I was on my knees in front of the child before I knew I had moved.

The porch boards were cold and wet under my bare legs, and the damp came straight through my skin. The little girl did not step back. She stood with her fair curls tangled across her forehead and her blue feet pressed together, and her large gray eyes stayed fixed on my face. She shivered, a fine, fast shiver that ran from her shoulders down to her toes.

It was dawn, but only just. The sky over the trees was the color of dishwat

  • Alpha’s Forbidden Obsession   Chapter 110: Ben’s Thread

We laid Ben on the bed. His shirt was soaked through. His lips were the color of paper.Violet pulled the shirt aside and I made a noise I couldn't stop.A thread ran out of his chest. Thin as hair, pale gold, shining faintly under the lamp. It rose from his breastbone straight up, through the ceiling, through the roof, toward the sky. It did not sway. It pulsed."That's been there since the Hollow," Ben whispered. "I didn't know until this morning. I thought it was a bruise.""Dean put it in you?" I asked."When I carried Hudson out. It was the only way I could get him through." His eyes slid to Hudson's. "I am sorry. I am so sorry."Hudson didn't answer. He stood at the foot of the bed with his fists clenched at his sides."He needs water," Violet said, already moving to the bathroom. She came back with a glass and held it to Ben's lips, and he drank like a man who had walked for days. "He's burning up. Olivia, he's burning."I touched his forehead. It was hot enough to hurt my hand

  • Alpha’s Forbidden Obsession   Chapter 116 : The Room Above the Hardware store

They put me in a room above the hardware store across the road. One window, locked. One bed. One chair. A bathroom with a mirror I did not want to look into. The lock on the outside of the door was new and shiny, installed that morning, I would bet. I heard it slide shut behind me, then the scrape of a chair as a guard sat down in the hallway.I sat on the edge of the bed with my hands between my knees.Ask him why.I put that away. I did not have room for it. Whatever Grayson had begged for at twenty-two, whatever he signed, whatever he did at seventeen with someone's hand in his, I would deal with it after I got out of this room.If I got out.The window faced the mill. From the bed I could see the wheel and the gray tilted roof and the black line of the river. Down on the road, a truck had pulled up. Four men in gray were unloading red metal cans. They set them down in a neat row beside the mill wall, then went back for more.I stood up and went to the glass.Gasoline. They were st

  • Alpha’s Forbidden Obsession   Chapter 118 : Article Nine

Grayson's cuff glowed red, then orange. The metal ticked as it heated. His skin under it started to blister."Stop," I said, and put my hand on his arm.He didn't hear me. His eyes were gold all the way across and his breath came out in short bursts. The enforcers at the door raised their rifles in one smooth motion."Alpha Lancaster," Cameron said calmly. "Control yourself.""You will not touch her.""I haven't.""You said custody.""I did." Cameron stepped into the diner and the enforcers followed, boots loud on the tile. "Under Article Nine of the Council charter, a door and any heir she carries fall under Council protection. You know this. You wrote half the amendments.""I wrote them to protect doors from men like you.""And I am here to do exactly that." Cameron's eyes slid to me. They were tired and cold. "Miss Jackson. You are six weeks pregnant. A seer told me a week ago. I waited to confirm. Your condition is unprecedented and dangerous, and you are standing in a room with t

  • Alpha’s Forbidden Obsession   Chapter 117: Alaric’s Letter

I read it out loud so nobody could say I kept anything back. The cream paper smelled like cedar and old ink. The writing was small and slanted, the handwriting of a man who had practiced being calm for a very long time. Olivia, If you are reading this, Diane has told you what she did, and you are angry with her. Be angry. It is the correct response. But be angry later, because I have very little time to be useful and so do you. I lied to you in the Hollow. Not about the gate. About the cost. My voice caught. Grayson's hand found my back. Three things are true. First, the child you carry is a lock, not a key. Dean believes the reverse. He has read the old texts wrong for forty years, and I let him. If the baby is born inside the Hollow, it opens the gate as he thinks. But if the baby is born in the daylight, in the living world, in the presence of its father's fire and its mother's four hearts, it seals both gates together. Permanently. No keeper needed. "Both gates," Viol

"Give me that," Clarissa said. She had come into the corridor outside the bathroom on her cane, wincing with every step. She took the broken phone from Grayson's hand, read the cracked screen, and went gray."What does it mean?" I asked. "That is when I begin.""It means he's counting." She pressed her lips together. "We need to sit down. All of us. And you will not like what I'm about to tell you."We gathered in the back booth, away from the sleepers. Clarissa sat at one end, Grayson across from her. I sat next to him with my back to the wall. Hudson stood at the end of the table, hands braced on the vinyl, face tight. Violet and Ben took the stools at the counter where they could still hear."Dean is not trying to kill your child," Clarissa began."That's comforting," Hudson muttered."It is not. Sit down, Hudson."He sat."A door is a person who died and returned," she said. "You know that already. A door can open a gate or seal one. That is the power Dean wanted from Olivia. But

I did not read the letter. I got as far as the first line, which was my name written in neat, slanted handwriting. Then my stomach turned over, and I folded the paper back and told Violet I needed the bathroom. I made it into the stall before I threw up. When I came out, she was leaning on the sink, arms crossed, a small paper bag on the counter. "Where did you get that?" "The woman at the gas station down the road is sleeping on a stack of firewood. I took it from her shelf and left forty dollars on her counter." Violet pushed it toward me. "Two tests. In case you want to be sure." "Violet..." "You are going to take it. And whatever it says, I am going to be here." I stared at the bag. "I'm scared," I said. "Good. It means you're a person." I took the bag into the stall. The next three minutes were the longest of my life. I sat on a closed toilet lid in a roadside diner bathroom, staring at a stick on my knee, with my best friend breathing on the other side of th
