Chapter 49

Adam

The sounds of the pack settling in for the night float through the walls of our chambers, a lullaby easing the last vestiges of fear from my mind. My gaze stays locked on the entrance, waiting for the soft footsteps I'd know anywhere.

When Alyssa appears at last, my heart stutters in my chest. Her hair spills over bare shoulders in messy waves, eyes shining like liquid silver in the dim light. She stands frozen for a long moment, simply staring as if I might disappear should she look away. I open my arms in silent invitation and she rushes forward immediately, all but throwing herself against me.

I wrap her in my embrace, burying my face in the crook of her neck to breathe deep of her familiar scent. My wolf rumbles contentedly, soothed by the feel of her in my arms once more. "I've got you," I whisper, hands running over her back and sides, relearning every curve. She trembles at my touch, a whimper caught in her throat that tears another shred from my battered heart.
