"Preparations are in order," I told the elders, keeping my tone sharp. "The wedding will happen soon."

All I wanted to say was that the wedding would never happen if I had my way with it.

Elder Mora smiled faintly, a predators kind of smile. "Soon," he repeated, his tone as smooth as the marble under his hands. "And how soon is soon, Alpha Kael?"

I ground my teeth together. "Soon enough," I said. "Don't worry, it will come to pass. You have nothing to fear."

"We are not worried." Elder orin leaned forward, those gray eyes of his gleaming with something too close to satisfaction. "How could we be worried when a date had already been set for the event?"

What the fuck?

"What?"

"Two months from now, Alpha," the old man said. "You will wed the Lady Lyria before the end of the second month and under the full moon like your father did to your mother. The announcement will go out to all the packs by dawn."

There was only silence after that declaration.

KAELRiver was in some sort of coma. That was the only word Zach had used when I asked him, and it still didn't sound real when I had it repeated multiple times in my head.Coma.Zach's healing chambers had never felt colder. There was the usual flicker of candles and herbs that filled the space with some sort of energy that seemed duller now, as if the air here was also holding its breath.River lay on the narrow bed in the center of the room, his skin pale as someone who had never seen the sun. There was an IV line that ran into his arm, constantly sending nutrients and whatever medications Zach had into him."River had lost a lot of blood... too much for anyone who wasn't supernatural." Zach had said when I refused to leave his way. "Coupled with the alcohol in his system, it was a fucking miracle his heart had not given out. He's lucky."I didn't believe in luck.If I was lucky, he wouldn't have lost a lot of blood and be in this goddess damned coma.I couldn't leave the room that

KAELI woke up gasping. My lungs literally burned, my throat felt like someone had ran a sandpaper through it, and for that second, I couldn't remember where the fuck I was.The room tilted before my eyes, the light and shadow warping until my mind was steadied enough to take in the familiar sight of my chamber ceiling. "Alpha," a voice said near my left. It sounded way too calm.I turned immediately, though my muscles were aching, my body a hundred times heavier than it should be. It was Zach.He sat beside the bed, elbows resting on his knees, eyes on me. There was a smudge of blood at the edge of his collar.“You’re awake,” Zach said, as if the fact were mildly inconvenient.I pushed myself upright, fighting the tremor in my hands. "What..." my throat felt like sand. "What happened?"Zach’s gaze flicked over me. “You fainted.”“Fainted?”"That's what it is sounding like." Zach tilted his head slightly. "Lyria had called me, said you immediately fell down and fainted. When I came,

RIVER"Asshole Alpha."The bottle hit the table with a dull thud, the sound sharp in the silence of my kitchen. A few of the drops spilled over my fingers, before sliding down to the wood.I stared at them for a long time... long enough that they blurred into one shimmering trail. Then I laughed. It wasn't like how I normally laughed. This one was low, and cracked, the kind of laughter that scraped the back of the throat."Fuck," I muttered, tipping the bottle again, watching the liquor swirl into my glass. "Fuck this. Fuck him. And fuck... everything."The glass was half-full when I lifted it to his lips.No... half empty.I liked the sound of that better. Half-empty, like me.The first burn of the whiskey hit my tongue and spread down my throat, sharp. I winced, then took another sip. Then another. And another.Fuck, I'd stopped counting after the sixth... maybe the seventh glass. Somewhere between the fourth and the fifth, I'd stopped caring entirely.Every single time I closed my

KAELRed.That was all I could see.It colored the roads I walked, the hallways in the den, the walls, even the very air that clawed its way through my airway and to my lungs. My heart thundered in my ears, sharp and loud enough that it seemed to drown everything else.River had rejected me.It wasn't a normal rejection in the sense that he was supposed to say he rejected me, but the sense of rejection was there all the same. He had told me to go away in a way he hadn't done before. That was unheard of.Anger tasted metallic on my tongue. Like blood. It had this familiar, dangerous thing that simmered right below the surface, begging to be unleashed. How dare River? How fucking dare River tell me, an Alpha, to get out of his house?I was the one who been disrespected, yet River had dared look me straight in the eyes... those fucking damn purple eyes that still made me weak every damn time... and spat out those words like we didn't have a bond tying us together.Like he wasn't mine.Fi

RIVERThere was someone in his house.Again.I froze just as I reached for the light switch, my senses and whole body catching the familiar scent before the blub even flickered on. There was no reason for me to guess who it was because who else would enter my apartment without an invitation and stay in the dark like some sort of madman? If anyone guessed Kael, they were absolutely correct. He was also a madman. Not some sort."Fucking hell," I cussed under my breath. "I really need to do something and change these damn locks."His voice came from the living room, deeper than usual. "What is that supposed to mean, River?"I didn't turn to him immediately. I closed the door behind me, tossed my keys on the counter, and said, "It means whatever you think it means, Alpha."Kael was standing near the window, though no one would see him because of the position he kept himself, one hand tucked into his pocket. His other hand held a glass of something dark. That wasn't mine. I didn't have any
