The Eastern Highlands were colder than Lucian Wolfe remembered.

Or perhaps it was the hollowness in his chest that made everything feel bleak.

He rode through the thick pines alone, his Beta trailing behind with questions he didn't want to answer. The sun had long since disappeared, swallowed by an overcast sky that mirrored the weight hanging on Lucian’s shoulders. He had left the Valen Territory in anger. He had failed Rayne. Failed himself.

And now, all he could do was face the wreckage of the choices he couldn’t undo.

The castle loomed ahead—stone, formidable, unwelcoming. His warriors stood at the gates with their usual salute, but even they seemed to sense something was wrong. Lucian didn’t acknowledge them. His mind was too far gone—still tangled in the image of Rayne pushing him away, the sharp fire in her voice, the disappointment in her eyes.

He had never felt so weak.

Inside the keep, Seraphine was waiting.

Dressed in ceremonial blue robes, her hair braided in royal fashion

The walls of the Ironfang stronghold were hewn from black stone, silent and cold. They towered around Rayne like the ribs of a buried beast, ancient and oppressive. She had been placed in a cell—not quite dungeon, not quite prison. More like a trophy room. One window, too small to crawl through, let in a fractured sliver of light. The door was thick iron, guarded at all hours. Her wrists ached from the shackles, though they were more symbolic than necessary. It was silver-lined metal, intended not to hold her, but to insult her. Humble her.But Rayne Valen refused to be humbled. She sat now on the edge of the low stone bench, blood still dried on her skin, clothes torn and crusted from the battle. Her hair hung around her shoulders in tangled waves, the defiant fire in her golden eyes dimmed, but not gone. The door groaned open.Rayne didn’t look up right away. She felt the shift in the air before she saw him. The heavy footfalls. The smug energy.Cain.Her once-Beta. Her betrayer. He

Rayne turned sharply, bloodied and panting, eyes wild.Xavier stood with Alpha Rurik and Kade, flanked by soldiers. Garran was cornered. Jace was on his knees again, trying to rise.“You fought well,” Xavier said, almost mockingly. “But you’re outnumbered. Outmatched.”“We don’t surrender,” she spat.Xavier tilted his head. “You should.”Kade stepped forward and tossed something from the ledge. It hit the ground with a dull thud.A banner.Tattered. Soaked in blood. The silver crest of Valen territory, clawed and mangled beyond recognition.Rayne’s chest seized.“What is that?” she demanded, already fearing the answer.“You were clever,” Alpha Rurik cut in, his voice smug. “But not clever enough. While you marched into Hollow’s Edge like a war queen, your lands were being surrounded. We have wolves at every border.”Xavier’s eyes glittered with triumph. “Your council is in chaos. Your defenses are splintered. And your people? They’re leaderless.”Rayne’s throat went dry.No. No, it co

Heads turned. Cain stepped from the shadows of the chamber’s edge, his arms casually crossed over his chest. His expression was unreadable, almost bored.Rayne stiffened. She hadn’t even known he was in the hall.Elder Dena frowned. “You support this, Beta Cain?”A slow smile curved Cain’s lips. “She’s our Alpha, isn’t she? If she wants to march into Hollow’s Edge, let her. It would be foolish to abandon our own, no matter the odds.”Rayne narrowed her eyes. That didn’t sound like him."Jace and Garran are not really one of us." They yelled back."But they joined our pack and fought for this territory like they belonged here." Cain persisted.“And what of the risk to the territory?” Elder Thorne asked.Cain shrugged. “We’re already fortifying our defenses. If the Ironfangs planned to strike again, they’d have done it while our Alpha was gone. They missed their chance. Let her retrieve her warriors. Show them—and us—that the Valen Alpha doesn’t abandon her own.”His words sent a murmur

The night sky was a canvas of restless stars and storm-stirred clouds when Rayne rode out of the Eastern Highlands. The heavy gates groaned closed behind her, but the ache in her chest roared louder than any iron hinge. The wind whipped through her cloak, her wolf pacing restlessly beneath her skin, sensing the turmoil inside her. Her fists clenched the reins as her horse galloped into the dark, hooves pounding the earth in rhythm with her pulsing thoughts. Rayne’s thoughts swirled like a tempest—Lucian’s confession, Seraphine’s intrusion, the way his voice cracked when he said her name. She should have felt closure. But the truth had only carved deeper wounds. Why didn’t he fight harder? Why didn’t I?Her chest constricted. There had been a moment—brief but blinding—where she’d thought they might begin again. That under the fire of past betrayals, something still survived. But Seraphine’s venom, Lucian’s hesitation, the entire encounter—it reminded her just how fragile hope could be

As Rayne walked in through the gate, she felt the presence of the Eastern Highlands wolves watching her, curious but distant. She wasn’t one of them. And they could feel it.She was led inside, through corridors filled with carved archways and echoes of authority. Every step closer to him brought a surge of emotions she fought hard to keep buried. Finally, the guard stopped outside a tall wooden door.“He’s inside.”Rayne nodded, waited for the guard to leave, then steadied herself before pushing the door open.Lucian stood at the far end of the room, near a window overlooking the valley. He was alone, dressed in a dark tunic, the weight of leadership draped across his shoulders. But the moment the door creaked, he turned. And froze. His eyes locked onto hers, and for a long, heavy moment, silence filled the space between them like a thundercloud.Rayne stepped inside, pulling back her hood slowly.Lucian’s eyes widened.“Rayne…”She gave him a faint smile, but it didn’t reach her eye

The air atop the war tower tasted of rain—crisp, sharp, and full of promises it didn’t intend to keep.Rayne hadn’t moved for over an hour.Below her, the Valen stronghold pulsed with restless energy. Warriors trained. Scouts darted in and out of the gates. Garran had doubled the guards per her command. Jace had updated the patrol routes. Everything was in motion for war, and still—her heart wasn’t in it. Not fully. Not yet.She felt… unbalanced. Like she was standing in two realities at once. One where she was the Alpha of the Valen wolves, leading them into a war that would define their survival. And another where she was just Rayne, the girl who once believed she could steal moments of happiness from the gods if she was careful enough. But she hadn’t been careful. And now the gods were asking for repayment in blood.Footsteps approached behind her—measured and slow. She didn’t need to look to know who it was.“Don’t try to talk me down,” she murmured, her voice hollow. “I’ve alread
