men hold both ends of the street. Mine hold this house. You may meet his on the lawn, or you may rest here until sunrise."

"And at sunrise?" Grayson said.

"I will ask for something. Until then, nobody in this house is touched. I have already given my word once this morning."

I got to my mother before Gra

OliviaI could not move my hand. The knocks came again. Three, slow, from inside the clay. Each one traveled up through my palm and into my arm and settled in my chest, where my wolf pressed hard against my ribs, wanting to answer."Olivia. Look at me.""I can't let go.""I know." Grayson's hands tightened over mine. "Brace."He tore my hand off the glaze. The seam gave a sharp crack and went dark. Grayson hissed through his teeth, and the room filled with the smell of scorched skin. He dropped to his knees on the carpet and held both hands away from his body. The vase sat on the quilt, green and ugly and silent. A line of sunlight had begun to creep across the carpet toward it.The knocking had stopped.I stared at my own palm. It was red but unmarked. His were another matter. The skin across both of them had gone white and split into blisters."Show me," I said."It is nothing.""Show me."He opened his hands. I took them carefully in mine. The blisters were already closing at the e

OliviaThe door opened without a knock. The man stood in the frame with both hands folded on top of his cane. He did not step inside. His eyes went to the vase on the quilt, then to the hand Grayson still held clamped on my wrist, then to the space between our bodies. I had not noticed how little of it there was."You look disappointed, Alpha," he said."I am deciding which wall to put you through.""I would enjoy watching you try. After sunrise." He glanced at the window. The sky behind the glass had gone from gray to pale gold. "Forty minutes."Grayson moved half a step, and that was enough to put his shoulder in front of mine. I felt the heat of his back through my sleeve. I leaned around him."You said you would ask for something," I said."I will.""Ask now.""Olivia," Grayson said, very low."He gave his word. If he wants something, I want to know what it costs before the sun comes up."The man's smile widened. "Quick. I was told you would be.""Told by who?" Grayson said. The a

Until then, nobody in this house is touched. I have already given my word once this morning."I got to my mother before Grayson could stop me. He did not try. Her hands were cold. The cut under her jaw was shallow and had stopped bleeding. She gripped my wrist hard enough to hurt."Your father is in the kitchen," she whispered. "They tied him to a chair. He's alive."I listened. There, behind the kitchen wall, a heartbeat that was slow and heavy and angry. I almost laughed. My father was always angry long before he was afraid. Two men in gray stood at the foot of the stairs. They kept their eyes straight ahead. In t

OliviaEve looked down at her feet. The boards were black and curling at the edges. A thin line of smoke rose between her toes. She did not step back. When she looked up, her smile had not moved."Careful, Grayson. Fire is fast. A knife is faster."He stopped with one boot half off the grass. I watched him put it down again. The cords in his neck stood out, and his breath came through his teeth in short pulls.Nobody spoke. The porch light hummed. The red line under my mother's jaw had started to run, thin and slow, into the collar of her robe.My mother's eyes found mine over the blade. She did not beg. She only looked at me, steady, and gave one small shake of her head. Do not.I stopped looking at Eve and listened to her. Her heartbeat was slow and even. Nothing in it changed when Grayson stepped, or when the boards smoked, or when my mother whimpered. A woman holding a blade to a throat should not have a pulse that calm. She was not afraid of him. She was waiting. My mother's hear

OliviaThe photograph lay face down on the bed between us.Grayson had not spoken for almost a minute. I counted the seconds by the pulse in my throat. Twenty-three hours. That was everything the blue handwriting had left us."We leave in ten minutes," he said at last. His voice was quiet, almost easy. "You stay three steps behind me. You speak to no one but Ben or me. If I say run, you run. If I say shift, you shift. Do you understand?"I looked at him. The gold was back in his eyes, and it stayed longer each time."No."He turned his head slowly. "Olivia.""Beside you. That is the only way I go.""This is not the moment.""It is the only moment. We did it your way. A locked door and a key turned from outside. Look at what is lying on that bed."The room grew warmer. His fingers curled at his sides."He is not sealed anymore," he said. It came out low, close to a growl. "I need you to hear that. There is no seal. There is me, holding him, every second I am awake. The moment someone p

OliviaThe knock came before I could look away from the glass. Two knocks, a pause, then one more. Grayson's knock. I turned off the bathroom light, and in the dark mirror my eyes were only eyes, brown and tired. I wiped my face with a towel I did not need and went to the door."It's me," he said.I turned the lock. He came in fast, shut the door behind him, and locked it with the same hand. Then he checked the window latch, the closet, and the space under the bed. Only after all of it did he look at me."How long have you done that?" I asked. "Checked every room.""Since I was nine."He said it flatly, and he did not explain. The gold was still in his eyes. I watched it leave from the center outward. It took almost a full minute, and when it was gone he looked tired in a way I had never seen on him."You felt her," he said."Yes.""I felt her too. I was standing in the hall giving orders, and something pushed back against my chest from up here.""I know what pushed."He dragged his p
