“Do you know what this is?”

Where did he get that? I racked my brain, trying to recall whether I had hidden the vial or simply left it lying around, but my memory was foggy.

“I’ve never seen that in my life,” I said. I felt guilty all of a sudden. Scared.

“Jay?” The king turned to his friend, ignoring me.

“That’s a vial of peace aster concentrate,” Jasper said, finally looking up and staring at me. His eyes were burning gold with fury and it sent chills down my spine. “It’s extremely powerful. A drop is enough to knock a person out for an hour.”

“And what will it do if a person has a weak heart?” Henry asked again. “Or old?”

“It will kill them.”

I felt my heart drop to my stomach. Does that mean...? No... that can’t be. How would I know it was going to happen? I also did not know Dame Geneviève had a weak heart. Yes, she was old, but she was as strong as an ox! I just saw her chop a bunch of firewood the day before.
