Rayne's arms ached. Her legs trembled with each step as she pushed through the forest path, Jace’s unconscious weight slung across her shoulders. She had no idea how long she’d been carrying him—minutes? Hours? It all blurred together in a haze of adrenaline and desperation.

His blood had stained the front of her shirt. Warm and sticky, seeping through the fabric like guilt itself.

“Hang on, Jace,” she murmured through gritted teeth. “We’re almost there. Just a little more.”

The edge of the trees gave way to the southern path behind the training hall, and up ahead—blessedly—the spires of the academy came into view. Students moved in clusters across the courtyard, heads turning toward her as the sight of a bloodied Alpha on another’s back shattered the peaceful morning lull.

Gasps erupted.

Someone shouted.

And then they came running.

Rayne didn’t have time to explain. Her boots hit the stone steps with a thud, knees buckling beneath Jace’s weight as she finally stumbled forward.

Later that night, as shadows blanketed the mountains, Cain slipped through the side halls of the fortress and descended into the abandoned war crypts beneath the keep.Only a few trusted wolves followed.Among them was Rurik, a former soldier stripped of rank by Rayne’s father long ago, and Elda, a healer exiled for poisoning a rival's mate years prior.“She’s winning them over,” Rurik whispered. “Most of the council members seem impressed.”“She has fire,” Cain admitted, lighting a torch. “But fire burns too fast when it’s not tempered by stone.”He led them into the inner chamber, where old relics and forbidden scrolls lay untouched. Dust curled around his boots like ghosts of the past.“She wants to make us warriors again,” Cain continued. “But a queen who leads without fear… is a queen waiting to be destroyed.”Elda stepped closer, eyes glittering. “You plan to take the seat?”“I plan to return it to the gender it belongs to,” Cain replied. “Rayne Valen is girl, a rogue wearing st

The title of Alpha was not a crown—it was a mantle of fire.Rayne Valen learned this the moment she stepped into her late father’s war hall. The stone walls still bore the marks of his reign—burn marks from old raids, deep gashes where claws had scraped in fury, banners faded by years of battle. But everything else had changed. The elders sat stiffly, their judgment hidden behind wrinkled expressions. The warriors didn’t bow when she passed—they watched. Measured. Waited for her to falter.Cain had not made it easy.Though she had bested him in the Trial of Alpha, his influence still festered in the hearts of many. He spoke with poisoned civility now, calling her “Alpha Rayne” in public while whispering insurrection in the shadows.“It’s tradition, Alpha,” an elder insisted one morning during the war council. “No female has ruled the Valen Territory before. Not since the Old Ages. Even your mother—bless her soul—stood beside your father, not in front of him.”“My mother didn’t wear ar

Later that night, Rayne Valen stood alone at her father’s old study, untouched since his death.Dust covered the crest on the wall. She ran her fingers across it, and whispered, “I’m home, Father. I knew you never wanted me to return, but I can't watch your legacy burn down to ashes. And now I have become what you thought I would never be. An Alpha of Valen pack.”Behind her, Garran stepped in.“They’re waiting for your speech,” he said gently.Rayne nodded. “They will wait a little longer.”He looked at her with pride. “They thought you were dead. That you’d forgotten this place.”“I never forgot,” she said. “I just had to become strong enough to return.”As she walked out to address the pack… ravens flew overhead.A message had been sent to all neighbouring territories on the change of leadership. In the Eastern Highlands… Alpha Lucian Wolfe would soon learn:Rayne Valen was Alpha now.And the world was shifting. The wind howled across the Valen courtyard, stirring ash and snow as w

Alpha Cain stood tall at the center of the great hall, flanked by warriors and advisors, his expression pinched with disbelief and fury.He looked so much like his father, yet nothing like an Alpha. When Rayne entered the hall, a hush fell. Her boots echoed on the stone floor. Her presence radiated command in a way that made the room tighten with unease.Cain stepped forward, arms crossed, lips curling into a sneer.“Well, well. The exile returns. Should I call the guards or the executioner first?”Rayne didn’t flinch. “You sent out a call for help. I answered.”“I sent a call to allies. Not traitors.”“You sent it to blood,” she said evenly. “And I’m still that—no matter how hard you tried to erase me.”Alpha Cain’s jaw twitched.“Is this a joke to you? Walking back here with rogues behind you? Dressed like a wild Alpha and expecting what? Applause?”Rayne smiled coldly. “No. Just a moment of honesty.”Cain’s fists clenched. “You forfeited your right to stand here the moment you chos

The rogue settlement had grown. What once started as a band of outlaws hiding in shadowed ruins had become something else entirely—a thriving sanctuary. Tents had been replaced with stone structures, fires now burned in proper hearths, and scouts guarded the perimeter with trained precision. And at the center of it all stood Rayne Valen.Rogue Alpha. Her name—though spoken in whispers outside the fortress—was slowly carving itself into legend. She led with a firm hand and a sharper will. Under her, rogues who had never known structure now trained in shifts. They planted. They hunted. They lived. They fought only when necessary—but when they did, they fought as one.But peace… was never permanent. And that morning, everything changed.Rayne had just returned from a border patrol when Garran approached, his face pale, holding a familiar crest she hadn’t seen in five years. The Valen crest.Rayne’s breath caught in her chest as she reached for it."What happened?""Alpha Valen, your fath

Five years. The world had changed in five long, grinding years.Lucian Wolfe, Alpha of the Eastern Highlands, sat upon the obsidian throne carved generations ago by his bloodline. He wore the mark of his status now not just on his skin, but in the heaviness behind his eyes. Once a student warrior of Blackmoon Academy, now he was ruler of one of the largest territories. And yet…He had never felt more powerless.Beside him stood his Luna—Seraphine. Regal. Unflinching. Beautiful in the way ice can be beautiful—silent, distant, deadly. Her silks were pristine. Her posture perfect. Her fingers slightly entwined in his. Not out of love. But out of obligation. They did what they were supposed to.Mated, whenever the opporunity presented itself. They led together. But that was all.But in all this years, she had still not given him an heir. Not from lack of trying. Not from disobedience. But something else—something no elder could explain. The seers called it a spiritual incompatibility. A
