Alpha Cormac Whelan never marked his pregnant wife. He thought that would make leaving her after she gave birth to his heir easy. After all, Peyton was just a shewolf who had given up her entire life to become his quiet, obedient wife. At least, that's what he believed until the day he saw her walk into the Alphas' Ball… Her spine was straight. Her eyes were cold. And another Alpha's scent clung to her body. The woman Cormac had dismissed as his helpless wife was again the emissary who once ended a war on her own. Now she has a new alliance to win, a marriage to escape, and a powerful Alpha watching her every move. She's back, but has no intention of coming home. Now, Alpha Cormac Whelan suddenly finds himself desperately trying to reclaim the woman he once claimed he had never seen before…

Chapter 1 I've Never Seen Her Before in My Life

(Peyton)

"Will your mate be joining us, Mrs. Whelan?"

The nurse is new here, she has no idea how much that question hurts me.

"No."

"Oh. With a high-risk pregnancy, we recommend a family member be present."

"It'll just be me."

She retreats to her desk.

The healing center sits in town, on neutral ground, so every pack for miles has its pups here. The bench outside the pup-health wing is solid oak, worn smooth by generations of pacing fathers.

It's hell on a woman eight months into a high-risk pregnancy.

The pup kicks my ribs hard enough to make me hiss.

The pup is strong, the healers keep telling me. Alpha-blooded.

They say it like a compliment. Nobody mentions that this pup is tearing my body apart from the inside.

I don't resent my child. I love them with everything I have. I just wish I was strong enough to carry them without crumbling.

My wolf doesn't react to the kick. She went quiet the week the healers first said ‘complications’.

Curled herself around the pup like a shield and left me to face the world alone.

A couple walks in, a warrior and his heavily pregnant mate. He guides her to a chair, fetches water she didn't ask for, then presses his nose to the mark on her neck until she laughs and swats him away.

I look away. Watching them feels like pressing on a bruise.

Nobody fusses over me.

Cormac's mother visits regularly, and she never asks how I'm feeling. Her only interest is in how the pup is measuring.

The Elders are even worse. To them, I'm not the Alpha's wife, just the container his heir is stored in. One of them called me "the brood female" at the harvest gathering. Right to my face. Cormac didn’t correct him.

They've all forgotten who I was. Some days I forget too.

I used to be Greyfell's chief emissary.

I ended the Rogue Concord war without a single death. With nothing but a warm smile and an offer the other side couldn't turn down.

Cormac Whelan used to trust exactly one negotiator with talks that could end in torn throats.

Me.

Then came the Frost Moon festival. One reckless night. A pregnancy neither of us planned.

Cormac doesn't believe that last part. In his head, I schemed the pregnancy to trade my emissary post for a Luna's crown. Never mind that he came to me that night.

Never mind that I gave up my pack, my position, my whole life for a wedding that took ten minutes.

And I never even got the crown he thinks I schemed for.

We had a ceremony. Not a proper claiming.

Eight months carrying his pup, and my neck is bare. He never marked me. His scent has never settled on my skin.

I told myself it would change over time. That once he saw me holding his child, something in him would soften.

I tried everything to win him over.

Cooking elaborate meals for a man who ate in his office. Keeping a house he barely slept in neat as a pin.

I swallowed every insult from his mother and his Elders, and I called it hope. Patience.

His scent suddenly hits me right in the solar plexus. Orange peel and cardamom, and the intensity of unbridled Alpha power threaded through it.

There he is at the healers' desk, broad shoulders in a storm-grey coat, and for one idiotic heartbeat my pulse lifts.

He actually came for my scan.

Then I see her.

She's tucked against his arm, small and glowing and willow-thin. Her eyes sweep the corridor until they find me, and for half a second there's glee in them. Then she rearranges her pretty face into a puzzled little frown.

The confusion is for the audience. The glee was for me.

Her scent drifts across the corridor. Honeysuckle and warm milk. Unmated, unmarked. Just like me, then. Except he's looking at her the way he's never once looked at me.

"Cormac." Her voice is pitched to carry. "That pregnant female keeps staring at you. Do you know her?"

Heads turn in my direction. Nurses. Waiting families. The warrior and his mate.

This is where the missing mark does its work for him. There's no claim on me for anyone to smell.

He doesn’t spend enough time with me for there to be a trace of him anywhere.

To every wolf in this hallway, I'm just a swollen stranger gawking at an Alpha and his beautiful companion.

Cormac's gaze lands on me. Hard and cold. The look he keeps for rogues at the border.

"I've never seen her before in my life."

Wolves can smell a lie. It puts a sour edge on the air. Even pups can catch it.

The air stays clean.

He’s managed to make every word he just said true. He erased me so completely his own body believes it. Even with his pup swelling my belly.

The nurse appears at his side with her tablet. "Alpha, forgive me. The lady's examination needs next of kin authorization."

He signs for her. One decisive stroke, the same one he puts on treaties.

Then he gathers her under his arm, careful and tender, and steers her through the doors of the maternal wing.

He doesn't look back once.

The corridor returns to its business. Only the warrior's mate is still watching me, and her pity is worse than the staring.

"Mrs. Whelan?" The nurse is back at my elbow, and now her voice has gone soft too.

"Everything's ready for your scan. Since you're on your own today, I'll need your signature for the authorization."

Since you're on your own.

Humiliation comes first, hot and stinging, crawling up my neck where his mark should be.

Then something cold pushes it aside. Whatever hope I had left is gone, and honestly? Good riddance.

Hope is what kept me cooking for that man.

Hope is what kept me quiet.

Cold thinks clearly.

He believes this last year broke me. He's forgotten who wrote half the treaties that keep his pack safe.

I know which allies would sell him for a wider border. I know which Elder falsifies the tariff counts. Before I was Blackpine's shame, I was Greyfell's blade.

I never needed claws to cut.

I stand. Slow and heavy, one hand under my belly, and for the first time in months my spine feels solid as steel.

My voice carries the way it used to across negotiation tables. "I’m more than capable of signing for myself."

The nurse blinks and hands me the tablet.

Peyton Knox. My own name, letters an inch tall. Not Whelan. I will never use his name again.

It isn't just a signature. It's a declaration of war.

I hand the tablet back, already planning my way out. Out of this marriage, this territory, this cage.

Then something shifts low inside me, and it isn't the baby.

Deep down, in the silence where my wolf has slept for months, one golden eye opens.

She's listening.

Good, I tell her. We have work to do.
